Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

Gabby and Larkyn will both be 24. I think Gabby will still be around. Larkyn might be but it's hard to say where she will be. Kaetlyn may or may not be. She'll be 26. It's hard to say. Same with Alaine. Many of our juniors will have matured, too.

I guess what I am thinking about is how the team event has changed things. I think we will see athletes sticking around longer (Firus, Balde) with the hope of getting a spot in the team event. I also think that strategizing by SC about who gets a third spot will become more important. Sochi opened the door for a number 2 (Reynolds) to slip in for a team medal. I think 2018 closed that door somewhat. SC has seen what real strategy (thank you Megan and Scott) looks like and I think focusing on team gold will continue. With that in mind, looking ahead to the next Olympics becomes important. You don’t want one discipline to be all inexperienced newbies. Using that second or third spot to get someone experience becomes crucial. Of course, that has to be balanced with sending those athletes who have earned it. Again, I don’t know what will happen, I just think there is now a whole other layer of considerations when forming a team.

I think that Alaine Chartrand (if she continues skating) will be Canada's Mirai Nagasu. There is no doubt in my mind that she is a MUCH better skater than Larkyn Austman. In fact, Larkyn's double axel in Korea reminded me a lot of what Alaine did with hers at Canadians this year. It is very likely that with Chartrand's scores from 4CC that she would have qualified for the free program at the Olympics.
I really think that Alaine has the talent to be Canada's #2 lady in the next four years (assuming Daleman or Osmond retire). I am impressed by Aurora Cotop and think that she has LOTS of potential.

OK the more I hear Tanith, Scott, Tara and Jonny etc etc say that Kaetlyn got lowballed Im getting p*ssed.

Then Tanith showed side by side the jumps of Med and Kaetlyn.. Kaetlyn was higher and jumped further and with more flow out.

I watched the mid day/afternnon program on Oly Channel or something today.

The base value for Kaetlyn's combo was lower than Med because there was no 10% on hers.

The GOE favored Kaetlyn

But overall score for the combo went to Med.

I disagree. Her jumps are smaller and dont travel anywhere... Kaetlyn's does.

All those commentators say Kaetlyn should be in second for the SP.

I try to be careful about reading comments on posts but I was reading - I think one of the ISU posts stating the finishes for women - and there were people saying KO was overmarked - with the response being she ALWAYS is. I get that things are subjective but that just seems weird to me.

I wasn't surprised that Osmond was behind Medvedeva and Kostner on PCS (and it wasn't by *that* much) but I don't think she should have been behind Zagitova.

What a GREAT night!!! So happy for Kaetlyn...I could not ask for more right now! Very proud of her!

My heart goes out to Gabby - this just wasn't her competition...unfairness in the universe...she has skated so well the last two years and deserved a better fate. But her tremendous talent has gotten her this far and she has so much ahead of her, too!

Kaetlyn Osmond brought me to tears......she a perfect mix of artistry & athlete......the complete package. And reminded me of Oksana Baiul at the 1994 Olympics. She was the Black Swan!:oksana1:

So glad she's an Olympic Gold & Bronze Medalist, and hopefully a World Champion in the future.

BRAVA, KAETLYN OSMOND, BRAVA!:saint:

I wasnt sure what to think of Gabby going into The Olys... The SP is her vehicle... she made the mistake on that easy 3/3.

And her LPs (at least on the GP circuit, I didn't see Canadians) were all low scores.....

I didnt have her on my radar for a medal from I did see of her this season...but Osmond was on mine.

Yes, this is a good point. I'm probably mentally selecting her best moments over the last two years. But I really did expect her to skate much better than she did here and at least be in striking range of a medal.

Where are people saying she was overmarked? All I see is a sea of support for her. I thought she got her scores rightfully. Flawless sp and near flawless lp.

:cheer2: How wonderful and exciting to see Kaetlyn deliver at the Olympics! I am so happy to see her living up to her potential. Beautiful performances and a worthy bronze medalist!

And some things to mull over....for all their backloading, Zagitova and Medvedeva would only have been about 1.5 points ahead of Osmond in the FS had she not had the step out on the lutz. I figure this was about a 3 point error...she lost -1.4 on it and in the short she got +1.6 on that element.

What this tells me is that a consistent Kaetlyn, with the PCS bump that would come from that, would absolutely be competitive with them for gold. And deservedly so when you consider the qualities in her skating that they lack.

Anyway, a fantastic competition and she should be very proud :)

Didn't Gabby change her LP to an old one after the GP circuit because of how poor she was doing with it? I think Canadians was the first time she debuted her new (old) long program and she skated it amazingly at Canadians. Even at the team event she did it great. Unfortunately it didn't happen when she needed it most.

  • 121.06 Skate America FS, 8th (3rd in the SP)
  • 126.18 Cup of China FS, 7th (1st in the SP)
  • 137.14 Olympics TE FS
  • 103.56 Olympics FS, 19th (7th in the SP)
Her TE FS score would have put her in 7th overall.

Yes apparently she did well with it (RIB) again at Nats. She ditched Gladiator...

But why on Earth any hot young thing would skate to RIB is mind boggling. Im in my 40s and Id pass. lol

It seemed kinda recycled anyway: Lori N must have thought "Maybe I can get away with simply giving Gabby Evan Lysacek's program, minus the bow tie".
