Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

Don't be surprised if D/R, Patrick and V/M skate both, while the ladies are split. I'm led to believe W/P get subbed in for the FD if Canada is in a comfortable spot....which I can't imagine being the case given Canada would be at risk of dropping a decent amount vs OAR in ladies.

This may have been discussed elsewhere, but will the Russian athletes be allowed to compete as a Team in the team event?

I think if Osmond is clean she'll be 2nd, so that's only 1 point - pairs & men could be much worse.

So that would leave Virtue/Moir and Patrick Chan doing both SP/LP.

My guess is that it’s D/R for the SP and S/B for the LP

This is the part I don't get. But the official documents still list Russia as having qualified for the team event, so I guess this Russia isn't banned afterall.

It really doesn't make sense to me. Russia does not have a team. These "Olympians competing as russians' or whatever they're calling them to me means that they're being allowed to compete as individuals. They really aren't a "team" are they? Oh well...

They're competing in hockey.

Apparently so - they are listed among the teams in the ISU document and in a photo posted by Phil Hersh, the team "booth" for Team OAR is right beside that for Team USA in the arena.

As much as I love Keegan and it would great for him to get an Olympic medal, they would be crazy to not have Cham skate both programs. On a bad day he will still score much higher.

Yeah - even Patrick's one triple free skate from Skate Canada beat Keegan there. Granted, it wasn't Keegan's best skate either, but it shows the margin Patrick has. That was Patrick's worst skate in at least 8 years and he scored 151. Keegan's PB is 161. I think the odds of Patrick putting together even an average performance and outscoring Keegan's PB are way higher than Keegan beating his PB.

And what does this have to do with Canadian ladies? Absolutely nothing. Sorry.

I'm not counting on anything. Osmond has been battling the flu since nationals, so not sure how prepared or confident she is. Also, clean skate could even drop her behind Kostner if Caro does the 3/3. I continue to be mystified how Satoko isn't pulling 9s for her short which is the best in the field. IMHO she's getting punished in PCS for her small jumping...but her SS and PE are comparable with everyone else while the rest of the components I think are #1 among all competitors. Judges may wake up.

Net net it's going to be close when we get to the ladies, and our girls will be all too aware that they need to keep up with OAR. I'm not sure they'll be mentally ready. Different dynamic than any other event.

Men is SUCH a crapshoot in both team and individual. Something in my gut tells me results will surprise in this discipline more than any other. Can't say what exactly but just a feeling.

Since Julianne and Charlie travelled with Meghan and Eric, I think they are in the team event

I would take that as having a plan B ready to go, since some decisions might be made on the fly.
If we're sitting in good shape and depending on who qualifies for the LP, we might be safe to put them in if CHN and GER don't make it. S/B would be pretty level with the rest and are skating pretty consistently atm.

For what it's worth, Jackie thought she was "looking fantastic" in practice.

I worry about her stamina though, which is weak at the best of times. If she's been ill since nationals that certainly won't help. I thought she sounded a little congested in the interviews from her send off party.

According to Jackie, here's what Kaetlyn did today;

"Osmond: marked jumps in FS runthru, 2A, 3S2T2Lo, 3Lo, 3Lz(e?), 3Lz(e?), 3F3T, 3F3T, 2A3T"

I agree that Satoko is criminally underscored on pcs but, on the flip side, the technical panel are very kind to her. I still don't get how any of her triples are called fully rotated, considering the blatant prerotation.

In any case, tech panels tend to be very lenient at the Olympics which plays in her favour. If Osmond is a little off her best, I think Satoko can definitely beat her.

I don't think callers across the globe have heard of the concept of pre-rotations. Has it ever been called?
Like...ever?

Wayyyyyy OT but this one kills me the most these days. Which sucks, because I dig his skating so much. Full half-turn pre-rotation. If this never gets called, nothing will. * shrug *

I know that early on in the IJS era, judges were picky on those skaters who were more blatant on toe-axel technique, assigning them underrotations.
