Kinda old news (and there's probably already an old thread somewhere where Adam's :respec: stance was discussed) but it makes sense that this resurfaces in media now that the Olys are right around the corner.

But yeah, let's use this as an opportunity to bash another gay skater. Because of course you have to balance your support for a gay athlete you like by bashing a gay athlete you don't like.

Being gay myself, I hardly make it a practice to bash gay skaters. However, I call hypocrisy and/or disingenuousness as I see it, regardless of sexual orientation. Eric Radford and Adam Rippon are trailblazing role models; Johnny is an opportunist.

Ah, the good old "good gay" vs "bad gay" dichotomy. You just can't give props to a good gay without pointing out a Bad Gay, after all. Nope! Every possibility to point out Bad Gays must be taken advantage of! That's the job of the self-appointed Gay Police in our communities!

Because it's totally not the homophobia (societal or internalized) that's the problem, it's the "bad" gays who are "opportunists" who are the problem. If we just sh?t talk them at every opportunity, eventually the Bad And Opportunist Gays will disappear and there will only be Good And Deserving Gays and *POOF* homophobia in sports and in larger society will disappear and it'll be all rainbows and sunshine! :rollin:

Ah, the good old minorities are never able to ever criticize their own because then “the man” won’t respect any of us argument.

God forbid gays protected by free speech actually say out loud how they feel about celebrities with easy access to media. Better shut that down quick!

What’s funny is that the Weir supporters really can’t find a way to support him in this thread so they’re bashing the original poster. I’m sorry but Johnny comes across as very self-centered and only concerned with himself. He’s probably not like that but that’s the image he carefully project to the public

Nah, if you read "Welcome to My World," with his dismissive, exploitative and derogatory attitude towards "old lady sponsors" and fans "with stars in their eyes," you will find that he is self-centered to the core.

First off this thread belongs in the trash can since it's not really about skating news, and all the more so since you seem to have created it to trash a former skater.

But I'm wondering if you think Weir is an "opportunist" because he was too "chicken to come out as an active amateur," do you think the same about all of the other gay skaters who also didn't come out while they were competing? Because it's a pretty long list.

Am I thrilled with some of the other skaters who remained in the closet? No. In fact, there are some creepy religious hypocrites that remain in the closet that I find particularly egregious. However, Johnny's timing with his book, timing of his coming out, support for Russia/Putin, and lack of interest in LGBT rights, while concomitantly riding his gay fabulousness to an announcing job at NBC, smacks of particular opportunism.

Thanks Adam for being brave enough to take a public stand against this xenophobic, homophobic administration. Conversely, Johnny Weir was too chicken to come out as an active amateur, never supported gay marriage until he needed to get married, and generally supported Russia/Putin during the Sochi anti-LGBT campaign. I am proud to support Adam, a USA Olympian with integrity!

You are wrong. Johnny didn't support Putin. He loves Russia, Putin isn't Russia. Johnny loves the culture, ballet, music, literature, the people. He speaks Russian language.

Johnny isn't an opportunist. As I said he loves Russia and he is beloved in Russia. He has tons of fans there who know he is gay. He has many friends there, too. He is openly gay for years no one before in FS world!!!!! He was the pioneer! So you don't say only Eric and Adam can be the role model. He was in Russia many times and he knows the conditions he was never attacked by homophobic persons.

Whatever. Not visiting the White House while Trump is funking it up is an easy call to make, and plenty of people have already made it. :COP: In any case, AdaRipp has much more important shizz to be thinking about at the moment than saying 'No' to something Trumpster is too grumpy and senile to ask in the first place. I'm sure AdaRipp is focused on more important stuff, but it would be cool if the media could stop asking him beside the point questions, and cease spinning and over-hyping his interview responses.

Where's Ross Miner, Elladj Balde, and Jimmy Ma when we need them?! And what do Bill Maher, MILK, GG, and Brian B have to say about this, cuz I'm sure their quips would be at least ten times more interesting than the original news fluff and every response in this thread. :kickass:

And please re dissing Johnny Weir for whatever reason. That's the oldest of the oldest old tired guff already. I mean jeepers, similar to the whiny complaints about bringing up Olympic selections in every thread, why must we discuss Johnny's perceived shortcomings (snarky or otherwise), in every thread on FSU, especially every time the Olympics rolls around? :duh: :drama: :p ;)

Well, if Johnny wasn't attacked while taking his limo back and forth from the "Four Seasons," it must be safe. I call out the rising xenophobia and homophobia Trump's America; I would hope enlightened Russians would do the same in Russia.

Sorry, you don't know anything ;)....I'm proud of Johnny.

I completely understand Johnny. I too love Russia - the language, culture, music, ballet, art. It doesn't mean I love Putin. I think he is evil and he is dangerous to the USA and the world. I can see that it is possible to love a country and yet strongly disapprove of and disagree with her politicians.

It wasn’t necessary to boycott Russia and boycott Sochi to promote gay marriage and gay rights in Russia. Australia just legalized gay marriage so if a generally liberal country like Australia just legalized gay marriage this year it’s peobably not likely a conservative one will do so imminently!

Going to Russia isn’t like going to Saudi Arabia or anything!! The ballet with the gay kiss at the bolshoi went off without a problem!

The boycotting of trump done by illegitimate Olympians is whatever. Let’s see what real Olympians do!

Like I begged earlier, can MILK, Bill Maher, GG, and/or Brian Boitano give us some relief in here? :drama: I'll even take Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezic! Just not together  :wall:

Johnny was like Elton John, Kevin Spacey and a host of others who didn't come out but sorta winked at everybody about it. George Michael and Ricky Martin. The list is endless.

Not having walked a mile in Johnny's fabulous shoes, as a hetero woman, I'm loathe to criticize. I do think he's bitchy, though, and I'll stand by that.

It had nothing to do with gay marriage in Russia; that has never been on the agenda. It was about a law to punish those who promote "gay propaganda" to minors, the cynical way it was used by Putin to distract Russians from their economic problems, and the chilling effect it had on safety of LGBTs in Russia. While the literal reading of the law was relatively innocuous, the dog whistle to homophobic Russian nationalists was not.

I think coming in fifth at the Grand Prix Finals addresses the "legitmacy" issue. Although I would have displaced, Vincent over Ross, Adam had them both thoroughly beat in the body of work department. If we start to parse the Olympian selections, then maybe Brendan shouldn't go either (not that I really believe this), since his ISU best is more than 30 points behind Adam. Calling Olympians illegitimate is a slippery slope.

There was an article earlier in the year where Adam, Nathan and Ashley (iirc) said they wouldn’t go if invited. Wish I could find it.

Not sure what Johnny Weir has to do with their decision to go or not

This one? The athletes invited to the Olympic media summit in late September were asked the White House question (Adam is quoted in this article but Nathan was not): https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...hley-wagner-skip-white-house-visit/702646001/

I don't see the original Rippon/BBC video interview clip (about 1-minute long) linked in the article posted by @sjs5572: http://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us...says-he-would-not-feel-welcome-at-white-house

The issue is how to make Russia pro gay rights and that includes gay marriage. Now it’s just fact that if you don’t support gay marriage you have extreme and overwhelming hatred of gay people and even if Russia repealed the gay propaganda law not allowing gay marriage is all about discrimination against gays and even trying to encourage killing of gays. The issues must be addressed and only a total boycott of Sochi because Russia doesn’t allow gay marriage while probably ineffective would have been clear.

The legitimacy issue is not covered by the gpf because rippon was beatenn by Miner at nationals. Until USFS says nationals is meaningless officially I will stand by it!

On the second issue we can agree to disagree. On the first issue, you sound like a raving lunatic.

There is no Raving lunacy. Russia doesn’t have a law banning homosexuality like some countries do. It’s still semi legitimate for a country not to allow gay marriage and that’s the way countries try to enforce homophobia.

Why is a thread titled "Adam Rippon Won't Visit White House" all about Johnny and Russia?
Because @sjs5572 mentioned Johnny as a bad example and connected to Russia

Hm. Do not be forgetful! If I'm right the gay marriage was allowed in NY! some years ago and there is state in US where the gays have to fear more than in Russia. And you forget Russia is a federation there are many partially independent republics , colorful populations with some religions plus the very influential Orthodox Church. You try to explain them the gays' rights. Needs time.

Vermont and Massachusetts were the first states to allow gay marriage. There has been an increase in bias crimes since Trump took office, and legislative challenges in states such as North Carolina and Alabama. I am not excusing those, and you should not excuse the increase in bias crimes incited by Putin. Republics such as Chechnya have always been more conservative and dangerous for the LGBT population, and Putin's leadership hasn't helped matters across Russia
