From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

So, barring any kind of last minute replacements for the remaining competitions, are we not going to see anymore of Tsurskaya this season? Her SP may be one of my favorites EVER! I wish we had gotten to see more of her.

Not very likely but anything is possible. There are only 3 international competitions left - Europeans, Olympics and worlds. (I don’t count 4CC because she can’t compete there, and she is unlikely to go to junior worlds). If let’s say one of the top three Russian ladies won Olympics and then decided to enjoy her win and not to compete at worlds, and another from top three Russian ladies got injured, then there would suddenly be Konstantinova and Tsurskaya (plus the remaining lady who competed at Europeans and Olympics) going to worlds. Though I hope that’s not gonna happen, because neither Tsurskaya nor Konstantinova are very consistent yet and I wouldn’t want to see Russia losing their third spot at worlds!

But she could skate at home competitions. There still will be Russian cup final, for example.

Thanks! That's what I thought.

I think there may be some spring internationals or domestic "Russian Cup" events left. I would love to see her end the season on a high note.

I am sure that it is disappointing for Polina to not make the Olympic team but I feel she's had a really positive debut season as a senior, considering all her injuries. She has a lot to be proud of!
And, good for her is that she's past puberty, she's got solid technique and will stay competitive for the next 4 years. The Olympics are all about timing and when you are skating your best. You get lucky like Adelina or certainly Medvedeva and hit it at your peak, you might skate away with a medal. You hit it when you're adjusting to a new body like Radionova, and you don't. But, I think Polina will be OK.

Absolutely! She managed to make some waves despite the enormous amount of talent in her own backyard to wade through. I've mentioned this before, but her FS was great! Hopefully, Polina's skating will continue to grow and move ahead on an upward trajectory.

Sergei Voronov has not yet taken a decision about his future, he said in an interview with RiA Novosti:
https://rsport.ria.ru/figure_skating/20180106/1130878007.html

He said he keeps training as he is the first alternate for Europeans. He said that many people probably will laugh when he says that he still likes to compete, but he stopped paying attention to what others are sayinga long time ago. He said he might very well wait with his retirement.

Here's a gif of him landing quad salchow from that video

He talks about his injury (he fractured his ankle in 2014 and missed half of the year); his plans for Olys: to skate good and have a great time there; also says that athletes are one of the laziest human beings :D

Although this interview was apparently done (at least published) in November, it was nice. They could have used more recent competition photos, though.

Here is an interview with Mikhail on the ISU website in English, where he discusses his season, programs, quads and other things:

I don't understand why every single interviewer keeps asking these tedious questions about retiring. I don't see pair skaters getting bombarded with those questions constantly and many of them are older than he is. He still is healthy, loves to skate and compete, had his best season ever and has been on an upward trajectory, so it would be a waste to stop now. Of course TPTB may conspire to prevent him from going to the big competitions, but he earned his GP spots & should use them.

"Since I'm the first reserve for the European Championship, I keep myself in shape, I ride every day, do not lose my temper. I'm comfortable going in this mode, I like to work, "said the athlete, who is currently at the training camp in Novogorsk. Therefore, I will think about the end of my career when the time comes - and when it comes, it's up to me to decide. "

The gossip on Russian forum is that Atakhanova is having a try out with Volodin in Sokolov’s group. So it looks that Ustimkina/Volodin are done.
Am not sure if this info is correct,
but I’ve read somewhere that she had some serios injury , so had to retire.
But again maybe it’s just speculations

It seemed to me that she has been outgrowing him. Even though he is quite tall, she is very tall for a female pair skater, which made their elements harder. But I thought they were together even off ice, so I never thought they would stop skating together.
