Hurricane Irma

We were removed from the flight because the flight attendants worked over their allotted limit and there is no backup team available. So there are thousands of people here at Fort Lauderdale airport staying the night because all of the hotels have been evacuated.

We all have an 8AM to Charlotte.

So the flight attendants (and their union) would rather they stay in Ft. Lauderdale? Smh.

Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well with your flight to Charlotte and you get to your hometown safe!

THAT is good news. I'm glad they learned from Andrew.

You have to be prepared. Would you believe we actually have carriers for our toads if we have to relocate. In the winter, this carrier actually fits in a cooler so that they can be moved in the winter during snow and cold. Being tropical, they cannot survive temperatures colder than The low 40s F.

The pics and video out of ST. Maarten,, BVI, USVI and Barbuda are horrific. Portions of Barbuda are underwater and the Island is unhabitable. 95% of buildings are damaged or gone.

my Aunt lives on St Croix, USVI and she said they were "saved" because the eye wall did not directly go over the island. However, she stated it was worse than Hurricane Hugo. She stated she wished she had evacuated. Because the winds they received on ST Croix were around 120 mph. On St Thomas they were hit with harder winds. Folks mentioned cars flying through the air.

I've been following your journey. Just READING it makes me want to reach for the Valium! Are there restaurants and bars opened at the airport?

Praying for everyone in Florida.

The restaurants in my terminal area were all closing down as we got off the plane. I got a few little snack foods from one of the vendors. Haven't found the bar but I only sleep 2 hours last night so I'm perfectly fine with finding a nice spot to just pass out for a few hours.

And thank you. I'm surprising myself with how 'well.. whatever' my attitude has been since the first flight delay ;)

DH and I are supposed to fly to Grand Turk later this month with 3 other couples. Following the weather closely, no communications from GT for the past 5 hours.

F*** the vacation, just hoping the islands and the islanders are OK. :(

Tony, to make you feel better, my sister has been trying to evacuate by bus. My dad's on Cape Cod, so he paid for her bus ticket to the Cape. She should have made it from Florida to Boston by tomorrow afternoon. She's made it only as far as Savannah in almost 24 hours. Delays due to missing bus drivers (stuck on the road in traffic), a missed bus in Orlando (she was first in line, but was shoved out of line by a mass of people evacuating from Miami), the passengers were told in Jacksonville that if Greyhound closed, the passengers would be kicked out of the building, and the driver wouldn't be there for four hours, etc.

I tried looking for a plane ticket out of JAX (where she was earlier today) to anywhere in the eastern half of US for today, tomorrow or Saturday, but everything is sold out.

I told her that if she can get to Baltimore or points north, I'll come pick her up if needed.

Saner heads have prevailed at Florida State; university closed tomorrow through Monday and game cancelled. That will open a lot of hotel rooms for evacuating people. Of course if irma keeps shifting west, Tallahassee may have to evacuate itself.

The upper area of the airport closes down and doesn't reopen until 3:15AM I believe they said (also meaning everyone has to go back through security). I don't know how but I got immediate printed tickets for the 8AM flight while the majority of the other people on my flight are still standing in line to figure out their itineraries.

With that said, there's nowhere to sit or nap except the cold hard ground and I'm dressed very Miami, so I'm going to Wilton Manners to see some of my bartending friends who yes-- are working tonight and closing down tomorrow. Nothing else to do. :-P

My 95 year old grandmother lives in Miami. I am really worried about her as far as I know they have not evacuated.

This is so scary.

Florida State U didn't close. The governor of FL closed it. He closed all public schools, including the public universities. If he hadn't, that game might still be scheduled! ;)

Rick Scott did something RIGHT?!?!

The track keeps shifting west. If it shifts any more, it's going to go right over us. There are so many trees in town (and around my house)....this is going to be bad. I don't have a basement.

Well here I am still at said airport! :cheer2:
And following my advice, too. :D

If you can't sleep and are bored, this is a good place to be because posters from all over the world mean people post at all hours.

But they just said on the news there was a shooting at the Miami airport. No other details. Hope everyone is okay.

Just woke up in Israel to an email from my ex-husband. Friends of ours in their 70s are riding this out in Key Fecking West! WTF? They live in a frame house a quarter mile from the water.

More to worry about. Good luck Tony and all FSUers. I can't reach my Miami friend and I hope to hell she's out. She and her family are rich, to be blunt, all real estate developers, so I'm going to figure they found a way.

So this is pretty awful. They canceled our flight yesterday and they said we were automatically rebooked today so most people just assumed they were on this flight. I went to customer service when we got off the plane (I was in the very last row after being put on last minute) and most people didn't get on this plane because it got opened to everyone and filled up ASAP.
