2017 FINA Aquatics World Championships (Budapest, HUN)

Dressel was long on both the turn and the finish in the 100 fly; otherwise, I think he would have had the world record today. If he had swum his 50 fly semifinal race in the final, he'd be looking at 8 golds at this Worlds. It'll be interesting to see if he expands into any of the 200s before Tokyo - the U.S. could certainly use another strong leg on the 4x200 free relay. With the mixed relays, the potential is there for 6 or 7 golds in 2020.
Mixed relays are going to be in the Olympics in 2020?

I wish they had added in the 50m for all strokes for men and women instead of the mixed relays. It just means the USA will get a couple of extra gold's whereas the 50's give other countries and swimmers a chance of gold as they are such quick races!!

Our commentators said the mixed relays give chances of races..and medals( not gold) for the little nations..

Hard to say. If the 50s became Olympic events, I'd expect the see more of the same names in the 100s contending. As it was, we saw winners such as King, Sjostrom, Peaty, etc. I think Medeiros is about as close as we got to a 50m specialist champ.

Did i hear they are adding the 800m freestyle for Men in Tokyo too? If so they need to add the 1500m for the Ladies since those were the only races not competed at the Olympics.

The U.S. ended up with 38 swimming medals, the most ever for any team at the World Championships. That's pretty amazing considering this was the first major championship in over 15 years that did not include Phelps or Lochte, who often combined to win a third of the U.S. medals. It's been an incredible turnaround since the poor showing in Kazan in 2015.

I think in Tokyo the US might field it best team ever.

The U.S. did benefit this week from a very poor performance by Australia and a weaker-than-expected showing by Japan. I expect the Japanese will be very strong in Tokyo. I have no idea what is going on with Australia - aside from 2015 Worlds, they have totally underperformed in every major meet since 2012. They seem to do well in the domestic meets but just can't deliver on the big stage.

...and France has really fallen off in recent years too. Similarly, Netherlands without Kromowidjojo (though it appears the focus is moreso on open water in recent years).

Australia will be ok. They have a lot of young talented swimmers. They just need a better leader though.

1500m for women will be in Tokyo. It was announced this year.

Men's 800m Free and Women's 1500m Free will be contested in Tokyo as the Mixed Relays (Medley and Free)

Last session of finals saw Caeleb Dressel got his seventh gold medal of the meet and crowned him as the best male swimmer of the championships, Sarah Sjostrom who won the 50 free just shy of the World Record was named the best female swimmer; Dressel and Sjostrom won the 50 Free and 100 Butterfly to mention and could have won the same events but the swede was second in the 100 Free

Camille Lacourt of France took the Men's 50m Backstroke, lone gold for the french who had a poor showing, I agree that they and australians are in the mid of a change of guard between swimmers who aged and newcomers that might show their potential coming 2019 Worlds and Tokyo 2020

The chinese and russians showed very promising talent and made the US work for some titles, look at their relays and freestyle teenagers in the womens side in the case of China. In 2020 Sun Yang would probably be in the dawn of his career but guy knows how to win. Russia proved they have a lot of talent spread all over their team, for me they had a great meet after the Rio Ban and even a better championships that those in home soil in 2015.

Japan was also a bit of a letdown with pre-favourites Rikako Ikee and Kosuke Hagino giving a very modest showing. We will see their real level of competitive form in 2019 preparing for the home Olympics.

Germany with just one silver medal, who would have thought some years ago?

A good World Championships meet, with high level and swimmers emerging and confirming their status

I was glad Lilly King and Efimova said something to each other at the end of the 50 Breaststroke

Chase Kalisz taking the 400m Medley with a Championship Record and doing the 200/400, good for him who looked the strongest of them all in the medleys.

Katinka Hosszu did the 200/400 golden for a third World championships in a row and add the Olympic double in 2016, impressive record on this event, so dominant and indeed the best all time for the Medleys
