The Tatsuki Machida thread

My gosh, he is so princely. There is an otherworldly quality to him, like a fairy tale prince, someone from a superior planet, or a panther temporarily changed into a man. And his perfectionism is to die for. The only thing is, the music hurts my soul. After his magnificent Schubert program, I expect better than sugary pop from him. I wish he would redo the whole program to something more profound.

I wonder if he will ever try acting. I would think his beauty and presence would translate to the screen.

Explanation of the program on his website: http://tatsuki-machida.com/skating/20_donquixote_gala.html

Google translate:
The stage is Barcelona, Spain. The story of a young basil who loves Katri 's daughter' s daughter 's daughter begins. This is a scene of the novel novel "Don Quixote" that the Spanish writer Cervantes (Moruel de Cervantes Saavedra, 1547-1616) published at the beginning of the 17th century (the second novel of the same novel, chapters 19 through 22). It is a famous scene set by the music of Leon · Minkus (Léon Fedorovich Minkus, 1826-1917) and ballet work by choreography of Marius · Petipa (Marius Petipa, 1818-1910) (premiered in 1869, Bolshoi Theater) .
This time Atelier t.e.r.m got inspiration from this classic ballet "Don Quixote" and tried to finish the vibrant world as a gala performance on ice.

This figure work is composed of all three acts focusing on that person who freely and vigorously lives freely and openly in Barcelona, as the sub title titled "Basil's Glory" (Basil's Glory). Therefore, the music also consists of the ballet "Don Quixote" from among the iconic songs that are the main point of the basil.
The first act is named "Technique Basil". Based on the basic structure of Basil's variations in the classical ballet (Ptita choreography third act), it was adapted as a variant of figure skating version of basil.
The second act is "Dreamy basil". I drew the inner face of a young man who pursues his dreams with a dynamic edge work of figure skating.
The third act is "festival basil". Basil with the ear of the harvested barley put in the best pocket, energetically dancing the festival space as you go, with fellowship filled with pleasure of fertility and love 's fulfillment, run through in front of you.
As a figure skating work, composition of the three acts that will start with the tuning sound of the orchestra is a new attempt. By doing so, we aim to condense and present the multi-faceted person of Basil as a three essence, as if it were on the ice as if it were set on the stage.

If you think about it, the "basil" which dances cheerily on the stage is a presence that has been performed by many dancers so far. For example, even if just listing the images that are currently seen, the American Ballet Theater (role of Basil: Mikhail · Balisinikov, video recording: June 1983, Warner Music · Japan), Tokyo Ballet Company (Carrier: Naoki Takashi, video recording Don Quixote, which was performed in October 2002, Shinkansenkan), K Ballet Company (Executive Officer: Tetsuya Kumagawa, video recording: November 2004, TBS) was a major stage stage indispensable for talking about "Basil" You can say that.
On the other hand, Minx 's music "Don Quixote" has been expressed by numerous skaters, even on ice beyond the theater world. Among them, John Curry (John Curry,
'75 - '76 season), Viktor Petrenko ('87 - '88 season), Mark Mitchell (Mark Mitchell, '92 - '93 season), Aleksei Urmanov ('92 -' 93 Scott Hamilton (Scott Hamilton, '99 - '00 Stars on Ice, Choreography: Sara Kawahara), Takeshi Honda ('00 - '01 / '01 -' 02 season, choreography: Raleigh · Nicole) . They are not necessarily playing the story of a youth "basil", but by excellent choreography and performance, attracting the viewers still, we will make our hearts embarrassed.

In this figure work we are pleasing tribute to these past masterpieces and performers. The so-called record is overwritten, but the creative rich choreography and the echoing performance will eventually become "molds", danced by many performers, and it will be woven into the memory of people. This work which exists on the extension line of "works" around "Basil" and the performance is also woven by exactly "quotation" of type and "idea of idea" idea.

By the way, in the pocket of the basil of the basics which appeared in the third act of this work, we are giving embroidery of golden fruitful rich wheat. In this ear of wheat, we put our own feelings of "living pleasure". A young basil who is never affluent, but still enjoying the present time and dancing freely and openly, is exactly the spirit of "capture this day" ("Carpe diem" Horatius' s spirit).

Wow, One can not help loving a performance when it is evident all the interest and thought that someone put in it.

Masterful from Machida! I believe John Curry would love this! It's great seeing that Machida has lost none of his fitness, performance intensity and panache. :)

I have so much admiration and respect for Tatsuki Machida!

Yes. It is on the level of John Curry and Robin Cousins. Rare indeed.

In theory, IJS was designed to reward skating like this. But you can see how his creativity is freed outside the shackles of competition.

It does make me curious to see him choreograph for others, although I'm not sure he's interested in adapting his vision to suit anyone else. An uncompromising attitude is what makes him capable of producing such a masterpiece.

Excerpt:
I think that is the mindset of “do not bend your beliefs”. The life of an athlete is not only made up of good things, but also injuries, abilities becoming sluggish, setbacks… many things can happen. Looking back, 99% of my competitive life was painful.
An athlete has a strong patience and belief that they must make efforts and keep trying hard all the while experiencing suffering. And such core strength is also essential for academic research. Researchers are not so easily recognized in the world and they will soon become frustrated if they can not keep their strong beliefs. I learned from my career as an athlete that the spirit of believing in the light at the end of the tunnel is the 1% which is surrounded by 99% hardships.

Why did he retire before the 2015 worlds? I never understood that. He would have been a huge contender for the gold medal there. Given how Fernandez, Hanyu, and Ten all skated I honestly think he would have won there.

Is there any shot Machida might make a comeback? I dont think he has done anything that would have lost his eligibility although I could be wrong. That is the one good thing about the pro circuit being basically dead, it is almost impossible to become officialy professional.

John Curry's movie "The Ice King" is coming to Japan next summer. It's announced Machida works for the movie as a supervisor of substitutes.

Here is his comment about Curry. http://www.uplink.co.jp/iceking/
(my rough translation: bolded not mine)
John curry is a skater who kept himself to himself pursuing figure skating for his entire life in such a time as he could be ridiculed as "A gorgeous dance from a man? Shame on you."

In this movie, with valuable videos and testimonies from people close to him, the life of Curry who survived as an artist, while resisting various difficulties, as well as a group of his gem works are revived vividly.

Yet, on the other hand, when I see the conflicts he alone had in himself in the back of the gorgeous stages, I am stunned that the problems which surrounds this sport has not been solved. We should never forget that lots of skaters are still on the ice with the same artistic conflicts as Curry had.

@rosewood,do you by any chance mean supervisor of subtitles? I don't know what a supervisor of substitutes would be. His comments make me intrigued to see the film. I didn't even notice when it came out. I guess I had Olympics brain.

I don't know either. I wonder if it's like he gives advice to the translator of the movie since maybe the movie translator doesn't know well about figure skating or something?

ETA:
Of course, I posted the info since his comment/the movie itself were so intrigue. :)
