From Russia with love [#23]: Spring/Summer 2016

I finally watched the recording of the pairs competition (skipped some). I thought the commentators were overly critical of Stolbova-Klimova's LP. Although it was nowhere close to their GPF performance, it still was a strong performance. One major mistake (Ksenia's fall on the sbs 3 sal) and one minor mistake (on the 3-3-2 making it 3-3-1). It was choreographically superb, and combined with their great skating skills and strong throws, they were clearly undermarked. Considering the amount of time they lost due to Fedor's injury, I thought it was a very respectable world championship for them. They finished the highest among the Russian pairs. I would like them to keep this LP for next year. They really didn't get a chance to skate it to its potential because of the injury (although the GPF performance was very strong). It is a world championship caliber LP.

Tracy and Ryan raved over T&M as the next Russian pair to watch (for the next 6 years, according to Ryan), which pleased me. However, right now S&K are still a better team for the next two years. T&M have such an ease, such lightness in their skating, and athleticism too. They were the only Russian pair that looked happy after their skates. They need to win at least a world bronze next year to be in medal contention in 2018 Oly. JMO.

I thought S&M's marks were shockingly high for what they did. They don't have the complexity of more experienced pairs, and are merely being held up because of Aliona's name and reputation. Aliona's two foot landing on the throw was so bad that they should not have received any points for that throw (is that too harsh? Or would it be only a -3 GOE?). She actually stood on both feet; it wasn't just a slight touch of the other foot. A fall should score higher. She also had a mistake on the first sbs triple jump.

V&T were off from the start- visible in the arena-, with Maxim's mistake on the sbs salchows, but I thought they would put it behind them and skate great rest of the way. Tatiana had a turnout on the landing of her second throw; it wan't a two foot like Aliona's. Tracy said the wind went out of their sails due to the mistakes. I still felt that they would win the bronze, or they would be just behind Stol-Klim, and at least two of the Russian pairs would be ahead of S&M. V&T clearly had difficulty returning after 18 months absence, and Maxim's shoulder injury. I loved both their programs. The Dracula music really brought out the power in their skating at the Europeans. May be they should keep it for one more season if they are serious about returning to competition. They could win worlds next year if they skate it clean. Not sure if they will need a quad twist to win.

Finally, I admit that I didn't watch D&R's skate. It was bad enough for me to watch it live in the arena. Sadly, they are now the front runners for the OGM in 2018. It's a sad state of affairs in pairs skating. Hopefully someone will beat them at worlds next year.

The half on/ half off tights, the granny dress, the terrible hair, the gloves = ahhhhh :scream:

I guess you just dislike Zhenya. There is no other explanation for your comment which criticizes Everything about her, and does not acknowledge that she skated a fantastic LP. She was actually skating to music about Wallis and Edward, and had appropriate costume and hair for it. She is too young to wear something sexy. She was smart to not wear something too young either, because it wouldn't have fit the music. Nothing wrong with her gloves; they were not a distraction like Elena's. About the tights, I feel a skater should wear what feels comfortable to her. It's really much ado about nothing.

Fashion police: Medvedeva is wearing the same outfit she wore at the WC banquet

Aside from that, the girls are so much more normal than the presenter who was saying stuff like "Russia is taking back everything that's rightfully theirs" and "Americans don't really know how to make medals"

Thankfully, both Anna and Zhenya said this was their favourite medal.

Okay, I'll bite and I asked my fashion maven 15 year-old niece about this. My first reaction (and I suspect Xela's) is that she is so pretty and so sweet that you want to protect her from anyone who would be catty and snipe at her. And she also looks self-assured and calm which is remarkable for a girl her age with the weight of ladies figure skating on her shoulders. She may not give a spit what anyone thinks and if that is the case good for her. HOWEVER it is hard to look at such beauty and not see the possibilities. So I asked my niece and mentioned the young girls from "Dance Moms" on the red carpet and she liked some of those looks. She also mentioned an actress I've never heard of named Bailee Madison and her red carpet looks. The reason she likes Bailee is she has found she can go to stores locally and find the Bailee looks she likes for reasonable prices. And Bailee tends to stay on the conservative side unlike someone like Kylie Jenner.
So I thought I would share her suggestion. Anyway I suspect Zhenya will be on the cover of the Russian equivalent of Seventeen Magazine. I'd have her there anyway. Anna too.

She had it because she got teams that were ALREADY good. But she hasn't been able to make them improve more and this is it now.

S&K did improve with her that first season, but like Vassiliev said at the time, everyone wanted them because they seemed ready. And you'd have to be a complete trainwreck not to be able to make something of V&T. Wasn't she essentially an obscure junior coach prior to V&T joining her? And I thought they only joined her because she had already offered Stas Morozov a job, and Tatiana wanted to stay with him... so it was almost by luck that she got them (that, and Trankov's burned bridges with almost everyone else), and with them came all of the pre-Sochi funding and then she was given S&K and Bazarova/Larionov. It's not like she built the school up from scratch... she does have her own teams like T&M and Fedorova/Miroshkin, and they are very good, but I don't know that she's so good that she should be coaching virtually every pair with any kind of federation support.

T/M to Moskvina and S/K to Vasiliev I'd say...although the latter has got B/D already and probably wouldn't take them. Dmitriev would also be an option, but I want him to make wonders with A/R.

T&M to Moskvina is just so obvious that it pains me. And you know, Moskvina has always been up to the task of keeping up with technical developments even while giving her teams difficult choreography. Obertas/Slavnov had some weird programs but they were ahead of their time... over 10 years ago they were already doing quad twist, big throw triple flip (there was only like one other pair doing it at the time), 3t-3t sequence, and a third 3toe before they disallowed that (and she lost her jumps anyway). That would be competitive today.

I don't like Mozer's style that is very utilitarian and technical minded, doing the least choreography possible so the elements can be clean, and the elements are not even the most difficult ones. It's so Moscow. Gordeeva & Grinkov were like that too... so boring, so much untapped potential in their eligible programs and they were only interesting as pros, IMO.

I doubt that Vassiliev or Dmitriev would turn S&K down because of B&D or A&R. :P That would be OK, I think... one team trying to contend for gold, the other just trying to make the team. Dmitriev would be a dream for them, so much potential for voids.

I was thinking the same. I think they could add more nuances to it, to make it even more interesting, but it was a strong vehicle for them. The audience didn't seem to react much to it, it's sort of quiet and I guess it didn't appeal to the Boston audience.

T&M have such an ease, such lightness in their skating, and athleticism too. They were the only Russian pair that looked happy after their skates.

Yes to all of that. They are so refreshing to watch. I really disagree with people who have said they have "weak presentation." Their components are strong, it's just the choreography. The basic skating is very good.

It was fully rotated, IIRC, so it would receive the base value, and then could get -3 GOE, like a fall, if the judges agreed with you. It was odd, like she trains them without ever intending to land on one foot.

The Dracula music really brought out the power in their skating at the Europeans. May be they should keep it for one more season if they are serious about returning to competition. They could win worlds next year if they skate it clean. Not sure if they will need a quad twist to win.

I really doubt they will go to Worlds. It's a shame that Russia didn't get 2017 Worlds, then we'd see everyone going and training for peak performance there. As it is now, they might have trouble with spots especially in men's and dance.

I bolded only the portions I am responding to. I hope that's OK.

Moskvina would be wonderful for T&M but does she really want to take on another pair? She has been talking about retirement for many years now.

S&K were well received by the audience in Boston, though you have to understand that there were a lot of Candians in the audience and the Americans were more supportive of the Canadian pairs than any of the Russians. However, they were all very gracious in applauding what was done well, particularly by S&K and T&M. The woman who sat to my left was clearly pro-Canadian, but when S&K finished, she said (she seemed to appreciate true pairs skating)- the marks should be pretty good - and they were, but not as good as had they skated in the final group.

I didn't find G&G boring at all. You are right that their approach was very Moscow, meaning not much creativity. However, their skating was technically perfect and better than anyone else at that time. Their young age may also have kept them from trying something new. They were fabulous in 94. They were among the first to do a quad twist (they dropped it later because they were not getting much credit for it). Their throws were bigger than other pairs of their time. They were actually ahead of their time.

ITA that neither Vasiliev nor Dmitriev will turn down a top pair like S&K just because they are developing another pair.

I never understood the harsh criticism of T&M. They were well received in Boston. They just need more time to develop. Moskvina or Dmitriev could be a good thing for them.

It really is a shame that Sochi didn't get the 2017 worlds. However, it is close enough that there will be more Russians in attendance and it won't have the North American slant we saw in Boston. Helsinki is so close to St. Petersburg that it could be almost like home ice for skaters from Petersburg (unfortunately there aren't many).

I think if V&T decide to go to the 2018 Olympics, they HAVE to go to the 2017 worlds. They can't afford to do what Plushenko did in 2010 (and IMO it may have cost him the OGM but he came very close to it). I worry that they may have used up all their will power to bring Russia's glory back in 2014, and they may have some sort of a burnout. They will not be handed out anything the way G&G were. They will have to be even better than they were in Sochi.

I think S/K just need to stay healthy and they will be back on top. T/M need a new team though, it feels like their wasting potential

It's a huge misnomer that Moskvina choreographs anymore. Out of the 10 years K/S have been a team she only choreographed one program, a free skate. Anything she did prior she does no more She's not even good at helping with the twist and jumps. She's really only still around for Yuko, I wish they had moved to Oleg years ago.

T/M need a good choreographer, not necessarily a new coach.

Is it possible, in anyway, that S/K were hurt by the presence of V/T and that without them there they could have won the Bronze over S/M? V/T clearly seen as the Russian #1 weren't good enough to beat S/M but the judges wouldn't allow #2 to beat #1 so both ended up off the podium and S/M got Bronze?

Stolbova & Klimov just didn't look 100%. I think his injury really affected them, and you could see that live. I hadn't seen them live before, but the throws & twist just weren't traveling like the other top teams. (Any of the other top teams--not just the top three). Shoulder injuries are really nasty in pairs skating. I'm glad these two weren't pushing it. The injury doesn't explain the more obvious mistakes in the long program; but sometimes when one athlete is injured, the other skater is worried about the injured partner and makes the mistake. It was the overall impact of the power elements by S&K, though, that didn't compare at this competition. I think let him heal and let it go. They were under a time crunch, and it just didn't look like he had had enough time to get back to the level of where he needed to be.

They still had beautiful throws and great basic skating skills. Their choreography was complex. They were clearly better than S&M.

I think S/M making the podium leaves a worse after taste then D/R winning again simply because they are not at the same level of the top teams. They got potential but what they actually do on ice should not be considered good enough to win medals at big competitions. Their medal is just pure politics. I don't think any of the Russian teams made enough mistakes to justify them beating them let alone all three of them.

ITA. As much as I dislike D&R as a pair, they skated clean with high level of technical difficulty. Sui Han didn't get it done in the LP but neither pair was gifted their medals the way S&M were.

I would add...clean with the highest level of difficulty
I think that is what is supposed to win World Championships.
We were lucky enough to see it in all 4 disciplines this year.
It is not often you see that in these days of such high technical difficulty

I agree. I only said their win leaves a bad after taste simply because I can't stand their skating. I think their bringing pairs down the wrong path :shuffle: I would have preferred the Chinese if it couldn't be one of the Russians but with the way everybody skated they deserved it ;)

In men's and dance two would be nice but three is too much. Talent is not there. One is possible in both. I think too much is made of "developmental" spots.

Here is a Google translation of an article with Robin Szolkowy (original in German):

https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http://www.freiepresse.de/SPORT/Robin-Szolkowy-als-Trainer-weiter-in-Erfolgsspur-artikel9484884.php&edit-text=

If I'm reading this correctly, it says that Alexander Gazsi, former ice dancer, will choreograph programs for Tarasova/Morozov? Although it doesn't say which programs (gala, SP, or LP).

Maybe our friend @Jeschke can confirm from the original ...
Oh yes, I remember this. Evgenia or Vladimir (I don't recall which) posted a pic with Gazsi on instagram, he was doing a gala program for them.

The article states that Gaszi already successfully did a gala program for T/M but now has been commissioned to do a competitive program (not clear which one−maybe both?). And that it's a huge advantage that Gaszi's fluent in Russian, meanwhile Robin has to make himself understood mainly in English.

T&M should stop saving money on choreography and hire Tschernyshev

Hmmm, but the only gala program I know from them is that Lara Fabian one, and that doesn't seem like Gaszi's style at all. So if he did that one, then the new competitive program will probably be lyrical again.

Actually, the article doesn't state who the earlier exhibition program was for. In the
context I assumed it was T/M. Did Gaszi do an exhibition program for Aljona and Robin back in the day?

ETA: Robin is apparently working with two of Mozer's pairs but the other one isn't mentioned by name. So who is it?

I'm not 100% sure but I think it may be Zabijako/Enbert.

Navka should be modeling an orange jumpsuit (prison wear). Has she no shame?

Will you settle for black and white stripes?

Navka on vacation next to the yacht.

The latest news on Navka, which made all the headlines in tabloids as of 20 hours ago..(compiled translation from various publications):
“Navka lands in Dominican Republic, to take a well deserved vacation with her youngest daughter. At the age of 40, and fairly recently after child-birth, her body looks smashing in a skimpy bathing suite”.
