Well, the average regular person is not able to recognize the #26 and #47 player in the world. Heck many who watch tennis regularly(even outside of the grand slams) can't name the #26 and #47 players on either side. My mom and myself watch the game all time so we recognize and have seen many of the top 100 players(either in person or on TV). I tend to watch more women's tennis matches on the TV than men's though.

You're being sarcastic, right? Evert knows next-to-nothing about up and coming players like Halep and is incapable of analyzing their game and tendencies. Hence, predicting walks-in-park for both Halep (against Pennetta who always causes her problems) and Serena.

That was just awful - I mean he was just standing there and he was jumped on for absolutely no reason - talk about excessive force and this was in relation to a credit card scam :eek::rolleyes:. Thank goodness James wasn't mistaken for someone who did something more serious otherwise he could have been shot!! Apparently the officer who ends up sitting on James is on 'assignment'. Is that code for 'suspended'? It should be.

They just showed James Blake watching the Roger/Stan match. Luckily he didn't look the worse for wear after that horrible incident and he got a great hand from the audience.
 
I'm watching the repeat of the Serena match, and I know one isn't supposed to mention this, but has Serena gained weight?

The thing I respect most about her is the way she overcomes what would seem to be a heavy set body type. And maybe it's just an unflattering cut to her under shorts, but she looks heavier than I remember.
 
I am wondering if the postponement of both semifinal matches for the ladies may have affected the top two seeds? The pressure was on them and the extra tine to think may have disrupted their focus. The lower seeds had nothing to lose, no matter when they played.

You're being sarcastic right? Evert knows quite a bit about up and coming american girl players. The Evert Academy in Florida has seen the likes Madison Keys, Shelby Rogers, Taylor Townsend, Sloan Stephens, Lauren Davis and Bethanie Mattek-Sands over the last 5 or so years.

In regards to the matches today. I know Halep has struggled with Flavia in the past, but I thought Halep was playing extremely well and would get through the match. She lost the last games in the 2nd set and Flavia has not had a great year, in fact a rather disappointing year until the US Open.

Also, Flavia and Roberta are NOT up and coming players. Chris is well aware of their tennis games and ablities.
 
I don't know why folks feel bad for Serena, she had an off day in a world where she has an awful lot of good days. Of course missing history sucks

As for the Steffi asterick thing If we are going to give her an asterick for no Monica we should give Serena an asterick for not having to face someone like Monica repeatedly.

Personally I think both are two of the greatest ever.
 
Hingis won in the mixed doubles again! I'm glad she found a niche as a doubles specialist. I got to watch her last year and at least in doubles, you het a chance to appreciate her gifts without reisgning yourself to the fact that she'd get blown off the court.
 
I thought Roberta Vinci's post-semifinal interview was one of the most charming ever. What a sweetheart. I also found it kind of cool to have an all-Italian women's final, given how much depth there is among the Italian women. I was thrilled when Francesca Schiavone won the French Open. :)

Really looking forward to the men's final tomorrow!
 
Flavia Pennetta, age 33 and the 26th seed, won her first Grand Slam Final, the US Women's Tennis Open, by beating her best friend and compatriot Roberta Vinci, who is 32, was unseeded and had knocked Serena Williams out of the semi the day before. In the post match interview, Flavia announced her intended retirement at the end of the year! Flavia is engaged to Fabio Fognini, who didn't make it as far on the men's side, but he did manage to make his own bit of history when he came back from two sets down to upset Rafael Nadal in the third round. Both women had previously won Open Doubles Grand Slam tournaments with other partners.

Despite the obvious nerves early on, I enjoyed the women's final, there were some entertaining points and both players seem like delightful people. How wonderful for Flavoa to retire on such a high note!

I really like both the final two men's players, so I won't mind either winning, but I'm hoping more for Federer, I guess. His play these past two weeks has been sublime.
