Johnny Depp is in trouble for bringing his dogs into Australia without going through quarantine

Love this quote from our politician Barnaby Joyce (although this doesn't mean I like the politician personally)

Much as I oppose quanrantine, I say shame on Johnny Depp for putting his dogs in danger. If he sends the dogs out of the country they'll have another long flight to deal with - which is stressful for dogs - and then a change of home again, without their human - also very stressful.
 
My immediate response to "Johnny Depp in trouble over dogs" is "SO HE F*CKING WELL SHOULD BE!"

Australia has a unique and delicate biodiversity which survives because we enforce rigid quarantine rules. Some f*king egotistical wanker thinks he's above the protections and brings his dogs in without appropriate clearances. Send the dogs away. It would be a shame if they had to be destroyed, but you can put the blame square on their owner for that.

I totally agree with you - especially as the quarantine regulation is only10 days as long as the dogs are healthy and certified. These regulations exist for very valid reasons and no-one has any right to break them.
 
I'm confused why he doesn't have the option to put the dogs in quarantine now (rather than just fly them home or have them put down). Maybe they just do not want to reward the behavior by allowing it.

But I'm baffled by the number of Americans commenting on news stories (which granted, does not bring out our most intelligent people) who are swearing off all things Australian (like they were ever going to go visit...) because Australia murders helpless dogs without seeing that this is entirely Johnny Depp's fault for SMUGGLING in the dogs. They have all seem to read past that Johnny has the option to send them home- which he can certainly afford.

I'm guessing that, like people, it is much less stressful for a dog to fly on a private plane where they are pampered and can run around than on a commercial plane where they are tucked under a seat in coach or in the baggage hold. The pressure changes of take-off and landing probably bother them, but I bet they are just fine in the air. Especially if they are celebrity dogs who experience this a lot. The dogs will be just fine on the flight home to the USA.

Exactly - otherwise many others will smuggle their animals in - and all it needs is just one of those to be sick!!

The BBC have just reported that Johnny is indeed arranging for the dogs to be returned home so everyone can still buy Australian if they so desire ;).

People boycotting things over stupid things is not an exclusively US thing. Australians get their knickers in a knot over their fare share of stupid "we must boycott" stuff.

While I agree it's completely inappropriate for the dogs to be brought into the country without adhering to the quarantine, why would Australia put the dogs down rather than take possession of them & quarantine them? This is not a case concerning wild or neglected animals, they are domesticated dogs that can be examined, tested & quarantined. Threatening animal cruelty in worldwide news to make a point is ugly rhetoric. There are other things they can say or do to get their point across. Arrest Johnny Depp for his vile misdeeds, why kill the dogs?

There are too many dogs deserving of homes. Why would they place smuggled animals? Especially when he had the option to send them back!

it varies wildly depending on location. AFAIK quarantine is 6 months in Australia? but it might have changed.

btw for taking out kitties to the US all they needed was a rabies vaccine, a certificate of health from our vet and an inspection by animal control upon arrival.
 
Why, if it came to that point, would putting them down be option 1 rather than re-homing or even sending them back to a rescue in the U.S? Smuggled dogs aren't deserving of homes like the "too many dogs" you reference? There are too many dogs & cats in shelters due to all kinds of terrible ownership & circumstances. The opinion that we should rescue as many as we can prior to euthanizing healthy dogs is not an unreasonable one even when it is not always possible. Lots of people have that view who just like dogs & cats & aren't PETA members.

Do you think in the U.S. we should destroy smuggled animals from South America like parrots, amphibians, & other wildlife from South America or come up with other solutions when possible?

We already do destroy them. Customs isn't in the business of animal rescue.
 
There are many situations where they are turned over to U.S. Fish & Wildlife. I was not suggesting Customs should be in the business of animal rescue.
 
One of the articles said that it took about 7 months of prep & various tests before a dog was allowed into Australia, and THEN a 10 day quarantine.

This isn't just dogs being smuggled...this is Johnny Depp giving Australia the finger. They are pissed and rightfully so. Stupid on Depps part. I'm not advocating snuffing the dogs...let's put Depp in quarantine and find a nice home for the doggies.

I'm guessing cost. And just to be clear I'm not saying I agree with it, but an injection to the dog will be much cheaper than making all the necessary checks and quarantine (which I think would be 6 months if all the conditions had not been met for the country you leave from), or a flight back to the US. And who would you send it to if the owner shrugs and doesn't care?

It's a fairly new thing, and only when there's a lot of vet checks and official certificates beforehand, and also only from certain countries: http://www.smh.com.au/national/new-...rantine-for-imported-pets-20131122-2y1mz.html

When we brought our cat from the UK in 2010, he was in quarantine for a month. It would have been 3 months had we been coming from North America. It was less time because we were travelling from another rabies-free country. There was a lot of official paperwork that had to be filled out by authorised vets, and then signed off before he could travel, and also lots of regulations to follow regarding things like size of crate and so on. We used a specialist pet travel company to make sure we got it all right.

Even though Depp came in on a private jet, he still had to fill out an incoming passenger card, just like any other arriving visitor. There's a question on it asking if you are bringing in any animals. So he clearly checked the 'no' box. It's an official document, so if nothing else, there's a breach of the law for lying on the form.

I doubt the dogs being put down was ever actually looked at as an option (the politician Barnaby Joyce is a buffoon - wouldn't pay any attention to what he said), and I wouldn't support that, but I hope they slap Depp with a hefty fine.

Both he & his wife should certainly have consequences including a fine. Although fines obviously & unfortunately make no difference to celebrities like Depp.

Also agree they probably wouldn't have put the dogs down, yet it is still unfortunate when someone in a national leadership position is so callous & uses animal cruelty pronouncements as the way to resolve issues & get his 15 minutes in the news. I doubt true prevention was the root cause of his diatribe. Hawaii doesn't have rabies either but we normally don't read about the governor threatening to destroy domestic animals needlessly.

Some articles in Australia have noted that the US has same/similar laws for bringing pets into the US, so here is a recent case showing something other than putting down healthy animals can be done.

It was necessary to obtain permission from U.S. Customs: Animal welfare and Agriculture, U.S. Agriculture, U.S. Border Protection, and the Texas Department of Health. In addition, Texas Parks and Wildlife had to declare the cat and her babies to be domestic animals and not wildlife.

Johnny Depp was a huge douche to put his poor dogs through this drama. He fails as a dog keeper.
