I think the ultimate issue is that world qualifying doesn't really work. The reason why people want teams to retire isn't because of what they are or are not bringing to the table, but instead that it can often feel so stagnant year after year. If it were up to me, the ISU would reform how qualifying worked so that it wasn't necessarily dependent on national results but instead world standings or something. I don't know how they would do it, but it is deeply frustrating when teams are medalling at 4CC and then not making Worlds a month later because there isn't the spots available.

Well, it’s also the luck of having a top ten team ahead of you. Bekker/Hernandez won’t get a GP at this point but they get to go to Euros thanks to F/G. Same for Mrazeks (who qualified to GP anyway as junior champions.) terrific teams like Bashynska/Beaumont get to wait in line with several world-eligible teams ahead of them. :(

Adding my praise for G&P's truly stunning FD. Truly stunning, exceptional music, and the whole thing is gripping from start to finish. Best thing they've ever done, yes above Vincent. Incredible.

I used to low -key stan Alison & Saul, but it's evolved to high key wishing they could medal at euros one year. I really adore them.

It's great that they gave some other teams a slot but if I were Skate Canada, I'd have given that host spot to B/B...

Reposting this from the SC FD thread if anyone has ideas on why Reed & Ambrulevicius got a ! on their choreo steps.

It's really unclear to me what happened with Reed & Ambrulevicius. They were never more than two arms lengths apart. They went barrier to barrier. It went along the short axis, so not the same pattern as the step sequence. So, that leaves a retrogression. The only thing I could see that vaguely could be considered that is toward the end of the choreo steps when she's being pulled away from the judges and they both move back slightly, but at that point the element should be over? Anyone have any ideas?

They fell on the choreo spin apparently
Komatsubara/Koleto had -3 in deductions total - Misato posted about the -2 deduction on the slide move in response to a fan (machine translated): https://twitter.com/miichan728/status/1718585186886279220
That's right, it was a choreography slide 🚀 The time before [Tim] stood up was already counted, and the part after that where the two of them went around ended up being a spectacular 2-fall. I've received questions from people around me, so I'd like to share them with you. I didn't understand it at all, so I'm grateful to know it now 🙏🌱 I'll fix it!

Erhm..... is there any place here to discuss the headscratcher that Russian Ice Dance is?

Why do they give out those types of scores? Are Stepanova and Bukin really 87+ and 128+ ice dancers? Colour me confused..

I’ve not watched them skate in a really long time but they do have a better tech coach now who has more political pull. Not only that but if they were competing internationally they would likely be in the lead Euro spot that G/F currently are and in the fight for the world title. TLDR: they probably would be scoring like this if they were up against the current field.

I admit, I’m disappointed G and P are not doing a voidy Kate Bush Wuthering Heights program 😜

I found the program ok, I appreciated it as a whole and how there weren’t a lot of music cuts. But I guess I am a bit over the number of lyrical FDs there are this year. So. Many. And this music had very high notes that almost shrieked and bothered my ears. I know that’s ironic given that I was hoping for a Kate Bush program.

I was not a fan of the RD.

I think at the beginning of their ChSt, they seem to be more than two arms apart during some moments?
Maybe this is the Technical Panel’s message saying “There should be more dancing in holds in ice dancing!”

I am a huge Kate Bush fan and have longed for skaters to use her more. I think some synchro teams could kill with a selection from Side 2 of her Hounds of Love album.

But I think her Gilles/Poirier picked the right music for the type of FD they wanted to create. This music really sets the scene for me.

I do, however, think Chock/Bates would do great with the Kate Bush version as it would play more to their strengths.

And wouldn't that be fun, dueling Wuthering Heights :D

I wanted a Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights" FD too, but the mood and dramatics Gilles/Poirier gave us with the FD they did provide was not far off from what I had been imagining with a Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights" FD.

I think our best bet for a voidy Kate Bush FD is a rising up and coming team who is trying to get noticed and positioning themselves for a future podium spot. Not a top team trying to win a championships and therefore feeling they need to play somewhat safe.

My first experience with the song Wuthering Heights was my dad (who is not a good singer even with normal male vocal range) singing along to the highest notes.

So yeah, would’ve been fun if they brought the voids, but I like this so far. I think Piper needs more faces that aren’t an “O” face it’s getting distracting.

I’m very grateful they didn’t use the Kate Bush version but then I’ve never liked her voice. :slinkaway
Leave...this... house!!! (Look up the movie "Jeffrey" - apologies to Sir Patrick Stewart).

Would you prefer the version recorded by Pat Benatar?

Re-posting here from the Finnish news thread in GSD:
Catching up with Finland’s Yuka Orihara and Juho Pirinen by Judith Dombrowski (October 18, 2023):
Direct link to the 24-minute interview on Golden Skate's YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoIq3yAeFmw
This was a delightful interview. And I think for the ice dance fans, they give really good insight into the not-easy process of selecting the music for the 80's rhythm dance this season. They expressed their personal need to stay away from 80's rock and were very forthright about the other selections that were considered and rejected. They were just as open about their FD program and song choices. I love when skaters are less guarded about sharing developmental steps for creating their programs.

Tech panel at GP France is Michela Cesaro, Taehwa Yang and Stefano Caruso.
So very Italian.

Denis Ten Memorial have Halina again (Lombardia Trophy, Nepala Trophy, Finlandia Trophy, Mezzaluna Cup) with Grincova (JGP Yerevan) and Gijtenbeek (JGP Bangkok, Nebelhorn, Finlandia Trophy) as TechSpecialists.
Panel of judges is: Georgia, Bulgaria, Israel, Turkey (yes, Ece Esen), Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine. With Yuri Kliushnikov as referee.

Scratching my head here as well. What is so special about S&B? Why are they treated like King and Queen?

And they’ve already given the Kazakh team the junior worlds RD minimum. 😆
