William Hurt RIP

He was 71. :(
Excerpt from the end:
Like many of the greatest actors, William Hurt could explode or simmer, seduce or stalk, depending on what the role required. He was clearly intelligent, but he could believably, memorably play dumb (“Broadcast News,” “I Love You to Death”). He could garner sympathy, or act as an audience conduit into a strange new world or, with just a few muttered sentences, leave you fearing for your life.
He leaves behind a rich legacy of unforgettable moments: smoothly hosting a news segment with Holly Hunter’s voice in his ears in “Broadcast News”; panting with raw, erotic desperation over Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat” before throwing a patio chair through her window; leading Solveig Dommartin on a globe-trotting chase in Wim Wenders’ “Until the End of the World”; bonding with Harold Perrineau in Wayne Wang’s “Smoke.” Funny, romantic, terrifying, intense, absurd; Hurt could be all of this and more over the course of a landmark screen career.

One of my 80s icons (and crushes), I loved him in The Big Chill, Children of a Lesser God, Broadcast News and The Accidental Tourist. What he did to Marlee Marlin cannot be forgotten, but I hope he sought help. His acting legacy was immense.

What did he do?
“Marlee Matlin made history in 1987 as the youngest person and the first deaf performer to win an Academy Award for Best Actress, according to Biography. It should have been a joyous time, but as the "CODA" actor recalled in her 2009 memoir, "I'll Scream Later," the night was ruined by her then-boyfriend, William Hurt. As reported by Daily Beast, Matlin said that, in their limo, Hurt coldly asked her, "What makes you think you deserve it? There are hundreds of actors who have worked for years for the recognition you just got handed to you."

Plus he physically abused and sexually assaulted her.

I agree, it's sad what he did to Marlee Matlin. Unfortunately that's what I'll remember him for. It doesn't matter how good an actor he was, his character is what he'll be remembered for.
