I'll be working in Newark, NJ for a few months, in the Gateway Center buildings, Raymond Plaza, directly across from Newark Penn Station. I don't know from Newark. If you're familiar with Newark and/or that neighborhood, please let me know what you know re: the neighborhood, safety of walking around there, stuff to do, places to park, and so on.

If you're familiar with the Ironbound Rec Center (which has a skating rink, apparently), let me know about that as well. Is there parking there, for example? They do not have a website.

There are some areas where you need to be very aware of your surroundings, like many other inner cities.

I am not in Newark often but the train station is right smack on a highway running through the city (route 21). On one side of the highway and train station is water, the rest of the city is on the other side -- downtown Newark in that particular spot. I would think it's pretty safe but I don't really know.

I have found the NJ section of this forum to be an invaluable source of info for situations like yours. It helped me figure out where to move in NJ and the info turned out to be solid. http://www.city-data.com/forum/
