Were These Epic Olympic Skates?

Warming up for Cortina I`ve been watching past Oly competitions. Some strike me as more than just winning; They were epic performances (short & Long). Some were performances well beyond the skater`s personal bests. Others won well ahead of the other skaters or shattered world records. You may have other definitions.

I`ve put two below. Are there performances you would classify as epic? Post so we can see.

Kerrigan 1994 - While being beaten by a hair Kerrigan skated beyond anything she`d ever done before. (Partly influenced by the beauty of her skating. Like Wylie everything was stretched and in good positions)

Kim 2010 - Probably on everyone`s list. Hard to find a quibble here, though I`m not the best "point" person. (Maybe by today`s standards there were unders/edge issues.)

Mishkutenok & Dmitriev (RUS) - 1994 Olympics

They were the reigning Olympic Champions that couldn't and weren't going to win but they didn't back down. Quite frankly, could've and should've won but they weren't good enough although they were good enough.

Liudmila Belousova / Oleg Protopopov (USSR) - FS - 1968 Olympics

At age 32 and 35, they were too old to be at the Olympics, let alone winning, according to their own federation.

In these older pairs clips the side by side spins are beautiful. Hardly anyone gets it right these days. It`s obviously hard to do. IJS should add points to it. I miss this side of pairs.

Evan Lysacek, 2010. Skate of a lifetime, never quite as good before or after. Skated with great freedom and precision. Beat Plush!

He was free and skated without nerves.

Which is … if you can wire your brain … how the Olympic should be. Like Michelle seemed nervous twice in her life 98 and 02 Olympics. And kind of results in tight landings and a bit of stiffness.

I can’t wait to see Alysa in Milano because she is another who skates without nerves.

Baiul 1994 LP - oh yes, Nancy absolutely should have won and this is even more clear through a modern IJS lens. But you can still see why Oksana won...this was so free, skated with abandon, and just fun. Somehow she manages to balance camp and class. Even that janky 2A+2T at the very end is somehow....charming.

Kostner 2014 LP - should have won the competition, hands down. No question.

Klimova/Ponomarenko 1992 FD - absolutely stunning program and performance. one of the all time great dances and criminally undermarked, despite the win.

Grace Gold (USA) - 2014 Olympics

It is surprisingly difficult to find her programs given she skated well and finished 4th 😉 ... if you know, you know.

I would say that M/K's LP in Albertville 1992 was also memorable. I recall she was always having trouble landing the 3T in competition but did it when it counted.

I also think that U/Z's Four Seasons FD in Albertville was the seminal routine to that particular music.

The final group of the pairs LP in 1994 Lillehammer was as an event rather epic -> B/E, M/D, G/G and S/N all having near if not their best skates ever.

Like it or not, Tara Lipinski's LP in Nagano 1998 was pretty epic.

Alexei Yagudin's Man in the Iron Mask LP in SLC 2002 was epic.

Nathan Chen's SP in Beijing 2022 was epic. He was a popped jump in the LP short of epic status.

Yagudin skated to "The Man in the Iron Mask" at the 02 Olympics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TJpt27FXFM

Not an Oly skate but epic all the same. Javier with Frank Sinatra. Fernandez was a stylist able to absolutely capture the mood of this Guys and Dolls number. Probably the best skate of his career?

I was in Boston for that and it remains one of my fav ever men's FS..
