Vincent Zhou cheer thread

I think that's the perfect vehicle for him. Vincent has always been a somewhat soulful skater and I think this program taps into that. I know some of his past vehicles were more showcases for his jumps because he's still developing and wants to master the highly demanding and ambitious tech content but he seemed into the ballads. I still remember his Olympic SP music choice haha. How appropriate that he's skating to a song about another Vincent.

I see alot of improvement. I wish he would make his way back to Canada and get away from Tom Z.

I posted this new article in the U.S. Men's thread earlier today (Tom Z. isn't mentioned in it):
Excerpts:
Zhou has remained in Colorado Springs for the past five months and is unsure where he will end up next, under whose tutelage and when that next move may come. Whether he ever returns to Toronto depends on his ability to cross the border and the risk of being in a country where he does not have health insurance. Zhou admitted that if he remains in the U.S., it would make more sense to have an in-person coach.
Regardless of what his future holds, the brief time he already had with Barkell and Nichol helped Zhou immensely.
"I think my skating skills improved greatly – being able to spend more time with Lori than before," he said, referring to the fact Nichol had choreographed two programs for him in the past. "I think Lee has a very well-rounded approach to training his skaters and that also contributed to improvement in spins and choreography. I also think that the level-headed approach to my training those few weeks helped me learn a lot about myself as an athlete and helped me learn more about what works for me and what doesn't in my own training."
For now, he has taken occasional lessons from former coach Christy Krall for his skating skills – and had some remote coaching from his Toronto team – but is primarily on his own.

Vincent also confirmed in the article that Lori Nichol remotely choreographed his "Vincent" SP and he just posted his SP announcement via IGTV video (includes clips from his Cup of Colorado skate): https://www.instagram.com/tv/CEHhclVH02-/

ETA that Vincent announced his FS music ("Algorithm" by Muse" choreo. by Misha Ge) on July 18: https://www.instagram.com/p/CCxhp7XH4IV/
Vincent debuted this program at the Cup of Colorado this past Saturday - thanks to @DobrinFan for this video from the livestream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mn3uxOoDbb8
Jumps: 4Lz+3T (+GOE=19.53 points), 3F, 4S<, 3A, 4T< fall, 3A+2T, 'Rippon' 3Lz+1Eu+3S; received level 4 on 2 spins & the footwork sequence, tripped & fell in his final choreographic footwork seq. He scored 176.69 [92.19 TES/86.50 PCS -2 ded.].

ISU's interview & retrospective feature with Vincent (Sept 17, 2020):
Excerpt from the end:
Vincent is entering his fourth senior season and is looking ahead. “Right now, my sights are fully set on the 2022 Olympic podium. We choreographed this year's programs with the 2022 Olympics completely in mind, and everything I am doing now is to ensure that when the time comes, I will be in the best possible condition and will be able to skate like I've always dreamed of--with great quads as well as great performance and artistry. Nobody is sure about the competition situation yet for this season, but I just did a small local one in Colorado and got off to a great start to the season. My programs this year are two of my favorites and I can't wait to perform them on the big stage. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can accomplish, and I'm going to fight for another World medal,” he concluded.
Link to watch & hear Ted Barton's commentary on Vincent's winning FS at 2017 Junior Worlds:

New article by Lynn Rutherford (Sept. 21) - cross-posting here and in the U.S. Men's thread in GSD:
Excerpt:
“I parted with Lee [Barkell] on good terms,” he said. “I’m still in contact with Lori, and when she has time we’re still doing some virtual choreography sessions.”
Zhou also couldn’t move to Japan, where he trained for the 2019 world championships with Mie Hamada. So, it was back to Colorado Springs, where he and mom Fay Ge first moved in 2005. After several months working primarily on his own, he formally reunited with two former coaches, Christy Krall and Tom Zakrajsek.
Krall, a 1964 U.S. Olympian, sees a marked difference between the Zhou of 2018, and the person he is today.
“With his college experience — or maybe he’s more mature — he has an agenda, and he sticks to it,” she said. “He’s a driven worker, and he’s very organized, which I’m very proud of. He wasn’t a couple of years ago. He’s totally stoked to be the best he can be, rise above the estimation of any judge and just skate the dynamics that he can.”

Here's Vincent's "Cafecito con Masha" conversation earlier today:

He said at the end that he plans to record/submit programs for the 2nd ISP Points Challenge (videos are scheduled to be posted in USFS' Fan Zone on Tuesday, Oct. 6).

Fan Zone article by Megan Sauer:
Excerpt:
Zhou, along with the rest of the skating community, is hopeful athletes will compete the 2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships and ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2021 in some capacity. Whatever happens, he dedicating the next year to "improving the small things."
"I want high levels. I want high GOEs," Zhou said. "I'm improving the aesthetics of my jumps and straightening my legs, because it's one thing to do different kinds of quads, it's another thing to do them with great, quality consistency."
The 2019 World bronze medalist is also changing his mentality, for the rest of this season, the Olympic cycle and his career.
"I want to get to the point where I can challenge for gold because I'm going for that Olympic medal," Zhou said. "I know if I relegate myself to being second all the time, that isn't a great mindset if I want a top spot. So, I want to really push myself to start challenging the title more."

I attended a Zoom fan meeting with Vincent Zhou (held by his Japanese fan club).
I tweeted about it with some screen shots of Vince (he put on kimono himself and in a pretty proper way!)

The gist of the chat:
  • Favorite programs of other male skaters: Lysacek's 2009-2010 FS, Hanyu's Romeo and Juliet (earlier version)
  • The moments he felt happiest: 2017 Jr World (he won after having a hard time with hip injury); 2018 Olympic Games FS ; 2019 Worlds (he had to deal with many UR calls throughout the season and then he got bronze medal here)

  • Vince hangs out with Tomoki and Camden every week. He plans to do Broadmoor Open, Cranberry Open and Nebelhorn Trophy.
  • He will make an announcement about his new programs on Instagram soon.

Vince is very charming and answering all questions by his fans and accommodating fans' wish to take certain poses so that we could take screen shots of him (some of them are in my tweets).

And he has so many stuffed toys! 😄

I am so happy for Vincent winning gold at Skate America! His reaction was priceless. This must feel so good for him after the devastation at last Worlds. He looks so much more prepared than many others at this point in the season. Hoping he is able to maintain and make the Olympic team, and have a terrific Olympic experience! :cheer2:

Technical score came down in the free program by the time all was said and done, how many under rotations received? Originally his technical score I think was 119

Happy 21st Birthday to Vincent today! (Oct. 25) :)

Pre-Skate America feature article on Vincent Zhou by Karen Rosen (Oct. 21) that I originally posted in the U.S. Men's thread:
Excerpts:
On this season’s Grand Prix circuit, Zhou will compete in Skate America in Las Vegas Oct. 22-24, then at NHK Trophy in Tokyo Nov. 12-14 with hopes of qualifying for the Grand Prix Final in December.
Zhou won his first Grand Prix medal, a silver at Skate America last season, but that was mostly a domestic competition. ...
“Obviously, the depth of the field this year is greater and it would be a great honor to be able to stand on that podium this year,” said Zhou. “The most important thing is to have consistent results this year and maintain those results at nationals. So far this year, I’ve had a more consistent streak than I ever have before and my performance under pressure has been much better than in previous seasons.”
“This year I find that flame has returned and it’s returned in full force,” Zhou said. “Every single day, no matter good or bad, I have that end goal in sight. I just have this boundless drive to want to show just how good I can be, and I think what’s more valuable than anything else is having that desire and believing in myself.”
After this season, the Palo Alto, California, native plans to return to Brown to earn his degree, likely studying business development or possibly marketing, finance or economics.
“Academics has always been my family’s No. 1 priority,” Zhou said. “I definitely still want to keep skating, but we’ll see how it goes.”
NBC Sports uploaded his Skate America SP (with Weir/Gannon commentating; think these are geoblocked outside the USA): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNTLw45jKcQ

Vincent spoke to Andrea Joyce on Sunday (day after his huge victory) during NBC's broadcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4BCsXU5oks

His post yesterday: https://www.instagram.com/p/CVaTHxDr5bK/
I came into #SkateAmerica with certain goals in mind and well trained and prepared to go after them, but to win the gold medal was something that I didn't expect. It hasn't quite sank in yet, but this is such a humbling and incredible experience and I'm so grateful to my team, all the staff and volunteers, the audience, and everyone who made this possible. Thank you all so much!
He's currently listed at the top of the ISU Season Best Total scores list in all 3 categories (97.43 SP, 198.13 FS, 295.56 Total) .
I just checked his ISU bio and turns out his ISU personal best scores are still from 2019 World Team Trophy: http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00034362.htm

Congrats again to Vincent. One thing he and his choreographer could do to make the LP 'pop' and go a long way is to accentuate his arm and leg movements throughout the choreo, make them more jagged (for lack of a better word - think Bruce Lee) to reflect the music and make his program more noticeable. He tends to be a little soft in his movements and the music IMO requires a touch more than that.

I'm not sure what kind of promotional video this is
It's a paid partnership with IGG's "Time Princess" cosplay mobile game, as Vincent explains here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXfMPkJg-NQ/

ETA from the U.S. Men's thread:

I came across the first of NBC Olympics' figure skater profiles to be published on their website (Dec. 8) - "As part of our preparation for the 2022 Winter Games, NBC Olympics sent questionnaires to multiple athletes to learn more about their lives both inside and outside of sports. Here’s what we found out about Zhou":

Here's a 4Lz practice clip Vincent shared recently: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXeUJripr8w/
