Versatility/artistic range

Often we speak about certain skaters being especially versatile or having a wide artistic range.

What do we mean by those terms?
Do they refer to genre or to other kinds of movement/expressive qualities that may remain similar across genres?
Is it more about type of music chosen or what the skater does with the music?

Do we award the praise across a body of work (giving older/more experienced skaters an advantage)? Should exhibition and professional performances be figured in the evaluations?

Do/should judges care? I.e., should versatility somehow be rewarded in competition scores?

There is criterion for "variety and contrast" within the Performance program component, but that's more on a micro level.

Back in the day, Elvis Stojko stuck to one style after 1995. All things considered, he did pretty well doing 'motor-cross on ice'. I wonder how he would do under IJS?

IDK. It seems almost like one of those catch 22 bs type situations. I felt like Kwan reinvented herself more often than Madonna, yet is saddled with the “same old same old” label. Plus whenever she did try different stuff (MM, DITL, Rush, etc) the judges hated it. She showed up in SLC with a warmed over version of her epic Nagano SP, did one of her worst 3fs and they were like “hand that girl the gold!”
