Tony Award Nominations announced

I predict "Escape to Margaritaville" will close before the actual award ceremony. It is the only currently running new show the was completely shut out of the nominations - ouch. Of course, if you read the Wikipedia synopsis, you'll realize it seems like Buffett and the writers put the story together in 5 minutes. After several rounds of margaritas. Read: Really, Jimmy, don't you have enough money ALREADY?????

Just saw Once on this Island, wonderful show, hope it wins for best revival but that will be tough against Carousel and My Fair Lady.

Kind of surprised at the lack of acting nominations for Frozen. Based on previous nominations (Drama Des, Drama League), I expected Jelani Alladin and maybe Patti Murin to get nominations.

Drama Desk nominations are determined by like eight random people with no overlap with the Tony voting body, so it makes sense when you look at it that way. Isn't the Drama League like paying members meaning that all one has to do is pay a fee and they'll get nominating and voting power? If that's the case, then it's really a popularity contest and they tend to try to have an actor or two from every new production be included...except for Spongebob apparently.

Over 100 people are part of the Drama Desk organization (not a huge amount, but still) and to be a bit more competitive in a way, the awards include Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway.

For the Drama League, only one single performer (play OR musical) can win each year, and a person cannot win twice in a career. Pretty competitive!

But in any case, there is often a lack of overlap, and winners of Drama Desk occasionally aren't even nominated for Tonys. It's kind of like the Golden Globes vs Oscars in that respect, but it can often be seen as a bit of a predictor for Tonys.

I agree with that. I think the actual voting body consists of like a little over 100 people for the Drama Desk but only eight people are actually in charge of nominating.
