The Shibutanis Thread Cinco...Mambo!

The Shibs were guests on Olympic Ice and were asked if they would attend Worlds and Alex said that Worlds is next but they have not made a decision yet.

The Shibs were very eloquent and thoughtful on Olympic Ice just now, and superficially, Maia is stunning on and off the ice.

How far along did they get at U of Michigan? I wonder how interested they are in finishing.

I noticed in the Daily Mail article that Alex referred to himself as "a historian." Is he majoring in history at Michigan?

The way the sport is currently constructed, that would be difficult with a strong team like P/C at the top. The best the Shibs could look forward to is perhaps another silver medal at Worlds, and they already have one, along with two World bronze medals and two Olympic bronze medals, plus a slew of national and international medals of all colors.

glad to see the positive comments, they're always a joy to read^^

i especially like this comment:
I remember an American brother-sister pair back in the 80s. I never understood the taboo. There's a special love between siblings that may not be romantic, but isn't necessarily any less powerful. I don't remember the names of that pair decades ago, but I remember one of them summed up their relationship by saying, "We fight like brother and sister, but we also love each other like brother and sister."

There's also a chemistry between siblings that can be exploited in any art form. It's what made the Everly Brothers so successful, e.g. Because they were genetically similar, they could harmonize better than two unrelated singers. In the same way, the Shibs probably are capable of anticipating what the other will do in any situation on the ice in a way that unrelated pairs can't.

I’m not ready to think about a potential retirement yet. I just wanna enjoy their phenomenal skates and bronze medals for just a little longer right now :biggrinbo

They did say at the press conference after the FD that they still wanted to go to worlds so unless something changed between last night and now we’ll just have to wait and see.

Also, just gotta say one more time...
#ShibsForAllMedals
#SorryNotSorry

I still can’t believe it actually happened.

Yes, please!!, not moment to comment here about retirement, not even 24 hours have passed since they won their medal, let us be happy :biggrinbo

this is the fifth shib thread, does anyone have the links to the previous ones?

:( that is the reason because I don´t love new threads, sorry, no, I don't think you can find old threads here, but in the first post of this thread, you can find the link to the last thread, at least. Maybe we should put links of all the threads from now on.

yeah i would really really appreciate links to previous threads. it's very important because it's how i catch up on everything quickly (i can speed through a 300 paged thread in a couple days!). thank you for responding~^^

Good idea about finding all the old Shibs fan threads. I may make it a project of mine to find 1 and 2 if possible and if nobody has done it yet. I’m sure they will be a real stroll down memory lane and a trip to read. Lots of anxiety and sadness and happiness and pure glee to be found in those.

For now you can enjoy this fan fest thread from Goldenskate where the first post is from 2012:

I remember when I first became a Shibs fan a couple of years ago I went through the entire goldenskate Shibs fan thread over a few days and it was a real adventure. I learned so much about their career and personalities, and it was fun to learn about them that way.

I have been reading some comments on goldenskate and FSU and I just wanted to remind you that these forums are just a tiny sample of the skating fans. On tumbrl, youtube, twitter, instagram and some other forums, it's amazing how it's not even just that people prefer the Shibs, in those places it's often as if certain other teams did not exist, not that they speak ill of them , they are simply ignored.

The first 2 threads are archived (need a subscription to view); the next 2 seem to have escaped the FSU Archives to date so read them while you can :):

#1 (March 2014-Jan. 2016): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/the-shibutanis-thread.91936/

#2 (Jan.-Dec. 2016): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/shibutanis-thread-2-lights-will-guide-you-home.97763/

ETA that @Vash01 may have started the first ShibSibs fan thread back in June 2009 --- link to the archived thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/maia-alex-shibutani.66656/

So if we decide don´t create more threads all the information from now on will be available, right? Is it not obligatory create new threads?

I'm not an Admin here so I can't answer your first question (maybe post in the Board Business forum?). I believe all threads are supposed to be archived after a certain amount of time has passed but I've noticed it's not always done on a consistent basis.

I found this May 2012 article in the Archives (unfortunately their photos are no longer available to view on IN):
Here's Maia and Alex Shibutani's personal account of their U.S. State Dept. dinner last week in Washington, DC: http://www.icenetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120508&content_id=30719578&vkey=ice_news
ETA: I've edited my reply above to clarify that I was referring to chapis' first question, now bolded by me above. It is not obligatory to create new fan/cheer threads (after 1000 posts) but that doesn't necessarily mean that this one won't be archived at some point.

hi, the link is bromen! :( do you think you could give another one?

I just clicked on the first Shibs thread (not the very first one from 2009 that @Vash01 created which I'm amazed Sylvia found and am grateful to Vash01 for making), and it's a hoot to skim a few of the posts in the first like four pages wondering if the Shibs will struggle to make it on the 2018 team with all the new teams coming up, and how their career in finished and me worrying and while seeing my new profile picture pop up next to my username of the Shibs with their two Olympic bronze medals.

well, I can´t access that thread but I can remember those discussions. Just to give you an idea of the value of the predictions that several people are making right now .

"Shibutanis are done. They are never winning another world medal."

Hahaha that thread is gold!

With Marina, I won't go into it to much but her interactions with them always seems to be like the way a parent treats their youngest kids while and after dealing with two high-achieving and rivaling older children who just left home and the younger kids already sort of grew up once the parent could devote more attention and time to them.

This. You spoke for me.
