The Shibutanis Thread Cinco...Mambo!

I don't know if any of you are searching the Shibs on Twitter, but tons of new people are commenting about how beautiful they are and how they can't wait to see them skate "in the pairs" competition. I've been semi-busy responding to random people's tweets and letting them know when Maia and Alex are actually skating.

I don’t have twitter but that’s great to hear! I’m glad people are already excited to see them and they’re getting the attention they deserve, and that you’re there to answer new admirers’ questions and guide them into the fandom ;)

When you attract to the no nothing casuals who dont even know the difference between pairs and dance, that is when you know you have made it big.

Judging from USFS's IG I wonder if the Shibs marched in the opening ceremonies. Maybe they prefer to use the day in-between the opening and the TE SD to rest and practice since it is the first event on Saturday and at 10:00 am.

Exactly what I was wondering. Anna, Luca, Valentina, Ondrej did not go either. Same for the French figure skating team. It's so cold that many of them prefer to stay healthy and that is wiser, everyone will have time for the Closing ceremony anyway.

yes, it seems they skipped the ceremony. I did not realize that they compete the morning after the ceremony, so it makes sense, especially if skaters have difficult to wake up early to practice, the best is go early to the bed, in fact, I am surprised that Bradie was in there because she will be competing a few hours later too, but it is her first Olympics so, I understand that she is excited.

The competition takes place two mornings after the ceremony, but I figure the ice dancers have the earliest start time and would rather focus a whole extra day on just training and resting and sleeping early since there's no other skating events or media commitments, etc. Of course Tessa and Scott not only marched in the opening but were the flag bearers, but then they're Virtue/Moir and can handle a lot of things.

Oh you are right, I just read Saturday and I thought that it was Korea time but was my time, of course, I can´t watch it Saturday night  :wuzrobbed. Maybe I'll figure out something.

I think competing in the early morning hours, especially for the first group looks to be challenging. Now, that is no excuse, sure, but getting up, getting going, then getting pumped-up for a competition that early is entirely different than getting up for practice. I kind of wish the schedule would have been left alone… All this to accommodate the viewing audience, to avoid tape delay. Psh, it’s not that bad, imho.

So cute
¨MS: He wanted to be a basketball player, and our parents are really short and they're like, "Go for it."
AS: Yes. They looked at their kid, and he's like, "I want to play in the NBA," and they're like, "You go for it. Enjoy yourself. Follow your dreams and your passions," and then finally, I found something that made a little bit more sense, but yes, our parents are amazing. People that we look up to-¨

I saw on twitter I think, that Meryl interviewed them too, I don´t know where is the video.

My niece who attends Geo. Wash Univ. texted me last night during the Men's SP to ask why weren't the Shibs skating next in the pairs.
i said have I not taught you anything about skating since you were 3. She said a lot of her friends and other students
love the Shibs (from youtube) and Alex is especially popular with her dorm-mates. I had to laugh. They love the Shibs but
they don't even know what discipline they skate. Pretty cool!

They are also gaining quite a following on Instagram. Last I checked, Maia had over 140,000 and Alex over 120,000! :cheer:

I like this interview. Alex is definitely the funny one of the pair. And he is always so supportive of Maia. I have a great older brother too - it is a wonderful gift that not every sibling has.

I just realized this tweet by Chris Knierim seems to indicate Alexa and Alex are the team event captains.
https://twitter.com/ChrisKnierim/status/961825879482511362

Totally did not make the connection with Chris’s typo lol. I was like, Alexa is in the...caption? How does this relate to Alex being at practice?? Lol.

Clearly, Alex and Alexa were chosen because they pretty much have the same name. Team captain requirement #1: easy to remember names. :D

Amazing for Alex though. I think he’s a great choice for a team event captain and it makes sense to have separate captains just for the figure skating team event.

I read in icenetwork instagram that they are not captains but spoker person
Same Patrick Chan is for Canada while V/M are captains.

Really? I found this on their IG that seems to confirm Alexa and Alex are team captains

https://instagram.com/p/Be9pWx9l7U5/

ETA: you’re right chapis, I just read the rest of the comments. It seems these guys are “Team Event Spokespersons”

Evan Bates and V/M are team captains. Confusing haha

Seriously. Just last week Maia had like 138K followers and Alex had like something like 117K or something. Now Maia is at 144K and Alex is at 122K and they haven't even skated yet.

Interesting article, their parents talk about the sacrifices they had to do for Alex and Maia´s career. They had already decided to settle permanently in Connecticut and they built a house that they had to sell shortly after to move to Colorado Springs where Maia and Alex had more opportunities for sport. And how her dad traveled from NY to Colorado Springs each week and how her mom become in kind of a single parent. Lately, their dad took a new job and he commutes back and forth from Boston every week.

I do not wonder why Maia and Alex are so proud of their parents and are so grateful to them.
