The Shibutanis Thread Cinco...Mambo!

How many twizzles total in their SD sequence?

I think they do 17-18 revolutions altogether. They actually do more than 8 on their first set. They way they exit that first set is incredibly underrated. The Shibs' classic twizzles are pretty underrated already. They don't need to rebalance or change direction. They cover that ice and maintain and don't lose speed continuously just from that initial push.

I think now that the worst that they imagined happened before Pyeongchang, they feel a sort of sense of relief. Now they can just go out there and skate and not worry about maintaining some hierarchal status. I think when that happens it becomes clear that they really are the best U.S. ice dancers.

I saw a screencap of Alex and Maia right before their last footwork sequence at Nationals:

Maia was really bringing it and maybe got ahead of herself on that final section which caused the trip. I do think that was a step in the right direction as they know they really have to bring the speed and dynamism to the performance to get that medal. As for the mistake, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. I believe it'll be seen as a great lesson learned for them in their preparation for Pyeongchang.

yes, I noticed it too, that step seq will be spectacular when we see it clean, it is the end that was needed.

Aah, I was there and remember that moment - the crowd was so with them going into the final step sequence. I think the emotion was probably at its highest. I will say I thought they lost some of that intensity in the step sequence even before the stumble.

Still my favorite US ice dance team! And the criticisms about ice coverage and speed compared to the other US teams did not hold up for me in person, seeing the top 3 skate back to back.

Thank you for your in-person report. I think we can lay to rest that the Shibs are slower or cover less ice than at least the other ice dance teams. It seems like a criticism that won't die (and was created like 4 or so seasons ago).

I hope that Maia wears her new dress for the team event and the other dress for the individual event. I am fine if Alex keeps the new shirt.

I finally noticed the ice breakers in the supermarket and I had to buy them.

Agree about the dress. I think I need that campy poster. I am going to make inquiries. :)

Maia and Alex will be on the TODAY Show on Monday morning.
Looks like during both the 7am-9am main show and also on the 9am-10am Megyn Kelly hour as "Athletes to Watch"

They were on the Today show last fall when the Closing Ceremony outfits were revealed.

Watching Europeans I am surprised to see that Maia and Alex always were so criticized because they were slow and now I am watching perfect scores for teams skating slow, I guess that skating slow was only problem for Maia and Alex. Shibs need to be super precise, fast and with the most ice coverage, well , at this point I should be used to it but I am not :duh:.

I am understanding VGT's past frustration so much this season for exactly this reason. :(

Maia and Alex are doing an "Instagram takeover" for one of their sponsors, TUMI luggage at @TumiTravel. Their Instagram story has been running through the day.

Entertaining segment with Alex as "backpack boy", a montage of their signature "luggage collection photos" from whenever they fly off on a journey, and clever musical accompaniments.

Marina looks like she loves the "Nell Tote" she presumably got as a gift. Lucky coach!
