The Shibutanis Thread 4: Ready for Paradise

The Grandma and Grandpa Shib pic had me

Camden is the junior with the Fix You program who made all those sweet comments about looking up to the Shibs right? Nice to see them in a picture together at the GPF banquet.

What does his comment mean? because it is no longer there . I am the only crazy person who never eliminate unwise comments that I make?.
Thank you for asking this. All I saw was "The offer still stands" and I could NOT figure out what was funny about that, but was embarrassed to ask.

I figured it was a response to Maia calling herself and Alex the oldest members of Team USA at that table and despite that his offer still stood. He deleted it now, so maybe he got embarrassed or he didn't mean to post that.

Oh, I loved their cute perky phase. It was perfect for their age then. Their joy was so contagious.

Oh don't get me wrong, I loved it back then for sure. But I always got a sense that the judges were kinda penalizing them for that after a few seasons. Like they were less mature, you know (even though we know that is far from being the case).

Maybe. I never saw it as immature, though. I always saw it as classic, a throwback to Fred and Ginger's grand ballroom style. And it was so remarkable to see it done so beautifully and authentically by such young skaters. I fell in love with them right there and then.

Yes! I watched their Worlds 2011 FD the other day and it reminded me how I started ubering for them....so light, so joyful. In hindsight, it should have not been that much of a surprise they managed to sneak on the podium.

I guess my viewpoint is colored by their struggles in the years that followed.

Looking at the flashback photo, though it may just be how he's standing, but it seems Alex also grew a bit as well.

I noticed that Maia’s latest tweet in Japanese got nearly two thousand likes. Love that people are showing their love and support right now. I hope they know they have way more supporters and fans than not.

tweets in Japanese almost always get many likes, Japanese people appreciate the effort to write in their language, but look at how many likes Maia got just showing her skating https://twitter.com/MaiaShibutani/status/940143290027872256. And this time she did not have the help of her beautiful hair down .

Sorry that I'm late to the game with the GPF but I only just watched their performance. Not anywhere near their best for sure but I was glad they managed to hold on to the bronze, thereby holding their position as the #1 U.S team (for now anyways). And who knows, maybe it could motivate them to skate even better for both Nationals and the Olympics. I hope they continue to improve.

I do think what's even more evident in the above montage is that despite what some may think about "Paradise" or their choice to do a trilogy, their skating has really improved since 2015-2016 which was already a big improvement from the skaters that they were prior.

I also think "Evolution" really lent itself well to montage form. There are a lot of little moments and movements in that program that a great video editor could really exploit.

I think what I got out of it seeing it like that is that Fix You really had a lot of big bombastic moments that drew people in. Evolution's movements were much more subtle, but their overall dancing in that program was better. I feel like Paradise is an attempt to blend those two, I think the dancing and holds are great, but it's really integrating some of those big moments/bombastic images that I think is needed for the program to work.

What I love about this video is it really shows the absolute pristine quality of the Shibs' skating. Even when set to a different piece of music, you can see just how beautiful and finished their movements are. Their bodies are in perfect harmony. Great job, sam sk-wantch for putting this together. It is very impressive.

I also like how the video really drives home the fact that these are indeed three very different programs. To those trying to say Paradise is a copy of their previous free dances.
That's funny. For me it cements the unity of the three programs.

I love the montage. Thanks, Mrs P! I just wish the music were not so downbeat.

I also like their less is more approach. It works well for them and highlights their good skating skills.

I'm sort of reminded (just a little bit as there are major differences of course) of Klimova & Ponomarenko back in the 80s. Although sometimes K&P's less is more approach could make them look kind of 'small' relative to some of the other couples like B&B and D&D, there was still a beauty to the skating that was really captivating.

It's funny that you would say that gk891, I am a long-time fan of K/P for precisely those reasons. I liked D/D, but he was a far better skater than she, whereas K/P were equally strong. B/B never appealed to me and are my least favorite World/Olympic ice dance team ever. They were so over the top and did not have the skating skills to match their uber dramas on ice.
