The Shibutanis Thread 4: Ready for Paradise

A loving Xmas present to #ShibSquad fans. Incredible turnout, the place literally looks packed to the rafters, including with fans who came specifically to see them perform, including one who drove 4 hours!

It was so nice seeing the Shibs in their element with their fans. I’d like to think this is a small sample of what they’ll be experiencing in Pyeongchang, especially Alex. ;)

#USChamps18: On call, @ShibSibs said they have changed the straightline lift in their FD at the Grand Prix Final, in order to max out points (GOEs). Alex: "It's nothing unusual, every year each element has stages & progression." 1/2

Since winning bronze at Grand Prix Final, they have gotten feedback from tech specialists and "done a lot of work" on their programs, but "it's nothing out of the ordinary....We are confident & continuing in the direction we have set for ourselves."

I'm actually very happy he's joking about it. It shows he's not dwelling about it or making it bigger than it is. The Shibs have shown themselves to be the most reliable, resilient competitors of the ice dance field and I think this attitude is an illustration of that. I've gone from seriously worrying about the Shibs to thinking no matter what happens at Nationals, things will really turn out great for them.

And the thing is that the twizzles were not really the problem, but the step sequences. I am a little sad about the lift, but they consulted to specialists, so I hope it works. Maybe we'll see that lift again after this season, like their rotational lift.

Maybe their new lift will be even better. We just have to hope and see. As for the step sequences, they improved the second one at SA (though it was still level 3 it had so much more character and clarity and power) but their nerves uncharacteristically got the better of them at GPF. Let's hope they got some real useful, enthusiastic, and good-intentioned feedback from the judges at the GPF and we'll see something great. The last time they had about a month between competitions, we saw how energized they were. Let's hope for it happen three more times this season. ;).

wow, their year was so productive, they will have many stories to tell to their grandchildren.

Oh my gosh, they are right there on top! And top ten of what's in! That is fantastic!! Is @chapis Jessica Contrera??? Can we get that graphic for an FSU emoji??

how little you know me, I would put them on the top of the list, plus I would write a whole article exclusively about them :fan21:.

Damn, US Nationals are the next weekend, I thought there were two weeks left. I planned a getaway weekend and now I am thinking about cancel it :wall:.

By the way, did you watch that junior ladies short program is Dec 31 at 8:55pm? why are they so mean?

Short dance is Jan 5, friday, 1:10pm Pacific time
Free dance Jan 7, sunday, 12:30pm (closing event :cheer2:)

Great, they will have 48h between short and free dance.

Lynn Rutherford's article on the ice dance competition at Nationals with some quotes from the Shibs:

“(2016) was a breakthrough for us — we put ourselves out there and were vulnerable,” Alex said. “Every path we took, every fork in the road, we made a decision that took us to where we are now. Part one was “Fix You” and us being sort of symbolically broken and fixing ourselves. Part two last season was “Evolution,” sort of the transition period to the closing chapter of a trilogy.”

“If it weren’t for all of the experiences we’ve had, we wouldn’t be as connected to (this season’s) free dance,” Maia says. “We never stopped believing in ourselves, and we are lucky we had a core group of people that continue to support us and help us grow.”

Maia and Alex have been such excellent ambassadors for the sport, and their vlogs and behind the scenes videos are just what skating fans have been waiting for. There's not enough skating on TV anymore, and they have filled that void with real life, up close experiences shared around the world. I love watching their youtube channel while at the gym; it makes the time go by that much faster. No time or ability to visit LA, Europe, or Asia? Well, just watch one of the Shibsibs videos! I don't see how they have time to do so much while also being at the top of their game, but I thank them for all their hard work in different facets of life!

Here's to a beautiful threpeat as National Champs and showing themselves unbeatable in both the short and the free! They are as ready as can be. It feels like their whole life has been building for this moment (moment meaning Nats through Worlds). May it be theirs and golden! Go, Maia and Alex!

The other night I had a dream that I was watching the Nationals short programs and I specifically remember that the Shibs won the SD with a score of 83. The ladies SP was a mess though with the top 3 being complete unknowns LOL. If this dream is an omen I don’t mind sacrificing the ladies for the Shibs to win :p

Ah, there I can't agree with you (**MIRAI!!!***) but I will sacrifice pairs if that helps Maia and Alex.

Haha fair enough :). Here’s to hoping that no sacrifices are necessary. I can’t really sacrifice pairs because I’m not actually invested in US pairs so it doesn’t count as a sacrifice lol

Haha, that's true of me as well. It was not a real sacrifice. And I'm not sacrificing Nathan for anyone so... Maia and Alex will do it themselves. With confidence, beauty and panache!
