The Shibutanis Thread 4: Ready for Paradise

I was thinking C/B are a legitimate threat to H/D’s upward momentum now too. They’ve finally hit their stride and will only get better. H/D might not be able to pass them so easily after all.
I would believe this more if Madison changed her costumes!

The dripping one!

I agree that costume is kind of terrible. I actually like the color but the design ruins it. The placement of the fringe is really unfortunate.

How a designer managed to create such an unflattering dress for such a beautiful person, I can’t “imagine:drama: :p

They're both awful. Such a beautiful girl with such a bizarre taste in costumes. She is too tiny to go Pogo!

You are right, it is possible. FSU is not the judging panel, for better or worse. Better, I think! Sheesh, am I the only one who can't get Blades of Glory out of my head these days?

Coming back to my idea of the storytelling opening, I think it could also demonstrate their relationship very effectively and WHY the "she" of the lyrics so easily becomes the "they" of the program. Alex doesn't just join in Maia's dream, he does it in that protective, supportive, admiring, brotherly way he always has with her.

Blades of Glory? the movie? I love that movie. About the storytelling that could work, Tessa and Scott start apart and it works well in my opinion.

BoG was already in my head because of the ice dance drama, and then when I saw Adam defending his real butt in the TSL twitter feed I lost it!

I have a yen to write to Maia and Alex with this idea but... it's not my place. At all!!!

It is that I suppose that the meaning it has for them is also important, although we can not see it clearly, if for them it has a personal meaning, the emotion is more real and helps them with their expression. Maybe they want to start the pose together because, after all, they were always together since Maia was born, they were always very close even before they skate together.

No doubt, but they can't get so lost in their personal meaning that they forget to explain it to the audience. Storytelling 101. It wouldn't matter if they had gone without lyrics, but since those provide the outline of a story, it's up to them to sell it.

There is always SA to show they don't need it -- but they always have to keep improving. It's not like other teams will be standing still until Nats and the Olympics.

Huh, I agree with both of you guys, chapis and Spun Silver. The personal meaning is really important and will help them project their performance outwards (like we saw at SA), but making things as clear as possible to audience as well could take this program to the next level. Keep in mind that they didn't have any time at all to make significant changes between SA and the final. The last time they had a month off between competitions they definitely put it to good use.

This! From the opening pose with his hand on her shoulder to the ending where she rests her head on his shoulder in the flying spin movement, the dance is a love story. Some people have a hard time with the idea siblings can have such a close, caring and mutually admiring relationship and actually want to work together to reach the top of a difficult (and subjective) sport. I admire Alex and Maia for breaking through so many stereotypes with their success. We who know their story and have been following them for years, enjoy the little references to past programs and understand their goal is higher than the Olympic Bronze Medal. To the general public, it's a dance with beautiful movement, outstanding twizzles, excellent dance posture and pulsating modern music that moves the audience to stand with it's perfection It is not PC's style, it is not VM's style, it is Shibutani style and I love it.

Er, the storytelling is part of the FD problem. Making it more scripted isn't going to help.

The shibs get dinged for re-using Coldplay the same way PC get dinged for bringing out similar styles. PC rely on visual images though not behind the scenes storytelling - so it works better. Ice dance is visual not textual.

I remember people saying that they added music from Evolution to their FD, but I could not identify it :shuffle:, someone could tell me, where is that part?

Did you guys got to watch the American coverage ? All I got from youtube was a mini-video with 10 seconds of the last part of P/C FD to say they won and nothing else ? Did they broadcast it at least ?

Madison designs all her own costumes. :shuffle:

There are not many notes. In the transition following the first step sequence you hear a few bars of "Fly On" , followed by a few bars from "Fix You" and the line "Stuck in Reverse", then a few bars from Evolution which end just before the spin. Anyone else?

Camden Pulkinen left a funny comment on Maia’s latest IG post. Love that Maia and Alex are now playing the elders.

I noticed that Maia’s latest tweet in Japanese got nearly two thousand likes. Love that people are showing their love and support right now. I hope they know they have way more supporters and fans than not.

@Mrs. P , we posted at that at nearly same time.
