The Shibutanis Thread 4: Ready for Paradise

I thouroughly enjoyed both Shibs’ programs and really don’t see how they could have gotten off to a better start. I agree with Charlie White the FD could use more abandon and they’ll surely get there. I absolutely see them medalling at the Olympics (gold?) then off to DWTS for which they were practically born to do.

Unfortunately, I think DWTS is doing a juniors version this winter.

Carol Lane and Kurt Browning's commentary on the Shibs' FD:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBkqgwWRrAo

They had a lot of complimentary things to say about it and Lane explains the more technical things the Shibs are doing. Be prepared for some snark about the judging in Russia, but I think she was fresh from feeling what Piper Gilles was feeling.

ETA: the third commentator said this is their third year straight skating to Coldplay, and that's not right. That needs to be nipped in the bud before it becomes one of those "truths" about the Shibs that posters latch on to no matter how true/untrue it is.

ETA: I didn't see that @Sylvia had already posted the CBC link. I apologize for reposting it without acknowledging you had already posted it.

Kurt mentioned the risk of injury with the kneeling spin at the end. I was hoping she had some sort of knee pad on! But I didnt see one.

I noticed that right away too. Overall though they were very complimentary. I have watched the FD a few times now and I really love it. I think it could create that great moment for them, like Fix You did.

Yeah, this program is definitely a grower. I like it more and more, although I think they could tweak it a little and make it even better.

I remember last season I didn’t fall in love with V/M’s SD until GPF or P/C’s FD until worlds. It’s ok for it to take time for programs to fully click. When other teams don’t have perfect programs at their first competitive outings it’s fine because people know they’re going to tweak and improve over the season. But when the same is true for the Shibs they’re somehow a failure? I don’t get this double standard.

Yeah, ice dance can get very nasty among fans. I like replying to them and breaking down why B&K had no business being anywhere near G&P.

I had the most fun on FSW discussing dance and why Grishuk & Platov deserved to win in 1998. At first it seemed like there was a clear anti-G&P majority opinion; but the longer we talked, the more we learned & the more posters joined the discussion with different viewpoints and different expertise. It was great!

I was just looking at the ice dance matchups in the rest of the GPs, except France which isnt posted on FSU yet. It looks to me like Maia and Alex have an excellent chance at another gold at [Skate America], whereas it seems C/B and H/D will have tougher fields all the way. Has this already been discussed? What do you make of it?

USFSA is playing the game very wisely, IMO.

The federation had no control over any of the assignments except SA. They went with the National Champions, which is the norm. (We all know USFSA wouldn't have chosen Rostelecom for the Shibs. It was a tough draw, and they faced down the challenge).

But USFSA could have taken two top teams at SA, and they didn't. They allowed the teams to be split. I think it is very wise. All three U.S. teams have already proven themselves to be contenders. This season they are going out into the international field and establishing themselves with their new programs first.

Better for all three teams, IMO. No one will be stuck behind anyone else on the national scene. No one will be undermining any of our other teams. All three teams are capable of facing this challenge. They may miss out, but they also all have a very good chance of making the Final and making a statement for themselves beforehand.

In addition, we had a slew of young U.S. dance teams that deserve two spots on the GP this season. As it is, McNamara & Carpenter don't have a second. If USFSA had invited two top teams to SA, someone else might also have missed out. The current scenario allows for maximum success for the maximum number of teams.

Hubbell & Donohue have a very tough draw ahead of them at SC, but they are primed for the opportunity. If they upset there for a top two placement, it will be a much stronger statement for them than if they finished second at SA. (Personally, I'm rooting for Weaver & Poje; but I really like both teams. I've just loved Weaver & Poje a bit longer). Even if H&D finish third at SC, they have an excellent shot against Cappellini & Lanotte in neutral territory at NHK. Chock & Bates have as good a shot against Bobrova & Soloviev and Weaver & Poje in China and France as the reverse.

I went to the U. S. Ice Dance thread assuming I would fine lots of kudos for their performances. VIETgrlTerifa--you're the only one I could find that commented so I can see why you're so disappointed.

LOL. I went on the Rostelecom FD thread, the Dance Hall, and here. We have a plethora of ice dance threads to post in this season! I guess I skipped the U.S. Ice Dance thread because everyone there has probably already seen my "Kudos, Shibs" post somewhere else. And we all know the Shibs have lots of support among U.S. dance fans. If you do not know this, you should have heard the live crowd in Boston. I think all three U.S. dance teams have a lot of love among U.S. audiences. It varies by location and, of course, the programs the teams present; but U.S. figure skating fans have a lot of reason to be proud of these teams. When they skate well, we'll stand up. No matter which team it is.

As gk_891 said, ice dance can get very combative on the forums. I think many fans like having the option of having a relatively safe fan-thread zone in which to post. If any of you were like me, you were plenty nervous about Rostelecom. And when you feel that way, sometimes it's just better to watch the competition and enjoy your own first impressions without worrying about others' reactions. I often read and post more in the play-by-play threads of competitions in which I am not emotionally invested. One of the great ironies of being a skating fan.

I am worried about it too. Watching it several times I noticed that it looks like she barely touch the ice https://youtu.be/TjuDkzBvHKA?t=275 but Alex has to be very careful about that element, because if he does not put her on the ice with enough care, she hits the ice directly with her knee, omg! :( :fragile:

Same here! And it's one thing to say that someone is just stating your opinion based on their biases but it's another thing to bring up technical reasons as to why this team skated better than that team (e.g. Krylova skating her back crosrolls in the Argentine Tango CD on back inside edges as opposed to back outside edges, Kraatz keeping his free foot on the ice before his counter also in the Argentine Tango CD, how Bourne's twizzle was skated incorrectly on two feet and it also was skated out of a left forward outside edge that went completely flat for her, skating hand to hand or side by side vs. skating from within complex handholds, etc.)

I have done the same with all of my favourite teams over the years. Sometimes it can be souring to see 'fans' crapping all over skaters, not because of their skating but for either personal reasons or personal preferences.

‘Trilogy’ debut earns gold for Shibutanis at Rostelecom,
Golden Skate article.

We really love this program (SD), the music is so dynamic and fun,” his sister, Maia, added. “The Latin rhythms I think will be really entertaining for the audience, and we really changed ourselves with our choreography this year.”

Alex elaborated. “We are proud of the whole concept (FD), the thought that went into it, and how we will continue to develop and build onto it so that it’s a really strong program in time for the Olympic Games.”

“I think that we have shown in the past year the ability to compete with all the teams and be competitive with everyone,” said Alex. “We are really confident in our own ability to perform when it really matters in competition, which is really important especially when there is a lot of pressure at the Olympics. We are just focusing on ourselves and we are confident in the direction we are going in, that it is the right direction. I think the results last year were a good indication of that too¨ . THIS SO MUCH

It looks like the Shibs are still in Russia. Nikita Nazarov and others posted photos of practicing with the Shibs at Balashikha Arena in Balashikha, Russia. I think Balashikha is in Moscow.

But what are they doing there? maybe working with a russian coach/choreographer?. Peter T. perhaps

On a side note, I notice the Shibs have quite a few Russian fans. I was looking at the comments from Maia's recent IG photo and a lot of them are Russian.

Trankov/Volosozhar think very highly of them (and were the ones that motivated them to keep going) so I wonder if they got a lot of fans through that?

Also I stumbled on this -- it's beautiful fan art: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ball-QODclx/?taken-by=alissask8eredits

I wonder if they were chosen to be speakers or if multiple skaters were invited to speak. I know at 2016 4CC, Maia and Alex were chosen to be the closing banquet speakers.

Probably they were chosen, o maybe they ask them previosuly to all the top skaters who wanted to give the speech and Maia and Alex volunteered, they seem very proactive.
I know for sure that Ekaterina B. HATES public speeches.

I was thinking about this last night. I'm not one for literal voice overs in a program, but since they're using a bit of Coldplay's "O"/"Fly On" with "Fix You" during their "stuck in reverse" lift, it may be awesome if they added the lyric "fly on" either before their stationary lift or right before their twizzles.

I sort of think maybe they should start off with the straightline lift and thus start with that "O/Fly On" and "Fix You" Easter egg before they go into "Paradise". I know they're going for a sort of emotional throwback (like Maia reminiscing the hard times) but I think it breaks up the build and thus impact that they can have before the twizzles. I also don't know if if I like the way the program starts with the spin and then the CiSt (although that circle was huge) as I don't think it's as attention grabbing as it could be. I think starting off with that complicated and yet perfectly executed with brilliant flow straightline lift is a way to get the audience's attention right from the start. Starting off with the spin isn't that eye-catching. This will also solve the composition issue I have with them having two lifts in a row.

I think the first part is about Maia dreaming and then Alex joining her and some of their early success. I think struggles/slow section is probably supposed to represent an interruption before they transition to going toward paradise in part 3.

I agree the spin isn't the best way to start it .... though I can see why they did it. It's actually a way to show they're in it on their journey.

I think part of the problem with the spin is that it's a recycled element -- all three FDs had this same spin. They started Evolution with that same element. It could be a complete throwback to Evolution by starting with the spin but it gives the perception that the whole program is recycled.

This is the challenge of the program itself -- it's in essence a dance that references the other two FD with Paradise as the fresh element. However, they haven't fully channelled the new emotional power (you see shades of it but it's not full blown yet) from Paradise yet -- so right now, to some of the critics, it looks like they just mashed the dances together, hence all the criticisms of re-tread.
