I'm trying to think of the last time we had a waltz? Was it the 2015/2016 season? Three of the top 4 would have skated a waltz that season.

The last time that we had the waltz, Gilles & Poirier skated to the Beatles and Chock & Bates tried to skate to Dark Eyes.

Wasn't G&P's Waltz RD asked by the ISU to be adapted into a potential CD?

Polka wouldn't be my first choice but I'd be fine with it in conjunction with another ballroom rhythm as in the 2003(?) "Grand Ball" theme. A program like the DenStavs' Baroque one would be awesome.
It is amazing that everyone who was around 22 years ago remembers that OD for good reasons. (We all remember DomShab’s Vancouver OD for other reasons.)

I’d be happy with a waltz or foxtrot or even a swing rhythm. Polka, NO.

Wasn't that the "march" part of that program?

A couple of weeks ago in my Bollywood workout class the teacher did a Bollywood song with a swing rhythm. There's potentially all kinds of cool music that would work with more traditional ballroom themes?

G&P applied. I recall there was a process by which teams were supposed to apply. I assume the teams used the second rhythm for the application. I googled, and G&P's pattern was named The Maple Leaf March and Kaliszek & Spodyriev's was the Tea Time Foxtrot.

I'm pretty sure the actual patterns in 2016 were to the Ravensburger Waltz.

Although, to be honest, I’m not sure what theme they think would avoid issues with rights.
Me either. The more I've read up on the music rights issue, it's twofold - first is the song copyright which applies to the musical composition, second is the sound recording copyright which applies to the performance. The recording copyright is going to be a problem regardless of whether the song copyright has expired and the composition itself is in the public domain. And, in the US, Congress has extended the recording copyright to at least 100 years from the date of publication, so good luck finding a quality music recording that is already in the public domain.

Wikipedia gives a good overview of the matter - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_in_the_United_States#Sound_recordings

And that's just in the US - it varies from country to country. It's such a complex issue.

I think Guignard/Fabbri would do a splendid waltz. My favorite Polka was Delobel/Schoenfelder's Wild West version.

Virtue/Moir did a program using an old, scratchy-type recording in one of their programs, but I don't know if it was as old as the mid-1920's. I loved that program.
The year they did their Latin FD, that SD is a classic.

There was a rumor a few years back that ISU wanted to introduce the Maple Leaf March into juniors, but I think COVID derailed the whole process. And I have a vague memory that they won’t use it as the Senior pattern in the RD until Gilles/Poirier retire due to conflict of interest.

Speaking of, wasn’t it the 2020/2021 season where the initial plan was a “folk” rhythm with Yankee Polka pattern, but because of COVID they decided to repeat the 2019/2020 RD (musicals/Finnstep)? I suppose they could resurrect that idea, although we all know the dangers of Folk as a theme at the Olympics…

What about an Opera themed RD with a Waltz pattern? Olympics are in Italy, so this would be a good fit. Besides, we already had a Musical RD, this would only be fair.

I think that's just about the best retirement announcement I've ever read. He's a very good writer, and it comes across as truly sincere.
