Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

They are talking about the back flip onto the shoulders (the one the football players attempted at Super Bowl).

“The risque — and athletically impressive — lift saw Virtue stick a toe pick in the ice to propel herself up backwards so that she landed straddling Moir's shoulders, her hands clasping the back of his head.”

I’d always thought it was perfect for MR and Carmen. As Scott says, it was kind of suggestive.... It fits in a program where passion is a theme in the story.

I don’t know..to me the article reads that they’ve changed it after nationals. I loved that lift. . I don’t understand why they’re changing things so close to the Olympics unless someone told them too. They’ve been performing that lift and maxing our GOE’s on it all season and now they think it doesn’t fit their vision? I def think someone suggested them to do it.

ETA: Honestly at this point they should skate the programs they want to skate and not worry about the medal. I feel like they’re chasing something they’ll never be able to reach when in reality they already have.

Lori Ewing also suggested they'd on Twitter that they'd changed their spin too, and I have absolutely no idea why they'd need to do that. I thought its placement at Nationals went perfectly with the music, and the positions were gorgeous.

Well that I can understand, because if you read the score sheets, the GOEs aren't as high as some other teams. Something I've noticed at least twice during the GP series - losing 0.5 GOE for example is too much. So that is a good advice.
I don't think they'll change the exit they did at nationals though, because I really like it.

And for the lift I think that won't be too much of a change - adapting to the "very" international audience. Maybe they've been told to do so ?

And it didn't look good either.

I wish this sport would just leave the politics at the door and just let these skaters skate smh.

Why? Do you think that Didier alerted to the panel to consider a possible deduction for that lift? Is it because of the jump she makes?

This sport is so frustrating. See, I really admire the fire in them this time round in refusing to settle for being anointed the second best team (because they're not the second best team). I feel like Tessa and Scott 2.0 would've done the unthinkable and left Marina pre-Sochi. But if it's not going to happen, no matter what they do or whoever they try to please, I want them to go out like them. And they clearly love that lift, they've done it so many times since they competed Carmen. I'm not buying their 'we didn't think it was beautiful enough' line for a second.

I need to go check the score sheets! It would make sense. Off the top of my head I'm not sure why their GOE wouldn't stack up on that spin. I just hope they haven't sacrificed musicality in the process.

IIRC, maybe go check NHK, the highest score for a spin is 7.40 and they left almost 0.5 points. But then we can't see everything in real life (speed and all).
It's a good decision if it helps them maximize points.

I highly doubt this has anything to do with anything other than believing they needed to change the aesthetic appeal of the lift. I personally loved it the way it was. And it gets a huge audience response. But here's the thing......I trust them completely.

Ok so...I think they didn't change the spin, it was a mistaken report. She intended the lift. I know they were losing points on the spin during the season but spins are not their best element, so changing it for a new one 2 weeks before the olys wouldn't have been a good choice. Also at nats the spin looked much more centered than usual so I don't see them changing it. For the lift I think they heard through the grapevine that they could get if not a deduction maybe lower PCS (because of the indecency?lol). well it smells politics...why tell them just before the olys?

Well, there is really nothing wrong with the spin as it is. It's just that (and please don't yell at me!!!) P/C's spin is spectacular and so I can understand this decision if they can get more speed out of it. They have both said that the spin is their least favourite element, lol.

I looked at Ewing's twitter and she said she made a mistake and meant to say lift. I doubt they've changed the spin. It will be interesting to see the new lift.

This happened to them at the OG in Vancouver with the Goose. They were advised last minute that the original exit out of the Goose may be "illegal" and they changed it to be safe. And won. These tweaks make me nervous, but they are playing the game. All will be well.

Didn't it also happen with their Farrucas lift at Worlds 2010? After they won an Olympic gold medal with it?

I was going to be a nervous wreck watching this before all this but now? I might not make it. I hope it’s a minimal change and it doesn’t then to think too much during it. I really did think the old lift was perfect and transitioned the story incredibly well. Sigh.

This makes far more sense. I was so confused when I read it was the spin. I've followed V/M since they were teenagers and if there's one element they're not going to touch days before a competition, it's a tricksy spin...

Not worried. Remember when they changed their last lift at the last minute at world 2010 after they heard through the grapevine if might not be given full marks? They skated their best SD ever until then and scored a world record.

This sounds more like they tweaked it back in Montreal with their choreographers and some reporters watching their first practice noticed and asked them about it.

I wonder if this is the lift they’ve put in. Has a difference entry with her not picking.
