Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

They have already confirmed they are skating both segments in the Team Event. Here is the question they were asked about their schedule in SK. I take this as confirmation. Do you guys agree with me?

I agree with you. Scott said at the airport today they didn’t know yet, but I think he was bluffing. I just don’t see how Tessa and Scott don’t skate both programs if Canada wants gold. In the beginning of the season I had really hoped WP would be given a shot, but after the trajectory of their season, I realized it wouldn’t happen (or shouldn’t in fact) for Canada to have a good shot in the team event.

Are they allowed to skate both programs in the team competition?

I can’t believe the Olympics are here! I read that the awful Noriflu (so) has hit 1/2 the security guards let’s hope all the athletes don’t get exposed. I had it once and it took me out for a week.

:eek::(

1200 volunteers affected thus far.......

Scott being coy......imagine that, lol.

1200 volunteers? holy crap. officials should hand out masks to athletes to use outside of competition. now that I know this knowledge I have seen a bunch of athletes walking around the Olympic village or practicing in the facilities without any masks or form of protection on social media and I am now quite worried. I don't want any more people to get sick especially Tessa and Scott.

The endurance athletes have is truly amazing.

I know! I remember Savard-Gagnon/Braden stopping and looking like they were about to withdraw then somehow getting through it. Adrenaline and endurance. I hope no one gets sick at these Olympics

1200 people? That’s insane. I hope athletes will be ok especially VM who are already going to be in the cold (these Olympics apparently are breaking the record for the coldest one yet) for hours for the flag bearing duties. I’m currently getting over a flu myself we have a real nasty strain in the States right now. I hope no athlete has to deal with anything like that.
I was shocked at that number! This is definitely a concern for all. Yet another reason to cross our fingers for Tess and Scott. Are we going to make it through @Shayii? LOL LOL

Lol I have no idea! I honestly don’t remember being this stressed during Sochi. They’ll be fine and so will we. I plan on watching the team events live, depending on how those go I might skip the individuals lol.

Masks aren't going to do anything for Norovirus; it's not an airborne disease.

The athletes need to be very good about thorough hand washing after going to the bathroom and before eating. Be wary of food prepared by someone else (go for packaged items or thoroughly wash your own veggies/fruits).

Yes. It was a nasty flu that effected many athletes including Elvis Stojko, Yagudin, Savard-Gagnon/Bradet and many others.

I don’t think Elvis had the flu but he had that horrific groin injury. His skating was never the same after that although I know he retired.

Oh! thanks for the clarification. I thought It was airborne. I read in the CBC article that shayii linked that Olympic officials are distributing hand sanitizer to the athletes which I guess will be decent virus repel.

Whenever you have a bunch of people from around the world staying in close quarters, you are going to have fast spreading of infections. I'm sure Team Canada has warned their athletes about hand washing and best practices to avoid contagion. This isn't V/M's first world meet - pretty sure they'll do what they have to do.

Scott is maybe being coy because ultimately, he won't be the one deciding the team event strategy.

Ok I actually hadn’t read the article on the norovirus before commenting, but now that I have it’s not 1200 people that contracted the virus. Only 41 individuals and they’ve been treated at the hospital. Still, I’m sure precautions are being taken.

Also while we’re all speculating who will be chosen for the team event, there has been no official confirmation from Canada or from any country yet (apart from Italy I believe).

Unfortunately, hand sanitizers are largely ineffective againts Norovirus. Your best method of protection is good hand washing with soap and water. Hopefully, that message is transmitted to V&M!!! We need them in tip top shape for their skates.

I'm sure Team Canada has debriefed all their athletes on the virus and the steps they can take to minimize the risk...I hope all the athletes are healthy for all their events! It's so nice seeing such a warm welcome for V/M at the airport...I hope they get a lot of crowd support during their SD and FD.

I heard on Tumblr that P/C might be skipping their team event...now I'm extremely nervous that V/M are participating. On one hand, I feel like they need it to showcase their material and on the other, if they make mistakes there's no coming back. I don't know how I'm going to manage to watch this live....my heart rate is going to soar.

I tried to watch the video of V/M on CBC from across the border using VPN, but got "We are currently experiencing technical difficulties." For those who have watched it, is it the same one that was shown in French last week?

Yeah pretty much there are a few differences but nothing major. I used HOLA to watch and it worked for me.

Thanks. Was finally able to get it to work. It's interesting that there was more dancing on the floor shown in this version, and they re-filmed the French-speaking parts in English. It's so nice to see how supportive MF & Patrice are of them in choosing MR, even though it would not have been their choice for V/M. I wish there was footage of the re-working of the free dance (and even the short dance for that matter) after the GPF.

They look sharp!

According to Jackie P/C didn't practice with the team today and therefore the reports that they're not doing the short after all have truth to them. Didn't they confirm in an interview they would skate? Looks like a very last minute decision in that case. I suspect this strategy is to do with not overwhelming them at their first Olys, but honestly I think this is potentially a great thing for V/M. Just because of optics- it could look like they're running. Put down a good SD and V/M get to close the whole competition in the free. Skate two excellent programs and get the crowd behind them without having to share the dance spotlight and they could effectively erase the last season and give them a clean slate going into the individual. I'm sure someone could point out a downside, but I definitely feel that this could be good for them overall.

Huh, that's odd. They've never expressed doubts over that lift before and they've been maxing out GOE on it. They talk about minimising possible deductions- I'm wondering if something has been said behind the scenes? I just don't see them suddenly thinking that the lift no longer fit their artistic vision 2 weeks out from the Olympics. I hope the entry is still the same at least, it's mighty impressive and something only Tessa is doing on the ice.
