Suspect in Committing Idaho Murders Caught

Essentially law enforcement is, increasingly, submitting their DNA results to these public companies like 23andMe, etc, to see if they can find a match - if not an exact match then a close familial match - you know in the commercials when they say "oh, here's a new leaf on your family tree..." If a match or a close family match (sibling, parent, niece/nephew, first cousin) comes up then that significantly narrows the field of suspects from thousands to hundreds or even tens.

Here is an article about how it worked to find the Golden State Killer that @Amy L referenced -

I know that in Canada prior to Covid that people in Canada were buying these DNA type of kits. Do their thing, wait x amount of time and they’d find out their bloodlines eg, Irish etc. I rolled my eyes at the time. Gimmick? Fun? nobody has my DNA although they’re welcome to it. I think it’s a great idea though. They may not have caught him otherwise.

It’s such a chilling 🤢 case though. They were so young 😔.

I understand he is acting out in jail by yelling at guards and exposing himself to inmates. Maybe he has a death wish??

That turned out to be false. I caught that last night from Chris Cuoma who is with News Nation now I guess.

Playing the Devils Advocate-

Could there be a mistake?

His father says he noticed nothing unusual in his behavior while they drove back to PA.

Could there be another individual involved in this, and may be he did the killings?

Could there be a psychological issue, like he cannot remember doing this?

Needless to say this crime is beyond heinous. Whoever did this must be punished.

I think he needs the opportunity to defend himself in the court. Many people are already saying he did it, but according to our laws he is innocent until proven guilty.

He’s in Idaho court now so info will be released after it’s done as far as the reasons for arresting.

It appears that Kohberger's DNA was identified based on his father's DNA, using the same analytical processes employed by Para

The affidavit says DNA was taken off the button snap of a tan leather knife sheath that was found on the bed next to one of the victims. The DNA, investigators said, was linked to Bryan Kohberger through a comparison with his father’s DNA.

The man who killed Christine Jessop in Canada was discovered many years after her murder by using genealogy DNA. Sadly he was deceased.

But I think it’s fascinating and fantastic that this exists as many murders go unsolved.

One of the surviving roommates saw the killer as he was exiting the house. Did anyone know that info before? That is fkin terrifying.
911 was not called until hours later though, highly suspicious. Especially since he asked if anyone else was charged. Definitely raises more questions.

Yes! But at least the family finally had an answer.

I wonder if there was something in the house that made the roommate initially scared to called 911 (like illegal substances)? Didn't the first 911 call mention an unconscious person, what if it was this roommate who was passed out from something? Because the four victims probably would have been so bloody you'd think they'd be described in a way other than just unconscious.

The affidavit is  Poor kids. And the responding officers - - this is a small town, I don't think training for this stuff in theory could prepare for something like this. at all.

I I had read that the police were shaken up when it happened. These kids were so young 😔.

I guess we won’t know too much more until a preliminary hearing happens. I’m not sure how quickly those things happen in the U.S. Canada’s court system is slow.

That is possible but this roommate is a pretty horrible person if that is why. I would imagine the suspect had blood on him, any decent person would call 911 to save lives damn the consequences of illegal substances. Although it is possible they were on something and not thinking clearly.

I definitely want more details about this aspect as it is all just bizarre. I try not to think about the rest as it would be an absolutely horrific way to die and horrific scene to respond to.

I’m positive there is a reason and we’ll only know once that is heard. How long does a preliminary hearing get set in the U.S.?

i was pretty young with the OJ trial which was a disaster. But the trial started not that long after the murder too.

In Canada it’s at least two years for a murder trial. Unless they plead guilty that is likely faster.

It was also dark and he was dressed in dark clothing. I wouldn't think that the roommate necessarily recognized there was blood on his clothing or even processed that reality until well after the fact.

We can't even pretend to know how we would have responded in that situation and it's pretty horrible of any of us to judge the roommate for what she did or didn't do. She deserves our compassion and sympathy. I cannot imagine what torment she has endured over the last 8 weeks, wondering if she could have saved her roommates if she'd done something differently. That's a pain I wouldn't wish on anyone.

I would give the roommate the benefit of the doubt. It was probably dark, so he/she couldn't see anything. May be too scared or shocked to think straight. It was not clear to me if this person was aware of what had happened, or if he/she did, was too terrified to do anything.

This guy on cnn makes important points.

The suspect dumped trash at 4am in his neighbor's trash can. That's where they found the DNA. There was a surveillance team watching him from a distance.

This may not be Kohberg's first offense. The guest on cnn said most serial killers don't start with such a big thing. So the PA officials are looking at unsolved murders in PA.

One thing that had struck me even earlier- why did he go to school in Idaho for his PhD and not at some of the renowned schools in PA? Could it have been to escape any possibility of being caught in PA for his earlier offenses (if that was the case)? I don't know if UI has a better Criminology department. It just seems odd that he went to Idaho. I could understand if he went to something like Stanford or Berkeley.

Could he be a Psycho? Like he kills people without a reason?

So many questions. It must be so hard for the families of the four victims to deal with what happened to their loved ones!

You misunderstand... The police retrieved trash from his parents residence at 4am - basically trying to remain undetected by the suspect or his family while they processed the trash for the DNA material they needed to positively identify the suspect.

He didn't go to Idaho for his PhD - he was studying at Washington State University, which is located in Pullman WA, about 10 miles from Moscow ID where the University of Idaho is located. WSU is not some minor university, but a member of the Pac-12, just like Cal-Berkeley and Stanford, and one of the leading universities in the Intermountain region, though Pullman is a small town.

While that is pretty common to do in cases like this, he is not, as of now, a serial killer. He is a mass killer, so that may have something to do with why people aren't talking about it a whole lot.

 A lot of people leave their home state for school for all kinds of reasons.

I know that, but in this context it could be a piece of the puzzle, particularly if he did commit some crimes in his home state. Normally no one would question going to a school that is far away.

For a PHD criminology student he seems to have left a pretty obvious set of tracks. DNA, witnesses, car, disposal of clothes, repeated visiting the scene, etc. - not very clever even for a lay person.

It's entirely possible he wanted to be caught or at least to inject himself into the picture. How many times have we seen that before?

I know it's bad to say, but this story is right up Agatha Christie novel twists and I hope we get a Ryan Murphy season out of it, or some really good documentaries. It's fascinating.
