This is a very interesting article from cnn.com about a statistical link (causation has not been proved) between antiobiotic use in babies/toddlers and development of a variety of undesirable conditions--including but not limited to allergies, ADHD, and celiac disease. Different antiobiotics were linked to different conditions, with some variation by dosage, sex of the patient and age of the patient.

There definitely seems to be a connection to the microbiome. Babies who are born by C-section under sterile conditions also have an increased risk for those same conditions when they are older.

Interesting. I‘ve always wondered about this as our family has observed that our Gen Z member’s resistance to and recovery from illness seems to be related to how many antibiotics they got as kids and how much effort their parents made on keeping the house “germ free“ when they were little. My nephew’s wife was kicked out of a new mommy group in 2006 because she didn’t believe in trying to keep a sterile house or in getting antibiotics for every little thing. Her now teenage kids are mostly allergy free and rarely sick.

Well crap. That’s not good news.

DS has had antibiotics only once since we have had him with us. Lots before then.

He does have some allergies but nothing else on that list.

I can see allergies coming before getting antibiotics though with parents thinking the child had cold/flu instead of allergies and thus getting a prescription to treat.

I don’t know if that’s true, but it could explain why more people have allergies than ever. PB & jelly sandwiches were the norm for lunch, then came along peanut allergies and now it’s a rainbow of food not allowed anymore in schools.
I do recall reading (somewhere a long time ago) that people who grow up with a pet (cat, dog, etc) tend to be healthier in the long run. Having a sterile environment can’t be healthy in a home.

I don't believe in having a sterile house or giving a lot of anti-biotics and one of our kids had childhood allergies and one didn't.

Statistics are not predictive to the individual. And allergies are very complex with lots of causes. (For example, my husband has asthma and allergies so if there is a genetic component, the kids may get those genes.)

I do hope this news gets parents off the "anti-biotics for every sniffle" kick but if I had small kids, I wouldn't worry too much about what happened in the past.

Anyone remember when a movie star (I don't remember who) led the unfounded and false claim that the vaccinations caused autism.

That move left a lot of children sick and dying .

My daughter's first son was born around that time. She lived in Venice Beach SoCal.

They got to a point where the vaxers could not be with the non-vaxers.

It was a to do.

it drives me crazy when people jump on the bandwagon without doing their homework. Certain allergies like eggs prevents some from getting a vaccine, but they are meant to protect you. Autism, ADHD, etc have all been “linked” to a wide range from vaccines to C section births to even having pets in the house. Point being, people will look for any excuse to point the finger at instead of looking for a solution
