Anatoly Samokhvalov's interview with Alina Zagitova for ria.ru

AS: Alina, I've never seen you so happy
AZ: I rethought a lot of things, besides I spent most of the summer in the show where I spoke to the older skaters who shared their experience with me. I listened to them closely and it became easier.

AS: Who were you talking to?
AZ: Aljona Savchenko, Tatiana Volosozhar, some foreign skaters. Their words were translated for me but I understood a bit here and there. I thought a lot about the last season. Frankly, I didn't want to compete. There was this feeling... a fear... no, not quite a fear but just that I didn't want to. After the Olympics I was so tired but I made myself come to the practices. Now I don't have to, my coaches put no pressure on me. They tell me `if you want to - go ahead'. That's it. When there is no pressure it's easier. It's just how it works for me.

AS: I.e. Eteri Tutberidze changed the tactics with you?
AZ: Eteri Georgievna and the team are much calmer and am much calmer. I stopped stressing out. Now I just skate for the fun and I udnerstand it.

AS: There was a strict discipline before and now you have a choice?
AZ: Yes, I have a choice, but I was raised to need the plan which I follow. I even have a joke having a warm up before the warm up. It's funny to hear, but that's discipline.

AS: Knowing you proved everything helped you this season?
AZ: Yes. After the Worlds I understood from now on - it's just for the fun.

AS: You are going to participate Tatiana Navka's show.
AZ: Right.

AS: First if was unclear how would you make it with the nationals.
AZ: I'll go to the nationals and then straight to the show and will participate it till the New Years. I am thrilled Tatiana invited me, it's going to be a great show and it's my first experience of the kind. Previously I never participated such shows in Russia. Come and see it. It's going to be interesting!

AS: Won't you be tired after the Nationals? After all you will have to get ready for the Europeans.
AZ: Well, the experience shows the show only helps.

AS: Will you compete anywhere before the Nationals except for the GP?
AZ: No, I'll just take my time getting ready for the Nationals. Besides, my next GP is quite soon.

AS: It was a bit weird you didn't compete before the GP and yet you are in a great shape. You also were in a great shape in the Test skates and Japan Open
AZ: The same reason: I am set to enjoy. I used to go out on the ice and thinking just how will I pull through the practice. Now I can just glide around and suddenly think `wait, the practice is over? Already?'. It's a feeling I had during the Olympic season and it's back now and I love it. Time just flies.

AS: You said you will never skate like Carolina Kostner. Why?
AZ: Because each skater has their own style.

AS: Who is your ladies skating idol?
AZ: Everyone has something special. Something I take with me. But I wouldn't want to copy someone completely. So will name no names.

AS: Do you follow any other sports?
AZ: I follow the rhythmic gymnastics and I would love to attend the Tokyo Olympics and support our team there. Will see whether it'll happen, but I would love to. The Worlds were recently and I was following them and was glad our girls won and he guys were decent in the team event. I watch hockey because my father is a hockey player. Hockey is my childhood game.

Good on Zagitova for approaching all of this the right way.

It seems that she has looked at the rise of the new juniors as a means for the pressure to be taken off of her.

Tutberidze is probably approaching everything a lot more calmly in respect of Zagitova this season, because the public focus is on the quad girls and Zagitova does not so much affect the brand of Sambo 70 as much any more. Whereas last season there was this kind of desperation about proving that Zagitova could remain competitive.

And this mood will likely continue. Over the next couple of seasons, the massive focus will now be on Tutberidze trying to prove she can keep those quads in Shcherbakova and Trusova, so I think Zagitova will be off the hook should she decide to continue skating.

Very off topic, but I doubt she is following too closely
The guys one 3 golds (incl. team) plus 3 more medals.
The girls 3 in total and no gold.

I think she is talking about Rhythmic gymnastics proper and Artistic Gymnastics, then the girls winning makes sense (Averina Sisters won)... I assume guys is a mistranslation for group event .

  • Follow other sports? Maybe you watch the football of the Russian national team, watch Artyom Dziuba, follow Khabib Nurmagomedov or Conor McGregor?
  • I watch rhythmic gymnastics and I want to go cheer for our team at the Tokyo Olympics. Let's see how I do it, but I would like that. Recently, the world championship in gymnastics was held, which I also followed, where our team showed a good result, and the boys won the team tournament for the first time. I watch hockey because my dad is a hockey player. Hockey is from childhood.

I guess in Russian "Rhythmic" is used for Artistic since more than one occasion I have seen it been translated this way

I hope Alina gets a quad and works on her skating skills. All the negativity around her skating (here among other places) makes me want her to have more success...If not, well...she has still achieved amazing things...

No idea if getting a quad is as simple as that. The only grown adult lady (Tursynbaeva) to learn and land one has been out for the first part of this season injured.

I just feel like writing off some of these ladies like Zagitova, Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva might be a bit short-sighted in the long term.

It probably isn't... I think it's probably much harder to get one now than before, but who knows....

Yes, it's the great experiment of this quad to see how it all unfolds.

I'm watching Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva with interest as they are the two adult skaters who we know are genuinely trying for a quad. No idea if there's a correlation between being able to do a triple axel and a quad.

YT has footage of her trying a 4F on a harness last year. (Not ready for showtime yet.) Given who her coaches are, I would be surprised if she hasn't been working on the big jumps for some time.

I am happy she's happy and content. She's obviously a fighter, but the pressure was getting to her last season and it was painful to watch.

Part of the pressure came from media, some interested parties inside the Federation and fans who were not happy that she won the Olympics instead of "the other". This was the first time i saw such "resentment" and blunt aggressive actions to hold an athlete down, in favor of "another". It started the day the 2018 Olympics ended, and is still taking place, as recent as today.

Zagitova was 15 at the time, and now she is only 17, and i admire how she has endured it all, and still won the Worlds last year, and still plans to skate at least until 2022.

On a fun note, at the GP-France event, Alina did say "the wrong girl got the gold"... :D

Excellent interview, thanks for posting! I love that Alina is calmer and skating for herself now. I agree her skating has matured, and while there are still things she needs to work on, I hope she and her coaches can work on them calmly and not worry about needing to win every single competition. That is for the 3A to worry about now. I hope we will see Alina skating for many more years. Also, I agree with the poster who said it would be short sighted to write off Alina, Liza, and Evgenia. They are extremely competitive ladies who have already stuck around (esp Liza and Evgenia) and the 3A are quite young and doing very challenging things. A lot can happen in the next 1-3 years.

Shiseido artists developed 2 different make-up patterns (looks) for each one of Alina's programmes - Me Voy and Cleopatra.
Japanese article (google translates).

“SHISEIDO” devised a make-up pattern for the official game in cooperation with Alina Zagitova, a female figure skater who acts as a global ambassador.

The brand has been supporting hair and makeup in the official game since 2018, when Zagitova became the global ambassador. Invented jointly by Shiseido hair makeup artists. The short program was the theme of “a dignified woman traveling from passionate love”, and the free skating theme was “Cleopatra”. Two makeup patterns will be used in all official games."

I dont know if she really is so calm and not interested in the placements as she says she is. I have my doubts especially after seeing her before the medal ceremony. She was so upset... she didnt even want to take a picture with Kostornaya for the usual post of Daniil on Instagram.

She was disappointed with her SP performance, right when she was getting off the ice, before she heard the marks.

But was just fine with the marks, she and her team..

Thank you for this. I’m relieved to hear she is happier this season. She’s a sweet kid. Her skating remains beautiful in my opinion. Having to back up your Olympic gold in the following season, having never medaled at Worlds (and in her case never even attended a Worlds) had to have been difficult under the myriad circumstances. Glad she did though, otherwise people would be yakking about it for years to come.

But she did compete at Worlds her Olympic season. She didn’t skate well, but she competed. last year was her 2nd worlds. Maybe I mis read what you mean though 🤷‍♀️

Competing at senior worlds and Olympics doesn’t prevent anyone competing at junior worlds. In some countries they have only one skater in the category and the skaters can be send to junior and senior worlds. There is also the pair skater, Annika Hocke, who skated at two senior worlds, one Olympics and this season is on junior grand prix, JGPF and very likely will go to junior worlds. If there was no one better and if they meet the minimum scores, they could also be sent to senior worlds.
