Russian Skaters Allowed to Compete as Neutrals (AIN) to Qualify for 2026 Winter Olympics

My man, I opened the link hoping it'd contain, IDK, news related to sports or figure skating. What's this news link about Russia-Ukraine war - purely about that and nothing else - doing here and not PI? Did this latest bit of news affect something with regards to Russia's participation in the Olympics?

Ummm my point is why are they allowed to compete as anything if this is what they inflict on to another country. What are the Olympics to you? I think you may have forgotten the concept of what the Olympics spirit is.

next time I’ll DM you every time…. Hey on my own, should this go in the US ladies thread or more the Isabeau Levito thread. I don’t want you to come undone, Don’t wanna upset and rattle your day having to look at a thread that no one posted in over two months.

A morally corrupt sleazefest that should be cancelled regardless of Russian participation.

No no need to do that, I will just assume it's irrelevant if you post here :P

Random thought - I was trying to speculate on how the 2 RUS neutrals will be received at the Olympics; warm embrace, polite applause, ignored / audience sitting on their hands? I suppose since the IOC made a huge effort to only allow RUS athletes with as much distance as possible from their government and the war, I suppose they would be warmly received, perhaps w/ some protests, silent or otherwise.

If Adelya gets there, will she sit in the K&C w/ Eteri ?

Again- what are Petrosian and gumennik doing to Ukraine?

Possibly very dangerous. Any Americans in the audience are likely to throw stuff at them and try to injure them

Use cell phone flash to distract them
Throw stuff on the ice before a jump

Hopefully there are hockey like barriers put up

That doesn’t solve the flash while jumping problem. Maybe more guards wherever Americans are

I expect it would be a tepid response from the audience.

And, yes, there's no reason to think Eteri won't be with her in the KnC.

A tepid response would not be anything new. For the skaters themselves it would be easy to believe its because no one knows them. Has never heard of them. They have to worry about extreme violence from Americans.

As an American attending the Olys I plan to sit on my hands. I’d never boo a young athlete doing his/her best under difficult circumstances. As for Americans in general, it’s laughable to think they’re planning to be violent in sports situations when soccer hooligans from Europe are by far the worst.

Yeah, the worst behavior we get here in the States is when the Eagles win the Super Bowl and Philly riots. ;)

Bottom line there would be no way to distinguish a cold reaction to a Russian skater vs a non reaction to a skater no one had ever heard of in their life!!

Plus the whole toxic American attitude towards Russians is so much worse than in any point in history.

Dude, right now, Americans don't give two figs about Russians. They're irrelevant on the international stage.

Interpol.

Guess you’ve never heard of the Cold War. Figures.

What were Russians banned from during the Cold War? Nothing!
How soon we forget the reciprocal boycotts in 1980 and 1984 Olympics. Athletes banned by their own governments from participating. Russian students were not accepted for exchange at American universities and travelers usually only given visas if they defected or had official positions, which was a bit de trop because the Soviets didn’t let ordinary people travel. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/russia-cold-war-travel-ban-maps-red-scare

But you’ve been told this before and you continue to parrot Putin’s talking points.

😝 The kind of Americans who can afford to come to Italy and buy Oly tickets are not the kind of people who throw things.

Well, this has gone off the rails, the article I posted yesterday morning was…. I just don’t see how all these poor people sleeping in train stations and outdoors, have no homes and have to worry about bombs falling on them in the middle of the night that the citizens of the country where the bombs are coming from in the attack and has been coming for years are allowed to compete as something called The Olympics.

I think on my own thought I posted it in the wrong thread, but I didn’t think it should go in the Madison Hubbell and Gabriella Papadakis thread.

@AngieNikodinovLove (ANL) there's an entire board dedicated to politics, and even a thread dedicated specifically to this discussion with a political tone. Why separate the politics board and the sports boards if it wasn't needed?

Anyway, we all love CE's trolling so much that we can't stop replying to it ;)

You still make no sense, this thread is titled Russian athletes allowed to compete and I’m like why should they compete after what I’m still seeing and what’s happening in the news and to these poor people. What are you supposed to discuss in this thread the protein intake for 16 year old Eastern European skaters who have been MIA for two seasons?

I never talk about politics or barely going to any politics thread, we can agree to disagree on this one. It just makes zero sense, and the fact that you wanna make such a big deal about it. Like that was all you had on your agenda for a Saturday in July.

It’s like me saying why are you coming into the Amber Glenn Realness thread when you should go into the Amber Glenn appreciation thread. Crickets.

If they compete, it will not be as representatives of Russia. There's been a selection process to weed out anyone with strong links to the state.

^ my point is they should not be able to compete at all. No matter what title you put on their participation. Anyways, this was never something I intended to be such a big deal.

News about their participation and discussion based off it...? That was my point, the link you posted had political news, not news related to the sports side of it. Like if it said Russia destroyed yet another rink (which is what I expected to read when I opened it on this thread), then I'd get why you posted it here.

Anyway, whatever.
