CNN - Rachel Held Evans, popular Christian writer, dies at 37
Tweet from Hillary Rodham Clinton
Tweet from Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church
Tribute from Jonathan Merritt in USA Today
Ed Stetzer - Reflecting on Rachel: Why She Mattered
HarperCollins - Evans’ final book will be published in October 2020
I decided to do a thread on this in case there are others here - either because they are/were in Christian culture or knew of RHE’s writings from outside of it - who have feelings about this.
The hashtag #BecauseOfRHE trended globally last weekend, so she had a lot of impact on many people.
It’s been about a week and I’m surprised by how shocked I still am by her death. Not just because we were close in age, how sudden she went ill, or she had two really young children. I think it’s because, for me, I felt connected to her writing because we were both raised in Evangelical Christianity and had spent a lot of our adult lives figuring out what our faith really was. And I feel that there were (and still are) a lot of people in our boat.
Did I totally agree with her? No - being intellectually honest - who should end up 100% agreeing with anyone on something like religion, anyway? But I felt that agreement wasn’t the point with her writings. I always appreciated that she bought up important questions and topics that needed to be discussed.
Sigh. You always think that a voice will be around for decades. It turns out not to be always true.
