The American penny died on Wednesday in Philadelphia. It was 232.

The cause was irrelevance and expensiveness, the Treasury Department said.

Nothing could be bought any more with a penny, not even penny candy. Moreover, the cost to mint the penny had risen to more than 3 cents, a financial absurdity that doomed the coin.

"A nickel saved is a nickel earned" and ""Love is like a magic nickel / Lend it, spend it, give it away / It comes right back to you" do not have the same ring to them.

I love Malvina Reynolds' Magic Penny song. My goodness, for her sake I am glad she isnt around for this era we are in, but I would love to know what songs she would've written in response to it.

Everyone in my family saves pennies; I have a sentimental attachment to them.

My grandfather saved pennies in a galvanized bucket; when I was born the bucket and pennies reportedly weighed 40 lbs. My grandfather took the bucket of unwrapped pennies to the bank and cashed them in; it was enough to buy me a baby carriage.
