Starting a thread in case anyone is watching the 2024 NBA Finals - tonight is Game 1 of the Boston Celtics vs. Dallas Mavericks in Boston (Celtics look in control with 4 mins. left).

Article on the current "chaos" surrounding WNBA Indiana Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark (June 6, 2024):
The spotlight on the WNBA has never been more significant than this season — and that's a win for the nascent league.
But what was supposed to be a watershed moment for the league has turned sour over the last several weeks as the discourse surrounding the WNBA has evolved from the mass recognition of women's basketball ability to the treatment of a single player: Caitlin Clark.
Clark is the biggest reason for the league's rise right now. The attention she gained during her four years at Iowa has helped catapult the league.

Christine Brennan's article on Caitlin Clark today:
Excerpts:
Caitlin Clark, the most popular women’s basketball player in the nation, if not the world, has been left off the 2024 U.S. Olympic women’s basketball roster, three people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports Saturday morning.
This confirms USA TODAY Sports’ overnight reporting that Clark — whose thrilling logo 3’s and pinpoint passes have electrified record crowds and TV audiences while earning her WNBA rookie of the month honors and numerous rookie statistical records — has been snubbed by USA Basketball.
USA Basketball, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and Clark could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday morning.
The timing of USA Basketball’s decision could not have been worse. Clark made a WNBA rookie record-tying seven 3’s and scored 30 points in front of the largest WNBA crowd in 17 years: 20,333, Friday night in Washington, D.C. Entering the game, won by Clark’s Indiana Fever, the Fever and Mystics were a combined 2-19. Hundreds of children and adults in the crowd wore Clark’s No. 22 jerseys.
The audience at Capital One Arena was more than double the crowd the Chicago Sky drew the night before in the same building.
For months, Clark’s possible selection has been the topic of speculation throughout the basketball world.
“I don’t know how you leave the country without her,” four-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie told The Sporting News in April, adding that Clark “one hundred percent” should be on Team USA.

@skipaway posted this WaPo article in the Paris Olympics general news thread in this subforum earlier today:
Excerpt:
USA Basketball’s roster will be headlined by five-time gold medalist Diana Taurasi and WNBA stars A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. The group also is expected to include Napheesa Collier, Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Alyssa Thomas and Jackie Young. USA Today and the Athletic first reported the decision to leave off Clark.

Something’s going on and it’s very abnormal. She has all the records, she’s so popular, brings ratings. It must be radical black activist who hate her because she’s white which has been demonstrated by the hateful comments of black David duke sonny Huston on daily tv show The view

Christine Brennan's column today - Leaving Caitlin Clark off Olympic team, USA Basketball airballs on huge opportunity:
Excerpt from the end:
But something strange and potentially much most impactful is percolating around the snub of Clark. Two sources, both long-time U.S. basketball veterans with decades of experience in the women’s game, told me Friday that concern about how Clark’s millions of fans would react to what would likely be limited playing time on a stacked roster was a factor in the decision making.
If true, that would be an extraordinary admission of the existence of real tension that the old guard of women’s basketball harbors for this multi-million-dollar sensation. The two people spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
But if the players and USA Basketball officials think not having Clark in Paris means people won’t be talking about Clark around them, well, that’s just not going to happen. It’s a sure thing that one of the first questions they will receive at their opening press conference at the Games will be: “Why isn’t Caitlin Clark here?”
And if the team is missing 3’s, or has a scare, or doesn’t play well, or, horrors, loses, Clark’s name won’t be far behind and likely will become omnipresent back on the home front.

US opts for experience and versatility on Olympic women’s basketball roster, passes on Caitlin Clark (June 11, 2024):
“Here’s the basketball criteria that we were given as a committee and how do we evaluate our players based on that?” Rizzotti told The Associated Press in an interview. “And when you base your decision on criteria, there were other players that were harder to cut because they checked a lot more boxes. Then sometimes it comes down to position, style of play for Cheryl (Reeve) and then sometimes a vote.”
Diana Taurasi is back for a record sixth time. Her Olympic career started when she was a WNBA rookie in the 2004 Athens Game, and now the 42-year old will be on the team again. Other returners from the Tokyo Olympics are Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd and Brittney Griner.
Besides the returners, the Americans also added 5-on-5 newcomers Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young, who helped the U.S. win the inaugural 3x3 gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Several first-time Olympians will join the team with Alyssa Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu and Kahleah Copper. All three played on the American team that won the World Cup in Australia in 2022.
All 12 of those players had senior national team experience. Clark, to no fault of her own, does not.
“She’s certainly going to continue to get better and better,” Tooley said. “Really hope that she’s a big part of our future going forward.”
The selection committee has a set of criteria to pick the team that includes playing ability, position played and adaptability to the international game. Marketing and popularity aren’t on that list.

Kawhi Leonard has withdrawn from the Paris 2024 team. Derrick White will take his place.

That exhibition game with Canada was fun.
Lebron, Steph, Ant Edwards, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, and Jayson Tatum all looked great. Jrue Holiday and Tyrese Haliburton were very good distributors. Team should be even better once Kevin Durant comes back.
