Plane and Blackhawk helicopter crash in Washington DC

Fox is reporting 3 people on board the Black Hawk and 60 passengers & 4 crew on board the plane.

I was with a huge group of VA/DC/MD kids at a hotpot in Wichita celebrating the end of the camp, though several of them still had sessions this morning in the invite-only segment of the camp.

Been trying to reach my friends and no one's answering. I called the sister of a skater and she was already crying hysterically because her mom, dad and brother are on that flight

So awful. I know WFSC had at least 5 Intermediate to Novice skaters at the camp.
 
I flew home Monday via SW to BWI.

I'm watching local news. They showed the clip of the collision. So horrible. Praying there are survivors. It sounds like rescue crews were on the scene quickly. No word yet on survivors. :(

Reading Ethan's post above, I hope all of the skaters who know those on the plane are getting support.

Reagan is similar to LaGuardia....short runways next to a body of water. There have been numerous close calls over the years that you hear about. This tragedy affirms my desire to avoid flying in/out of there.
 
So sad. I heard Wichita and wondered about skaters, but didn’t think about the development program skaters, family members and coaches.

I still remember a plane going down in the Potomac in the winter when I lived in DC and nobody survived.

And for US Figure Skating, even worse given the 1961 crash.
 
I mistakenly thought that everyone who was at US Nats had already headed home by now. I completely forgot that there was a development camp for the younger skaters after Nats ended, so now I'm a lot more anxious about this accident and praying even harder for everyone. What a horrible tragedy. :(
 
Our old coach -- who went home yesterday -- is currently in the staging area at Reagan together with the dad of one of his skaters (all of his 3 students and their families are on the flight) to wait for any news. My best friend is on that flight together with her skater son and her husband.

Search and rescue operation is becoming more grim, with no survivors recovered so far, source says​

The search and rescue operation for survivors of Wednesday’s plane collision is becoming more grim, according to a law enforcement source.

The source described images from rescuers as “stunning,” saying it was hard to make out what they were seeing. The plane, they said, was in several pieces.

Two law enforcement sources and a source familiar with the situation confirm that no survivors had been recovered at this point.

Officials are preparing for this to be the deadliest disaster in DC in decades since an Air Florida Flight crashed into the 14th Street Bridge, connecting Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, DC, in 1982, according to the source.

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser will be part of the 12:30 a.m. presser, her team says.
 
Press conference just started... DC Mayor Muriel Bowser is speaking with the new Sec'y of Transportation Sean Duffy at her side.

My heart goes out to Bowser - she looks like she's definitely been crying. And Duffy's eyes look red too.

I would guess they have some idea, though nothing will be confirmed until the NTSB finalises their investigation.

More importantly, it is likely they have stopped flights because of the sheer amount of resources going into the search and recovery, including a lot of helicopters. It is far safer to just close the airport, particularly given the location is on the approach for one of the runways. And it will let them get counselling for the poor ATC staff.

Some folks are posting that the version of the Blackhawk in the crash is the kind used for high-level executives and that it took off from Langley, which is CIA headquarters. So the story about it being on a training mission is at least debatable at this point.
