Construction sites are dangerous places to work in the best of times and these are not the best of times.

There was an article about the problems at NYC construction sites a few months ago, a big problem is a shortage of site safety inspectors.

From what I read, the Dept of Building reps had cleared the crane just the prior day, but there were a lot of questions about why the crane was left up when snow and heavy winds were predicted. Apparently a 37 mph gust was recorded in the area shortly before the collapse, although it's not clear that was the cause.

But there is a sweet story about a NYFD chaplain and a bride caught up in the crane collapse
