New Puppy: How do we get her to sleep?

I once purchased a puppy in NJ and brought her home to PA and to my vet the next day. 7 weeks old. Vet said it is illegal to sell pups under, I think it was 8 weeks, in PA. I pointed out that her papers were from NJ. couldn't take her back, but she was young.

I really think 10 weeks is best, my Cavalier was that age, pups have learned better by then how to separate from the mother.

Oh well, just more work for the humans!

She's very sweet!
The family we got her from told us it's illegal for breeders to re-home a puppy under 8 weeks old here in NY, but they aren't breeders. Dharma doesn't have any papers telling her lineage, we just know she's a full dachshund because we know who her parents are, and they do have papers. This was an oopsie litter. My oldest daughter was actually at the house when the puppies were born. She babysits for the kids. We basically got her when they were ready to release the pups.

Last night was a great night. My daughter put the puppy in bed with her. Puppy is already good at letting her know when she has to go potty, and they have a nice beginner routine worked out. She's adjusted really well here, and she's constantly trying to play with the other dogs and cats. She's extremely spunky. I just love watching her run and hop and trip over herself. Her giant, floppy ears make me giggle.

I have heard a lot of people say this, but my vet flipped out when I raised this so I never did it.
There is a lot of advice out there on the web about dogs that makes me cringe. I blame Cesar Milan.

There's the whole classical (e.g. aversive) training versus positive reinforcement debate, the latter being more popular today. Cesar tends a bit towards the latter.

I've worked with a few dog trainers, and generally find them to be a rather disagreeable bunch. I did have one trainer I really liked, and she was actually affordable - but she has unfortunately moved away.

I would say he embraces it enthusiastically. And back when I was binge-watching his show, he said a number of things about how dogs think and act that have been disproven.

A lot of the advice that you see about the pack and how to treat dogs because they are pack animals is based on research into wolves and later studies have shown that (1) dogs aren't wolves and (2) the wolves were acting atypically because of the stress of being in captivity. I would never use a dog trainer who subscribed to these theories and used aversion therapy.

I have heard a lot of people say this, but my vet flipped out when I raised this so I never did it. Eventually, the dogs will regulate themselves. But they should always have access to water.

When I got my rescue dog, she had clearly gone without water way too much. She drank obsessively. Good times, let me tell you. Eventually she calmed down and drank 'normal' amounts.

@Badams she looks adorable! Hope it's working out.

My neighbor told me to do it. ?‍♀️ It seemed to work ok him.

Sorry, I don't agree. A dog should always have access to water - though if the dog is in the bedroom with her/his humans, probably won't be available there. But with a young pup you get up in the night to let pup out, in which case a pup should have a chance to drink water.

Dogs can't always tell you that they are thirsty, and dogs drink a lot of water.

That young, I've put them in a box by the bed and put my hand it in for a night or two. It would have helped if you'd given a stuffed toy to the breeder and let them get the litter's scent on it. I don't believe in letting them cry. It's too traumatic. I've got up many times at night the first couple of nights to reassure a pup, but it usually doesn't take more than a couple until they imprint on you. Putting a tee-shirt with your scent on it in the crate can help as well.
Put in a tshirt you have worn. Your smell will be comforting.

Dharma is doing so much better with sleeping now. She gets up once in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and she's a very early riser. This is a great lesson for my daughter, who is 14. She says she never wants a baby.

Dharma has the cutest little wannabe growl when she play attacks her toys, but we have yet to hear her bark. She's definitely a cuddler, and she's obsessed with the old man dog. She wants to cuddle him. It's nice to have a puppy in the house again. She and our 2 year old Horgi chase eachother through the house all day long. Horgi needed a playmate.

She's so cute! We got our first puppy when I was about 12. Our parents said - 'your puppy, you get up at night to let him out or you clean up after him'. We would take turns setting the alarm to get up in the middle of the night. I can relate to your daughter - it made me never want a baby either!

Maybe your other dogs can teach her to bark when she wants something. :)

Dharma finally barks a little now. It's so adorable! She's got the tiniest, squeakiest bark. I swear she's doubled in size, but she still fits in my hand. And I have tiny hands. I will have to share more pictures of her when I get some good ones.

Take lots of pictures! They grow literally overnight and so quickly! ❤️

Yes same here except I was 11. I had desperately wanted one for years. I did everything for him and loved every moment!

So I thought I would give an update... Dharma is doing really well! She sleeps with me every night. She isn't my dog, but she seems to have pegged me as her person. I don't mind. Either does her owner, Francesca. She struggles with potty outside, but she is doing so much better. Spring, summer, and fall she does so well. Winter is difficult. She is so tiny, the snow swallows her right up. My kids went back to school this past year, so she has gotten used to being home without people. People are still her most favorite though. She absolutely loves the Horgi. They are so cute together. Total besties. I will see if I can share some current pics.
