Music You Hate in Skating

I really thought I could put up with anything, if it was well interpreted, but after realising other skaters are now using that Forrest Blakk poem, I have to put my foot down. NEVER AGAIN. It was intolerable the first time, and that was when mitigated by P/C's amazing movement.

Anything I've heard more than once. There's a big world of music, discover it skating community. It doesn't help that I loathe jazzy stuff, tangos, musicals, and medleys; that's most of the current figure skating sounds catalogue.

It seems that coaches, choreographers, and athletes reuse music far too often. Part of the issue may be costs but I suspect the bigger problem lies in skating's tendency to err on the conservative side in all things. Far too many folks fear taking a chance, and when one among them sort of, kind of does in a timid way - the unfortunate rise of Muse, for example - everyone else thinks Ooh, there's something edgy that's been tested!

I kinda blame the fans as well for this music rehash and many, many, many trips down musical memory lane. When skaters debut something a little different there seem to be loads of complaints, prompting even more repeats, featuring plenty of reused 60-90s mainstream 'rock' and musical film medleys or covers along with the more traditional warhorses. And that song about feeling in a non-negative mood that I won't name in case I summon a new hoard of programs set to it.

On a more positive note, my three favourite songs I've heard used in skating of late were Cosmo Sheldrake's "Come Along" (I swear Eva Lotta Kibus had this song at some point), Dave Not Dave's "Cold Blood" and Apashe's "Good News" (both Alexander Samarin). I didn't hate Disturbed's "The Sound of Silence" cover until it was warhorsed into the ground. Papadakis/Cizeron almost always made excellent music choices. I'll also never forget Morisi Kvitelashvili bringing us a mashup of some R. Kelly hit and Haddaway's "What Is Love" - if you're going to choose ridiculous older-modern music, go all in!

I don't really blame the skaters for reusing music, many are young and to them it's still new music. And you're right, when someone thinks out of the box, the music choice of that person won't be liked either.

I just become bored hearing the same music again and again. A skater has to offer something beyond special to still make that program interesting. I do notice that when I don't hear that music for a while, I start liking it again. This happens with my favourite music even. There is a limit to how often I even want to hear my most beloved pieces of music.

I remember when watching CD's out of boredom (I'm not an ice dance expert and this was decades ago), you heard the same music for hours. After a few hours, I was happy not to listen to that music again. How did those judges sit through that, I wonder now.

I'm easy to please when it comes to the music! I can have a repore w/ just about anything from Plushenko's intro-season w/ JM Jarre's "new age" (sound effects) to a classic like "Swan Lake" which didn't bother me! I have few objections if it's choreographed well, but can do without CARMEN ever being performed again! Men, Ladies, & Pairs have overused that one over the decades! No fan of American Men using showtunes for their Short Programs! It's usually too cutsie and meant to be! I just found it a phony/cheat way to show energy and connect with the audience! Ilia Kulik used Gershwin w/ that silly giraff costume, but it was what brought about an Olympic winning performance in '98! :grandpa::rolleyes::scream:
