Ok in light of this, how much do I wish Ilia would skate to “America the Beautiful” for a program or exhibition next season.
Quite a lot…..

Quite a lot…..

Even then people were leaving Russia.Native Americans came to the Americas across the Bering Land Bridge from Russia and are thus Russians. Everyone knows this.
Actually, all (human) roads lead back to Africa. All roads lead to Russia!
Don't tell the Russians.Actually, all (human) roads lead back to Africa.![]()
Yeah, that must exactly be what it is.I think Maria thinks that Tatiana and Roman are like Elizabeth and Philip Jennings from The Americans and Ilia is like Paige, a CIA/KGB mole in training.
Um, not all of them according to the latest data.Native Americans came to the Americas across the Bering Land Bridge from Russia and are thus Russians. Everyone knows this.
Blech!! Proud American but not big on these themes in skating.Ok in light of this, how much do I wish Ilia would skate to “America the Beautiful” for a program or exhibition next season.

I’m not even American but I’ll be cheering extra loud now for Ilia at Worlds when I see him draped in the American flag.Blech!! Proud American but not big on these themes in skating.
This gives so much more colour to the 1998-9 season when they both broke through. Not an exact fan of their skating back then but was so glad that they presevered with good technique and did the best they could.Butyrskaya and Malinina were super close friends back in the day and I’d imagine they still are. I remember she once said that after they both failed to qualify for the short at 1993 Worlds, they sat and cried together. I also still remember Tatiana being super supportive to Maria at 2000 NHK directly after the marks came up that gave Slutskaya the controversial win.
Nobody is "native", everybody comes from other cultures around the world. I personally don't see any value in the word "American". It's not even an ethnicity.
Fact: Ilia is of Soviet heritage. So are his parents. He is born in the US. He skates for the US.
"Soviet heritage."![]()
I'm not sure about this assumption. Maria's main rival in the season she won her Worlds title was arguably Michelle Kwan (U-S-A).
“American defeats Kwan!”See, everyone? With a little bit of patience, this thread has naturally turned to its true subject, Michelle Kwan, who would undoubtedly have only the most diplomatic things to say about Ilia Malinin's nationality.![]()

You can say that, but MK had started falling off! She had seriously cut back her schedule after the Olympic season! She wasn't comp. tough as she performed in pro events using "East Of Eden" music! I watched that competition in 1999! Michelle commited jump errors in both her SP & LP so egregious, even Frank Carroll reacted ringside! MK got the Silver medal only due to reputation! Actually Ilia's mom, Tatiana skated better and should have medaled! I was quite happy for Maria winning GOLD even though not the most graceful of skaters!![]()

A lot of figure skaters from that era are/were close, and not necessarily the ones you'd expect. For instance, I remember an interview with Shae-Lynn Bourne where she talked about how much she loved Maria Butyrskaya.
I would. I think Scene d’Amour was her best. Otonal was great but I remember back in the day many people liked 17 Moments of Spring even better.I don't think anybody would deny that Otonal is Maria's finest program.
Scene d'Amour was chef's kiss and 17 Moments was an underrated gem. And it's awesome to hear that Shae-Lynn Bourne loved Maria. And when it comes to Kwan (and Slutskaya), I was always struck by the fact that Maria could beat each of them but not both of them at the same time.I would. I think Scene d’Amour was her best. Otonal was great but I remember back in the day many people liked 17 Moments of Spring even better.
If that's the case, no wonder Slutskaya was so bitter that in SLC, (paraphrase) they wouldn't allow the Russians to sweep the podium.
I am guessing Tatiana was sold up a creek by Russia to pay for Russia taking the top spot in every category at 1999 Worlds, if not to keep Soldatova on the podium.

No, but I’m sure we will get a thread with 117+ replies about any and all Russian opinions.Do you think she will go off the rails if US men’s nationals is something like Malinin, Torgy and Naumov?
There should be a thread like “ a Russian said something- set your hair on fire”No, but I’m sure we will get a thread with 117+ replies about any and all Russian opinions.
