Love, Balls and Courting: Tennis V

Big news..
Petra Kvitova
After seven fantastic years together I will no longer be working with my coach David Kotyza. We had a great run together, winning two Wimbledons, 17 titles and enjoying many laughs. I would like to thank David for the many things he taught me both on and off the court and I wish him all the very best in the future

Sharapova is fighting against Serena, so far 4-4 is the score.

Serena wins the first set 6-4.
It's hard to imagine anything other than a Serena-Vika final but stranger things have happened.

That Djokovic-Nishikori match was a bust. I'm not surprised that Novak won but Kei was just awful. I'm starting to think his run to the 2014 U.S Open final was a fluke. A lot of tools are there but there's that extra something missing from his game that the champions have. The fact that his body seems to be made of glass probably doesn't help!

Good on Serena for winning that match against Maria. That's been a very lopsided head to head match up for a while now. I wouldn't be surprised if she walks away with the title.

Yea, what's up with Nishikori?! Not looked good for a while.

I'm thinking another Djokovic-Murray final.

And hoping for Serena-Kerber, though that's a long shot :(

About a year ago, I vaguely recall reading about how Nishikori almost felt uncomfortable being near the top. That doesn't sound like the talk of a champion to me. Champions like Federer, Lendl, Djokovic, Graf, Navratilova, Seles, etc have/had the mentality to win win win. Kei doesn't seem to have that even if he's a very talented ball striker and moves extremely well.

Of course, part of it is that Djokovic is just too good. He's at a different level than most other players. Nishikori played well in the previous rounds, especially against Tsonga. And Nishikori has convincing head to head records against players like Raonic, Tsonga, and Berdych. But against the very cream of the crop, he's not quite there. Not consistently anyways.

Didn't watch the match; just saw the score. Vika :wall: what a missed opportunity! She had a 7-0 record vs Kerber before this.

I watched it. Vika started out missing her first 5 shots. She was broken twice in the first set. 2nd set, she was up 5-2 with triple set points and lost the next 5 games. I feel the same way. She needs the points so badly to up her ranking, this was the PERFECT opportunity. SHE HAS GOT TO WORK ON HER SERVE. She is the only one that plays Serena tough.

Vika needs to get her act together now. Serena will be retiring after this year or the next. Vika needs to take control of her game now so she can dominate for the next few years.

Johanna Konta defeats Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-1 to reach the Semi-Finals. In the process, she becomes the first British lady to make the Semi-Finals of a grand slam tournament since Jo Durie in 1983 (US Open)

This truly is a golden opportunity for Kerber. Hopefully she'll familiarize herself with Konta's game beforehand. One of the worst things a player can do is go into a match blind in terms of how their opponents play.

Well I'll go against the Kerber love here and say I would love to see Konta go through to the final. However I seriously doubt either can beat Serena in the final - as I expect Serena to swat Aga aside easily in their semi.

I think Konta has a really really good chance against Kerber. Kerber played well but she was little lucky so far.

Konta is a really good ball striker and she's beaten Makarova here but she beat Petkovic and Halep at last year.

Federer is being made to look like an ordinary player by Djokovic, so far Novak leads 6-1, 6-2.

He won't beat Djokovic if he doesn't serve well. He has to play clean to have a good chance and lately (meaning last few years) when he plays the top, errors creep into his game.

Raonic has such clinical albeit boring game; he really is Del Potro 2.0. The match between Murray is 1 set each and 3-3.

ETA: Hingis and Mirza won 36 consecutive doubles on their way to an Australian open. They together have won Wimbledon and US open, and will be looking forward to win French open titles to a non-calender year grand slam.
