Love, Balls and Courting: Tennis V

So far Venus Williams, Coco Vandeweghe and Sloane Stephens have all being knocked out in the first round of the AUS open 2018, Madison Keys is the only one left from the quartet of US players that reached the semis at the US open last year.

John Isner is just one game away from losing to Ebden from Australia.
ETA: Isner is gone as well.

On another site, I picked Ebden to give Isner problems! He was definitely in jeopardy of losing! :40beers: :encore: :respec:

This must be the most boring mens slam ever. Excited to see Fed win #20, but wish the event was way more interesting than this. Even worse than Wimbledon and the U.S Open last year which were both quite bad.

The womens event was amazing though especialy the Kerber-Halep, Kerber-Hseih, and Halep-Wozniacki matches. Who would have thought with Serena out the womens would be way more exciting than the men. Djokovic and Wawrinka really need to come back into form, or some young blood that is way better than Dmitrov or Kygrios needs to start to emerge.

Well then you are too paranoid a fan. Did you see the Wimbledon final last year. And this is the same opponent. It might be a better match than that, but no chance of anything other than a Federer win.
Really, what about this match:

I think Cilic's foot injury at Wimbledon last year really hampered him, so hopefully we'll see a better quality match this year in Australia.

Yes I watched it. I don't think I'm paranoid. I've just watched tennis long enough to know anything can happen. Every match is different. That said, go Roger!

:encore:Congrats to Federer - 20 Grand Slams is utterly amazing. And kudos to Cilic who forced 5 sets with some pretty good play. Unfortunately he couldn't sustain it and Federer shows pure class in winning a 6th Australian title - cementing his place as one of the greatest players of all time. :respec:

It was great to have a very good mens final to salvage an otherwise lackluster event. And combined with the womens final and semi final classic it was a great end to the Championship.

He was probably tired. It takes a lot of effort to play that kind of power tennis over an extened period, especialy for someone with such a skinny build.

20 grand slams for Federer! And to think I thought he was done a long time ago. Wouldn’t be surprised if he wins until he’s 40!

The 2018 Australian Open was the 200th Grand Slam tournament since the beginning of Open tennis in 1968. Federer now holds 10% of those titles.

My fave, Martina Navratilova numbers are more impressive with 59 GS titles; going strong to the last at almost 50!

Loved Roger's speech. I was taken aback at how emotional he was. Almost made me wonder if retirement is imminent. But it sounds like he's keeping going. He seemed quite humbled by it all. Great representative for tennis. :)

He's been emotional for as long as I can remember; win or lose! The tears and choking up are prominent; esp. when Laver presents him with a trophy! I didn't see it this time, but the last time he won the AO in 2010, he was bawling like a baby when "the great Rod Laver" passed the trophy to him! :respec: :wuzrobbed :violin:

Only 18 in singles though which only ties her for 5th amongst women. ;)

Going thru the likes of Court, Goolagong, BJK, Evert, Mandlikova, Graf, Seles, Sabatini, Capriati, Wade, & so many others of note! Like BJK, she transcends tennis, unlike Court, Graf, Seles, Williams, & Henin! I'll take Martina's career over any and all of these other players; male or female! Her numbers will last; probably forever in the annals of tennis lore since the OPEN era has been so tough! It was a lot easier for Court to get to her numbers; esp. "down under!" :COP: :soapbox: :yikes:

At the height of her dominance where she won almost all her slams from 82-87 Martina's only competition was an aging Evert (and for about a year a developing 16/17 year old Graf). :40beers:

Court has more slams at 3 of the 4 slam venues- Australia, Roland Garros, U.S Open than Martina, so not just at the Aussie Open, and more combined doubles/singles/mixed doubles slams than Martina too. And she retired at 33, not 55.
