Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

I liked the live action Lilo & Stitch, and thought the changed ending felt more realistic than the cartoon . . . Which feels “right” to me in that it’s easier to suspend reality in animation than live action.

I’ve seen a lot of the Disney live action re-makes and the best one IMO was Aladdin, a few unique moments—the jam discussion  and a bigger, better role for Jasmine—but essentially true to the original.

Regarding the Cinderella live action re-make, I’ve always wondered if the Frozen Fever short that released with it drove a lot of attendance numbers.

Surprisingly, I like the live-action version better than the animated version, though Robin Williams is the better genie.

I agree with this. I really enjoyed the live-action Aladdin, and Will Smith's take on the genie, but Robin is hard to top.

As far as other live-action Disney, I also quite enjoyed Beauty and the Beast, though I did think remaking the original was unnecessary when it was announced. I thought they did a good job of showing more of the back story behind the Beast's curse, and why the servants were cursed alongside him. I also thought the characters were well cast, on the whole.

I liked the live-action Beauty and the Beast, too. I love Hattie Morahan, so that helped.

I was disappointed in the Live Action Beauty & the Beast. I didn't like the changes and I felt like Emma Watson wasn't very good in the role.

ETA I forgot to say that we finally watched Captain America: Brave New World. It was fine. I think it's probably worth seeing on the big screen but I was fine watching it at home. I enjoyed it more than I expected to, in fact.

The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ reviews are coming out!

The Phoenician Scheme 🤔
Interesting that it's at 76% now with only 90 critics reviews as that is where French Dispatch and Asteroid City both ended up after all the reviews were in. Granted both French Dispatch and Asteroid City were pretty divisive even amongst his fans. I found French Dispatch a bit interminable, I love Asteroid City though.

I will admit from the trailers I'm not the most optimistic about The Phoenician Scheme. It looks like a movie that I will like because I like Wes Anderson movies but I won't necessarily recommend it to people who don't already like his work.

I am still hoping it makes it here when it releases in Canada next week though. I still want to see it and I've only ever been able to see The Grand Budapest Hotel in theatre.

I went to friendship on tuesday. Very funny in a dumb humour way

I'm going to Bring Her Back tomorrow

I liked it too, for these reasons. It wasn't perfect, but I liked that it added some depth to the characters and the story, and I liked the cast.

The live-action Cinderella was about as perfect as a film gets. I had always loved the original, but I loved the new one even more.

I HATED Maleficent. Wrecked the whole story.

I haven't bothered with the other live-action Disney remakes. Either the ads with animatronic animals or whatever looked weird and turned me off, or I just never got around to them.

The live action Jungle Book was surprisingly good but I've still only seen it once and I never bought the physical copy of it. Jungle Book was actually why I was surprised at how terrible the live action Lion King looked. Jon Favreau directed both and the Jungle Book had very well done animation that looked good. The Lion King didn't.

I enjoyed both Maleficent and Cruella but I have no real attachment to Sleeping Beauty or 101 Dalmatians. We didn't own them as kids so I didn't see them until I was older. I view them both as completely separate retellings of the stories. Sort of like official fan fiction if you will. I get why people don't like them though.

Also in the case of Cruella in particular Jenny Beavan's costuming is next level. Probably the best I had seen in a Disney related work since Ruth E. Carter's work on Black Panther.

Maleficent and Cruella, whilst they had a connection to the original stories, I have loved the telling of those stories from the villains side and were both unique in their own right. And both the main characters were likeable because they were three dimensional. Not just character carboard cutouts.

And I totally agree about the costuming in Cruella. It was amazing.

I will see it regardless of the reviews. There is a man who is an ardent Criterion Collection fan and he calls Wes Anderson films confections. In their way they are all sweet but each is a little different and you will enjoy some more than others just as you do with sweets. And for the people that don't like sweets....plenty of other tastes to choose from. For me "French Dispatch" appealed more than "Asteroid City."

This is so true. I will also be seeing it regardless of the reviews and largely for this reason. In contrast I preferred Asteroid City to French Dispatch but I do also think French Dispatch is a little over criticized. I need to watch it again to articulate why I think that though, it's been a while since I've seen it. Asteroid City just really hit at the level of kind of weird storytelling that I really like.

I have just enough time to see One movie before I go on a (rather nice) vacation. Which one should I see?

I am interested in the Phoenician but after three weeks it may still be running.

Any recommendations? (No violence/blood/gore please)

A lot of people worried How to Train Your Dragon will be a shot-for-shot remake and the trailer I've seen does nothing to assuage that fear.
