Any DC movie that has Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in it is automatically 20% better. I absolutely love her in that role.
 
Watched "Respect" recently, the Aretha Franklin biopic. The first half is pretty standard biopic fare, but the second half had me thinking I was watching an episode of This Is Us, what with me having to reach for a hankie so often. Jennifer Hudson does a good job, unsure whether she was robbed for an Oscar nomination as I haven't seen the movies with the five women who did get nominated. But once the character reaches her late teens, Hudson is on screen pretty much every second for the rest of the movie. Half of that is singing, so some might say she doesn't need to act much in those scenes, but that's probably selling the performance short. Especially after watching the DVD extras where we get to see Hudson spend up to six months working on changing her singing style from her own to that of Aretha, to working on a movement coach as well as working with a coach on Aretha's speaking voice. I found the scenes where songs are created (or re-created) to be the most interesting. Re-working Otis Redding's song "Respect" until it was no longer his song was quite something. Too bad this movie didn't get more acclaim.

The banter between the two lead actors throughout the movie was often quite silly and humorous.

If watching a couple dudes out on a traveling adventure whilst enjoying some fine dining along with playful banter is your thing, I'd recommend watching this.

At times it almost got a bit drab to me, but all in all, it was alright.

They have several travel movies. We watched one and I really did not like either of them so we decided not to watch any others. Generally I will suffer through a movie if travel and food are involved. :lol:
 
Btw—-have you noticed that the new “Top Gun” film is getting rapturous reviews? I was not expecting that. But maybe it will be a draw back into the movie theater.
 
I watched 'My best friend's wedding' on dvd Because I needed something light and a repeat. I find the movie silly but entertaining. For the serious movie I started watching 'Parallel mothers', starring Penelope Cruz. Directed by Pedro Amodar (sp?). Using subtitles because I don't understand Spanish at all. It seems interesting but I am saving it for Saturday evening because tv is usually boring Saturday nights.

Has anyone seen Licorice Pizza? Is it worth watching?

I was expecting TG2 to be dismissed by the critics as a typical mindless summer blockbuster movie, so I've been really surprised by the super positive reactions the film has been getting so far. 96% RT score currently. I think people will come out in drove to see it, especially in IMAX - I'd imagine the flying sequences to be phenomenal.

I think the decision not to use a green screen and to put the actors in the aircraft will benefit the film. You can’t send the director up with them so essentially they had to direct themselves while these G forces are bearing down on them. It sounds a great IMAX experience.
 
Watched 'Parallel mothers' by Pedro Almodovar, with subtitles. The movie is in Spanish. A lot of good things but some things didn't work for me.
No spoilers.

Positives-
Penelope Cruz - deserved her Oscar nomination For playing the complex character Janis.
The storyline about the two women was interesting and kept me guessing.
The relationship between Janis and Arturo was multidimensional and interesting.
Ana's uncaring and yet caring mother was well played by that actress.
Nice twists and turns to the story
Good direction and acting throughout.

Negatives-
It was a story wrapped in another, like an Oreo cookie- between beginning and end. It made the movie too long. I am not sure the historical part was really necessary. Toward the end it felt like a distraction from the main story, which was about the two women.

The younger woman Ana was totally miscast. She was supposed to be 17-18 years old but looked like she was 30. Actingwise she fell short Compared with the other actors. She was the weakest point in this movie, IMO.

The end felt abrupt. There were hints of how the different relationships were resolved but still it felt unfinished.

Overall 7/10.

I was a little disappointed that an Almodovar movie didn't quite reach the heights I had expected. There were moments and scenes that were very good, but as a whole I was slightly disappointed.

Sums up most of my feelings too, but I rated it higher once I learned more about the messages the movie was conveying about Spanish history, Franco, the civil war, and the way it haunted that whole generation and how Janis, Ana, and Ana's mother were all showcases of different products of that history. Not Almodovar or even Cruz's best, but I really held it in high esteem. My fave Cruz/Almodovar is still Volver by far. I'm sure you've seen that one already, so if you're up for another Almodovar, I would suggest Broken Embraces just for Lluis Homar, Penelope Cruz, and Blanca Portillo's performances, if you haven't seen that one. I would say more, but I don't want to influence your impression.

I have not seen either one though I had planned on seeing Volver. Will look them up.

"The New Mutants" starring a small cast of young actors was fine I guess..

Actually, no it wasn't that great.. I found many parts of it to be somewhat cheesy and disingenuous. Not very believable..

Sure the whole thing is a fictional idea, but it's still nice to watch a movie with a life-like feel to it, but I imagine that might be a hard thing for such young actors to pull off.

In comparison to other great Marvel movies that have been made, this one ain't quite in the same league.

I saw Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness yesterday. I thought it was quite good, but my friends felt less happy with it. One of them said he would have preferred to have seen the Downton Abbey movie instead, so I think he was along just for the company and isn't a big Marvel fan. I thought the story was one of the strongest I've seen for a Marvel movie. And the special effects were very, very strong. Elizabeth Olsen stole the show, her role was so much meatier than anything anyone else on screen had to work with. It was strange to see major characters meet untimely deaths, but I guess now with multiverses in the hundreds, anybody can be killed off...or still be alive somewhere. Wonder when Robert Downey Junior will run out of cash and return as Iron-Man?
 
My friends and I were fine with the first half of Multiverse of Madness but hated the direction of the second half. We felt the story line was pretty weak actually. We were very unhappy with it overall. I'm surprised to see so many here say they liked it. We did like some of the surprises but overall felt a lot of the movie didn't stay true to some of the characters and didn't make a lot of sense. We were also struggling to see how this would tie into the Loki storylines with the multiverse. It didn't even touch on those at all.

I think we are way overdue for a traditional post Memorial Day blockbuster and Cruise is a master promoter. And people want to be with people after so many quarantines. I would be more surprised if the movie had bombed. I’m happy for the movie theaters—-it must feel like rain after a long drought.
 
I checked HBOMAX today and they added the new “Fantastic Beasts” film and I promptly watched it. There are some things I knew to expect: Mainly I knew with Grindenwald gaining power the story would grow darker just as “Potter” did as Voldemort ascended. But I didn’t expect to see so little of Katherine Waterston. Newt, Tina, Queenie and Jacob—and those wonderful creatures—made this series fresh imho. The addition of Dumbledore was good but I hated seeing less of the core four although they were included. And the animals are always a plus. I hope scheduling conflicts—and not Waterston’s strong support for the trans community—is the reason we don’t see more of her.
 
Top Gun 2 totally lived up to the hype. It is a classic summer blockbuster with great action sequences and engaging storytelling. A truly “they don’t make them like this anymore” kind of film. I wasn’t interested at all about seeing it but planned to go with my brother since we haven’t been to the theater in a long time and thought this would be a nice way to start the summer. It was exhilarating in a way that an action movie has not been in a long time IMO. It feels so weird to say this about Top Gun 2 of all things but it’s the most satisfying movie I’ve seen in a long time.
