I saw You Can Call Me Bill last night along with a friend and we both thought it was fantastic. She is not a big Star Trek fan, though she does like it, but there’s plenty in it other than Star Trek. I found it touching, funny, nostalgic, and poignant. The NYT reviewer did not like it, but I think the parts he didn’t like were parts I liked a lot.

There was also a live streamed Q&A afterwards. We only stayed for around half an hour for that. It wasn’t nearly as interesting as the actual film.

It’s also good on the large screen. There are some shots of space from various telescopes that are spectacular, and some shots in a forest and on a glacier that are also beautiful.

I had worn a button with the line, “This is damn peculiar” and it was in one of the clips we saw! They also showed clips from the Big Bang episode that Shatner was in, and that happened to be next up in my queue. So that was very satisfying.

I enjoyed the documentary about his short trip to space. I think possibly he’s matured over the years. I also liked a memoir type book he wrote, or maybe I liked the ghostwriter but presumably Shatner had some input.

I loved his turn on Big Bang Theory. Thought he was hilarious.

I would definitely say that Shatner's ego has been tempered with age and experience. He can still be kind of spicy sometimes, but he's mellowed a lot.

Yep, I agree. I was wondering how much was scripted and how much him just talking in his stream of consciousness way. You can definitely see the growth in his language in the film.

I just checked and this Tuesday will be my 7th movie I have gone to see this year. I will be seeing immaculate (I am a horror fan). Have seen so far: night swim (meh), the zone of interest, Lisa frankenstein, the beekeeper, poor things and imaginary. In February they had $5 Tuesdays so I went to see the beekeeper which isn't my usual preference but I did like it. I am looking forward to problemista, civil war and Maxxine. I am a big a24 fan if you couldn't tell lol

Looks like we’re getting a Bob Dylan biopic - starring Timothée Chalamet!

Although, I’m not sure if A Complete Unknown will make it to the theaters by the end of this year in order to be eligible for that upcoming awards season. 🤔

It's possible, but I think they're probably aiming for a 2025 release. Timmy has certainly had a busy week.

Timothée Chalamet Signs Warner Bros. Deal to Star in and Produce New Movies After ‘Wonka’ and ‘Dune’ Success

What kind of startled me about those set photos from A Complete Unknown is that for a split second I thought those were actually pix of a young Bob Dylan. I'm pretty intrigued to see what Tim does with this. Being a lifelong Minnesotan, Dylan is one of my cultural icons.

One movie that I wish we were hearing a little bit more about is the Fred Astaire biopic starring Tom Holland. I've been anticipating that one for a while. Astaire was one of my first movie star crushes, after watching all of his movies with my mom when I was a really young kid. We were both huge fans.

From July 2023 posts re. Oppenheimer:
IMO, this is a great movie to provoke discussion. I think it raises a lot of thought-provoking questions, and not just about the bombing of Japan and the creation and proliferation of nuclear weapons.
I didn't care much about the way Einstein was used in it- not very effective. I would have liked to hear more protests from Einstein and other scientists after the US bombed Japan.
‘Oppenheimer’ finally premieres in Japan to mixed reactions and high emotions (March 29, 2024):

Well, peacock finally came into action today outside of figure skating to earn its six dollars a month because House of Gucci is now on it. I have always wanted to see this movie. I’m so excited the peacock picked it up.

First warning sign of not good news to come …. A nearly three hour run time….

Well, I can see why Oscar skipped over it. I thought Gaga was mesmerizing, but she definitely has the accent wrong, it’s not Italian. And critics panned Jared Leto, but I actually thought he did a really good job as did Pacino.

I thought Adam and Gaga had no chemistry together and they were miscast together.

My problem was the script. First of all that was the longest and slowest burn I have ever seen in a movie, I wanted to stop five times in the first hour and 15 minutes. It was just so boring. And then, lastly, a lot of the dialogue, especially for Gagas character just seem like one-liners. I feel like the script did not have much dialogue but the content just a lot of one-liners or two words put together…..Mostly for Gagas character.

Was interesting to see they all went to jail at the end.

So I would say after Cher (excluding the dreadful burlesque) my favorite movie actress is Kidman. I just think she’s brilliant and she chooses really good films, I like it when an actress doesn’t always go for blockbusters but picks the independent low paying budget films. I’m sure she gets a good check though. I am not a Star Wars type of person. I am more of a fried green tomatoes person.

Anyway, I saw on my Apple news that Empire ranked Nicole Kidman’s top 10 movies and trust me she has done so many that I could give a top 25 list.

Almost everybody has it right by putting “the others” in first place and then my next favorite film of hers is Dogville. So I haven’t seen like the Northman because my mom said it was too violent and I don’t wanna see that. There’s also some others I have not seen in the top 10 like killing of a sacred deer and Stoker. I have not seen these.

I think there’s no way I could include a top 10 list for Kidman without BIRTH, lion, and boy erased. I cry every time I watch lion and boy erased. I wonder if because boy erased was an LGBT film and was probably only played in 10 theaters in the USA is why no one puts it in their top 10.

Eyes wide shut I hated even though I love the storyline, but I hate what tom and Nicole did with it and Stanley. Oh also, the Hours needs to be in the top 10. I mean that’s what she won her Oscar for. And yes, I know rarely do actors win the Oscar for the role in which they should. Sidenote, people rip on Renee Zellweger, winning her Oscar for this, but I don’t have a problem with Renees win in supporting actress that year.

Crap I also love the beguiled, bombshell, and the human stain, holy crap was the human stain really good. See, she has so much material to choose from.

Here was the movies academy forum that people were commenting on the article, and then putting their top 10 placements in order.

Empire ranked them as the following

From this month's edition:

1 The Others
2 Destroyer
3 Paddington
4 Dead Calm
5 To Die For
6 Eyes Wide Shut
7 Dogville
8 Stoker
9 Moulin Rouge
10 The Killing Of A Sacred Deer

Crap now I can’t find the Empire article from this morning, but doing a Google search, everybody and their mother has it rained Nicole Kidman’s movies, lol. Here’s one from screen rant, that I kind of agree with. .

I just watched "Scoop" on Netflix, a movie about the downfall of Prince Andrew and the journalists that brought his interview out. Starring Gillian Anderson and Billie Piper, the acting was wonderful, and Andrew is portrayed as a bit of a buffoon. I'm assuming that the real Andrew is equally clueless as to his part in the Epstein case, and a chronic denier of any wrongdoing. A well-done film.

I enjoyed it too. Rufus Sewell was a pretty good PA. Apparently there’s another movie in production about the same interview.

Amazon's "A Very Royal Scandal" is about Prince Andrew apparently, not sure if it's solely about just this interview though. Also I'm not sure if it will be a movie or limited series, a la their "A Very British Scandal" series.

It is told from the interviewer’s point of view- similar focus but more background on the interviewer and perhaps PA since it is in three parts.

I watched "Scoop" this afternoon. Strong performances, script was okay but I felt like they missed out on the tension the tv crew was under not just to get the "scoop," but because of the spectre of getting let go due to BBC's financial woes. It was important enough to be part of the lead off in the movie, then that storyline was quickly abandoned.

We binge-watched Fallout last night. Mr Mac wasn't as enamored of it as I was. I got really invested in some of the characters.

However, I spent most of the evening complaining about how stupid some of the characters were. Okay, most of the characters. How did they survive an apocalypse being that dumb??

It was still fun. And gory. (I watched the graphic parts with my fingers over my eyes like I did for The Last of Us.)

There were a few plot points that made no sense to me but I'm hoping I can watch something that explains them.

As much as I loved Fallout there certainly is some real head scratch type moments. But then again I have never played the game.

Dune Part 2 is out on digital release today. I just watched it again. The spectacle of the "battle worms" isn't quite as, well, spectacular on a TV screen, but it's still pretty awesome. I love everything about this movie, and I haven't said that in a while.
