"Legacy on Ice" benefit show in D.C. (March 2, 2025) and ways to help those affected by the air tragedy over the Potomac River

So, it's okay to have a performance to a song like "Imagine" but not to have a Christian prayer?

Gotta love FSU for that double standard.
The prayer was perfect.
I cried through all that.

Scott’s prayer no doubt was well meaning but felt awkward.

I hate Imagine.
Scott did a wonderful job. Paul Wylie would have also given a good prayer if he had been given a chance.

That was lovely and I’m very grateful to the ISU for the stream.

I haven’t been this move by a skating show since the Sergei Grinkov memorial of 1996.

I wish only the best for those who have lost loved ones, as now that the show is over and everything quiets back down, they may feel the weight of the loss all over again.

That was a very nice show, and a lovely tribute.

I agree some of the hosting was a bit messy, but live TV isn’t easy. They may have been better off going with hosts with more recent broadcasting experience though. For all the annoyance of his commentary at times, Weir was probably the best at delivering the lines he had today.

A big thank you to the organizers of this event and all the skaters. Jimmy Ma was fantastic. I was not expecting to be so moved by Ilia Kulik's tribute to his student Olivia Eve Ter, it was wonderful. There are no words for Max -- I'm so impressed he held it together as well as he did. Sofia B & the group of young skaters that were coached by Inna Volyanskaya were great as well. I hope the show brought love and catharsis to the families of the victims.

It’s not about it being a religious prayer. It is about who it includes and excludes. I didn’t say it was illegal. I just said I didn’t think it was appropriate and I stand by that. Scott got it wrong.
but you are not objecting to Hallelujah or Ave Maria etc. Selective enforcement of your inclusion requirements , isn’t there?

Kudos to the organizers and the performers. Putting this show together in less than a month is an impressive accomplishment, especially since I'm sure many of the schedules weren't confirmed until late. The good intentions and sincere emotions of the cast were apparent, and I'm thankful they all donated their talent and time to the cause.

Well, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen isn't really a religious song, though I agree about Ave Maria.

My mom texted after the show was over to tell me how much she loved Ilia's "Hope" program because it conveys the anger and questions that come from such an unexpected, unnecessary loss of life. Hope does indeed spring from anger, and it really touched her that Ilia expressed that in his program.

I just had to say how stunning I thought Camden’s program was. “On the Nature of Daylight” is one of my favorite pieces of music ever (and it also always makes me cry which didn’t help today), and I’ve always wanted someone to do it justice on ice. I think this would be a wonderful competitive program for Camden.

Back home. Well, there was no intermission, so I couldn't go back to check out the merchandise (and the ladies rooms lines at the end of the show were :yikes:) but maybe USFS will put the items online in their store.

Beautiful skating by everyone, Franco's sister, Max and Sofia B were so brave. For the little amount of time they had to put it together, I was impressed. And I agree with those who thought Scott's prayer was inappropriate. I don't want to take this thread OT, but this is not the first time he has used his (USFS- provided) platform to do impose his faith on others (those who weren't at the FOFS breakfast at 2020 Nats can PM me if they want to know more) and as a big fan of his back in the day, I find it offensive and disappointing.

But anyway....a very moving show. I hope USFS continues to provide skaters with mental health resources and other support they may need.

I agree - it speaks to the tight-knit nature of the skating community that the majority of the World team took time to participate even though it's only 3 weeks to the competition. Sure, the tone wasn't perfect all the time, but given the amount of time everyone had to prepare, I can understand. It was also very encouraging to see the arena full.

I thought Scott went a bit long, but I had no problem with the content... just one agnostic's opinion.

And I didn't get the "hosts were too perky" vibe, I think they were a bit happy to see the place so FULL. There were people in the RAFTERS! Up where you probably need supplemental oxygen!

It was so packed. I was so glad to see it basically sold out.

It was also great to see @Debbie S and meet her mom! I'd told Mini he was going to meet some of my friends

The therapy dogs were so sweet. I'm glad they were there. One of the handlers told me they've been at the rinks often for comfort.

I didn't get there in time to walk around... my ride took forever, but I did manage to get to the merch table after the show. (Sorry pins are gone... hoping they put merch online too.)

We couldn't even FIND the merch table but we went looking afterward. I hope they do sell this stuff online. @terisa I'd love a pin if you have any left!

Hallelujah is really not very religious. And I am not objecting to having a religious prayer. To me, the tone of Scott’s prayer was off, it did not include everyone in the room. YMMV
That would have been difficult given so many faiths and those not of a religious faith. People who could accept Scott's prayer, did. People who didn't, likely didn't bow their head and were respectful. This is a country with freedom of speech and freedom of religion. We can respect everyone especially during a time of mourning during which people tend to turn toward their God, or some type of hope.
And the song that followed his prayer was Imagine by John Lennon, including imagine there is no heaven, hell or religion. I didn't get upset about that. It represented the beliefs of some people and the show was designed to represent as many people as possible.
You can reply with your thoughts, with no debate from me.

I'm going to cry through this whole thing, I can already tell. I teared up twice before the skating even started. :(
All I’m going to say is that I can’t remember the last time I cried all my makeup off. I didn’t think I would make it through Max’ skate and am glad he did. The ending was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve seen in person, from real life, in a very long time.

It was gut wrenching to watch him sobbing after his performance. I can't imagine seeing it in person. I was a mess through the whole show, but that moment just got me.
