Kaori Sakamoto had been seriously practicing 3A before this season began.

Let me begin with the comment by Yuhana Yokoi, a former Japanese figure skater and a CS bronze medalist, on this article:

In this era where more and more skaters are attempting harder jumps with more rotations, there's no such thing as you are not challenging yourself about those jumps. But precisely because it's so difficult, those who "have not" respect those who "have," and that makes you want to do your best and keep improving even more what you can do right now.

Kaori Sakamoto who became the first woman to secure her third Olympic spot, revealed she had been attempting the triple Axel just before the season began.
Sakamoto usually does not jump such as 3A, instead relying on scoring from triple jumps combinations in the 2nd half of her program and GOE. Even so, during the off-season before this season started, she practiced 3A, stating, “I did work on it.” (snip) “I got closer landing it than ever before, but it wasn't ready in time for the season.” She noted that she was able to land them but they were underrotated.

Her rink-mate, Saki Miyake who lands 3A, told that “Kaori's 3A takeoff has changed. She looked ready.”
Sakamoto had been practicing it right up until the season began, the Kinoshita Group Cup in September. “When Saki said I looked ready, I felt like I could do it... but I couldn't,” Kaori laughed.

IIRC, Paul Wylie once said that you need a special talent to perform super difficult jumps such as 3A and quads. Jason said in an article that he has still been practicing quads. As a huge Ilia Malinin fan, I am in no way denying the value of so-called "ultra-C" elements — I love them. However, I also think these elements are not meant for every skater, and we should find more ways to appreciate those who "don't have them" but excel in other areas.

Edited for clarity.
