“I have had some time to reflect this summer on my future and believe taking this year off to evaluate my next steps is important in making the best personal decision,” said Osmond. “I am excited to be travelling across the country performing for my fans on the Thank You Canada Tour this autumn and look forward to pursing other opportunities during my time away from competition.”

Not suprising. after achieving so much and with plenty of new opportunities coming in the lack of motivation is always an issue. I hope she does consider coming back one last time for Montreal 2020 Worlds. That would be a good end to a stellar career.

Unless Daleman and Chartrand can achieve the magic thirteen combined points or less in Saitama, there go Canada's three spots for Montreal.

I often wonder when a skater takes time off, whether they lose political momentum with international judges.

Not a surprise. That means TWO randoms for Canada for world's this year. Gabby goes with Chartrand and Austman possibly, but there are others who are possible. Right now, no one really seems interested in going for it based on summer skates, but you'd think CAN ladies would be licking their chops. Let's see who giddys up.

As for KO skating in Montreal I think there are so many factors. Her personal interest in skating competitively again would be at the top. Off-ice opportunities would be next, I'd think. And then thirdly you look at her potential to score under the updated IJS system, relative to the competition.

If judges continue to award 9s to juniorish skaters with no SS and under developed PE/CH/IN...AND...continue to give highest GoE as a gift to clean skaters whose elements are clean but only of average quality, I'd say don't bother.

Then there's her bf, with whom she's spending a LOT of time....so there's that.

This is all heading in the direction of retirement, if you ask me. We'll see.

It's smart to take advantage of opportunities that might kick off a longer term career than figure skating, so I would put non-competitive ice, then off-ice, then personal interest in competitions. But as you said, we'll see what happens. I will miss seeing her this year!

Oh how I will miss her skating!

I do not think it is lack of motivation, but rather strike while the iron is hot...and good for her for enjoying the fruits of her labor.

IMHO - we won't see her competing again. While she is sitting out the season, the sport is blazing forward. Not that she couldn't, but why would she?

Maybe she would do it for me :cheer2::summer::encore:

I'm not entirely surprised but I will miss her. Canada will lose its third spot but we will survive. We should be able to retain two spots. I always thought she might take the Buttle route. Or she could do what Patrick and V/M did and come back after a break.

As for the Russians, let's see how they do in the senior ranks first before crowning them.

As disappointed as I am, I'm not surprised. This was a magical season for her, where everything aligned perfectly. All things being equal, she'll never see the same kind of results again. I personally see her going the Buttle route, where after he won Worlds, he said he'd accomplished everything he'd wished for and more in the sport.

I agree. This appears to be a stepping stone to retirement. She’s strikes me as someone who really wants more of a normal life. Family time, boyfriend...I think the pull to have that is stronger knowing she’s already accomplished so much. Hard to give that up again. I love Kaetlyn and I am so hopeful that the break will reignite her desire to compete but I would be very surprised to see her back on the circuit in the future.

And that's the smart thing to do. There's no guarantee of that in four years, an athlete will still be at their peak. Look at Ashley Wagner. Sometimes, achieving a goal can harm your motivation.

Selfishly I hope she comes back to competitive skating. I think she's barely scratched the surface of what she's capable of doing, certainly artistically, and likely technically. But she owes no one anything and ultimately I really just hope she's happy and leaves the sport at peace with her decision. Whenever that may be.

Not accepting the chance to get into competing under the new scoring system is a sign of possible retirement, but it will depend on the offers. If she is not satisfied with the offers, she may decide to return. Sounds to me as if she will try to make a life out of this past season's accomplishments, but I anticipate that it won't pan out fully financially and she will return - without the benefit of being in the new system from the get-go.

She is a winner (at Worlds) but to be a 'champion' who will be remembered as a champion later in history, one must continue to compete and win. Kind of like Hanyu.

Agree, although that might not be a goal of hers.

She almost retired after so many injuries, especially the ankle break. She likely no longer saw herself on a world or Olympic podium, coming back to competition with almost no goals other than to be able to skate and compete and leave the sport on her terms.

The results in her last two years must seem like winning the lottery, leaving her beyond humbled and satisfied, rather than hungry for more.

A true Champion mindset would be to be hungry for more. If she does feel like she won the lottery, then she never felt herself to be a winner and feels lucky to have won. Again, not the mindset of a memorable champion.

There are certainly a lot of similarities with Buttle. World silver, Olympic bronze, World gold. Kaetlyn of course also has the Olympic team silver and gold. Not a lot left to keep her motivated. I wish her the best what ever she ends up doing. She has given us some lovely programs and memorable moments.

Who died and made you the arbiter of who is and isn't a memorable champion?

Osmond is the first women's world champion from Canada in 45 years. That's pretty memorable. And she won by working with a coach who wasn't all that well known, rather than going to one of the famous coaches who had produced previous world/Olympic champions. That's also memorable.

ETA: and as @coppertop1 points out, she broke her freakin' leg and wasn't sure she would ever be able to skate again. As in, not being able to skate at all. To go from that to being world champion is extremely memorable.

And she came back from a devastating injury and a rough comeback year. Also memorable. She triumphed over adversity and persevered to earn her medals. That is the mark of a champion.

Says who? She's the most successful Canadian women's skater since at least Karen Magnussen, and (realistically) will probably hold that distinction for a while yet. I'm quite confident in saying that people will remember her.

Also:

This is blatantly not true. It's extremely common for people to retire after winning major championships or other big medals.

At best, she may choose to train for Montreal Worlds in 2020, however, she's already competed at a home country Worlds (London, 2013), so even that won't be a novelty.

I think Osmond has a good brain. She won enough top medals, now it's time for next segment in life, with different accomplishments. This is strictly personal opinion, but i think that "waving your butt around and flashing "crotch" in skimpy outfits in people's faces after age of 20+" should not be a life's career, really.... :D

What a ridiculous comment.
