My handle on here- firstflight- is in reference to how I love watching the first flight of competitions for the discipline of ice dance. And in the larger events like Europeans or Worlds, that would be the first two or even three flights. It's because when you're watching teams not contending for a medal, there's a genuine joy they exude when they skate well. In the top teams, it's often more relief than joy after a well-skated program. I love the spontaneous overflow of emotion when teams achieve their personal victories, not measured against medal contenders.
One of my favorite examples of all time of that joyful triumph is Agafonova/Ucar in the FD at 2017 European Championships. I can watch this performance every day:
