A few times a year when the sciatica kicks up I go and get a massage from Nina. I saw her last week. Her mom is a military doctor in Russia, a colonel. Nina wants to see her but is afraid to go back to Russia to visit for fear of being labelled “traitor” and not be allowed to leave. (She’s an American citizen.) They’re trying to meet in Thailand.

I haven’t asked her outright what she thinks of the war but tells me her mom is treating a lot of Ukrainian refugees with TB. I’m thinking, willing refugees? Deportees? I don’t know.

Is fear, or perhaps lack of access to information, the primary reason for Russians not opposing the war?

Well, let's consider the millions of Russians living safely in the European Union, with access to a wide variety of news sources.
A few members of the Russian diaspora have condemned the war, but the vast majority have not. Are we supposed to believe they all have close family members trapped in Russia?

The Iranian diaspora has organized large demonstrations to show their opposition to the Iranian regime. Why hasn't the Russian diaspora done anything similar?

Have they at least rallied on the internet to condemn the war? Or do they prefer whataboutism to distract/deflect from Russia's actions?
There was a protest in DC by the Russian diaspora on the anniversary of the invasion.

Just a couple of days ago, a documentary about Russian oppositional leader won the Oscar. You can watch it and educate yourself. You'll learn for how long Russians have been protesting (the massive rallies have been happening in the country since 2011), how they do that and what happens with those who do that. They're still doing that in various ways. That's a very interesting watch and you get answers to your questions.
There are far larger protests in Tel Aviv than Moscow these days. The entire State of Israel has only about thre quarters as many people as Moscow.

Nice try.

Was this meant to be posted here??

Which is a meaningless date in this context, since the war started in 2022.
Sure. Nothing happened in 2008, and nothing happened in 2014 either. I don't expect any empathy, because it's not the right time or place. My post was an answer to a concrete question, in case the author is really interested in knowing the answer and not just channeling their anger at random forum readers.

The difference is that in Tel Aviv when protesting we are 100% sure we will not be arrested for it as long as we are not disturbing the traffic (and even then...). Trust me, if an actual time in prison was a possibility most of us wouldn't be there.

Max Nikitin created a video about russia figure skating

Max Nikitin created a video about russia figure skating

thank-you for posting this...I was not sure how to do it. It answers a lot of our questions and is timed beautifully for day 1 of world championships.I cannot stand all the comments that come out at how sad it is the Russians are not competing and how we are missing out on their skating at each international competition. Slava Ukraine. Max is my hero...on the ice and off.

You don't understand. We are doing them a favor. Their dictator is using them as propaganda and we are depriving their dictator of that opportunity, so they don't have to speak on the subject when questioned by the rest of the world's media. We are protecting them, really.
False. You are robbing them of an opportunity to get out

And Ukrainian athletes are dying.

You want to talk about being robbed? How many clean athletes have been robbed by Russia doping? How about the fact that USA and Japan still do have their medals and Canada is left in the lurch?
This is why “Russia” is banned and you must test all the Russians more than others
