While it appears that the truck may have gone through a stop sign, headed west on a secondary road, and collided with the bus headed north on the main road, and at speed (based on the amount of damage), there may have been external circumstances of a weather or mechanical nature. It is all being thoroughly investigated - the road was only reopened to traffic yesterday.
Although the driver of the bus was one of those killed (the front end of the bus was essentially ripped off), the driver of the truck was not injured. He was briefly detained but released and was offered counseling.
If the driver of the truck is at all responsible, he going to have to live with those deaths for the rest of his life.
A friend of mine's sister was killed by man who was driving while talking on his cell phone. She was 52 years old, and riding home on her scooter after working a night shift as a nurse. She had a wonderful family, a wonderful home, and a wonderful life - all taken away from her because a driver was more focused on his phone than on the road.
I am glad that fines for texting/focusing on one's phone while driving are really steep here.
And am reminded of all the foolish drivers in the world. We used to go to a pub with our neighbor, and we would drive home with him after he'd had a few too many beer. I guess we figured it was cheaper than a cab, and neither Mr.Japanfan or myself would ever drive under the influence.
Having a few drinks impedes judgment - that split second of judgment needed to respond quickly to something like a person in a wheelchair in dark clothes crossing an intersection on a dark, rainy night. It doesn't happen very often that one needs to employ that split second of judgment, but when one must do so,it can be a matter of life and death.
